"This... Eighth Young Master, this is my family’s affair. If you recklessly intervene, it might not be appropriate, don’t you think?"
Xie Zian braced himself to speak to Ji Youze.
Ji Youze remained silent, his face expressionless as he stared at him.
He neither spoke nor moved.
Xie Zian felt his confidence waver under that stare. He turned towards his wife and shouted, "Foolish woman, what have you done?"
Lady Xie looked at Xie Zian in surprise, inwardly cursing this useless man. She had thought calling him back would provide some backing, enough to drive these people away. She hadn’t expected him to be such a coward.
"My lord... what could I have done? I am in my own home, disciplining my own servants. What’s wrong with that?"
Lady Xie commented with a cold snort.
"Exactly! My mother and I are disciplining our servants in our own home. What business is it of theirs? Do they think that just because they have the backing of the Princess and His Majesty, they can extend their reach so far as to meddle in the private affairs of another family’s household?"
Xie Yingying also began to argue.
"Disciplining servants? Who are these ’servants’ you speak of? Is it your kinswoman, Third Miss Xie Pan’Er? Or this respected elder, who should hold the status of an aunt within your family? Are *they* considered servants in your Xie Family?" Ji Youze’s face was expressionless, his words cold and hard as he pointed to Xie Pan’Er and Madam Luo, questioning Xie Zian.
"Junior Minister, the rules and etiquette of your household have truly been an eye-opener for His Majesty and myself!"
Xie Zian was so frightened, cold sweat beaded on his forehead. Heavens! Even His Majesty knows about the discord in my household. My career prospects... they’re likely finished now.
"This... Eighth... Eighth Young Master... your words... are... are too severe..."
"Whether my words are severe or not, surely you, Junior Minister, understand better than I do!"
"This..." Xie Zian weighed his options, then turned and called out to Xie Yingying, "Yingying, apologize to your Fifth Aunt Luo!"
"Father! Why should I apologize? She’s just a wretched servant! I am the noble First Miss of the Xie Family!"
Upon hearing Xie Zian’s demand, Xie Yingying became completely hysterical.
"Silence, you rebellious girl! Starting today, you will apologize to your Fifth Aunt Luo! Didn’t you hear me?"
Xie Zian was about to explode with anger. What a rebellious daughter! Can’t she see the predicament our family is in?
Normally, it wouldn’t matter much if she and her mother lorded it over those lesser-born sons and daughters at home. But they had courted disaster by offending someone close to His Majesty! Now, His Majesty had sent his favored aide and two ladies from the Ji Family to handle their household affairs. What on earth did this signify?
Xie Zian suppressed the fury welling up inside him, just wanting his daughter to apologize quickly and get this over with. However, he hadn’t anticipated that before Yingying could even offer an apology, his own wife would jump in.
"My lord, don’t listen to their nonsense here! ’Fifth Aunt Luo’ indeed! You think too highly of her! She’s nothing more than my night-soil maidservant! Why shouldn’t my daughter be able to hit or scold her?"
When Lady Xie said this, Zhu Xiuxiu and Huo Xing’Er were stunned.
They had been wondering. If His Majesty wanted to punish this mother and daughter from the Xie Family, a single charge of disrespect—colliding with a superior—would have sufficed for a beating or a few days in jail. Why then had he vaguely assigned them the task of managing another family’s household affairs? So, *this* was the root of the matter!
「...」
「On the way back to the Ji Family residence.」
The young Emperor held Suisui in his arms. Xiaosuisui had already yawned several times and was beginning to doze off on the young Emperor’s shoulder.
Ji Youzhi was by the young Emperor’s side, ensuring his safety.
"Your Majesty! Earlier, you asked Youze and my two sisters-in-law to handle the internal affairs of the Xie Family. May I ask, what was your profound reasoning behind this?"
Ji Youzhi had also gone with them earlier. The young Emperor had only summoned Ji Youze into the Xie Family’s inner courtyard, not him, so Ji Youzhi had remained outside. After the young Emperor emerged carrying his precious niece, Ji Youzhi naturally accompanied them back to the Ji Family residence.
Upon hearing this, the young Emperor glanced at him and said with a smile, "You believe all my actions carry profound meaning. In that case, why don’t you try to guess my purpose?"
