However, just as County Magistrate Wu opened his mouth to speak, Ji Youzhi’s icy stare made the words inexplicably die on his lips.
Nearby, Zhao Chunxiang, who had been carried in on a stretcher by Ji Youzhi’s men, her throat worked, and low, guttural sounds escaped her as her body trembled incessantly.
Kneeling beside her, Li Yanyan asked anxiously, "Mother! What’s wrong? Mother, what are you trying to say? Mother! Please say something!"
Ji Youzhi observed Zhao Chunxiang’s state, a faint smirk playing on his lips. Pointing at her, he announced to everyone, "Look, everyone. The woman at the center of this is so agitated. It seems she has something she wants to express, doesn’t she?"
"She... what does she want to say?" County Magistrate Wu stammered, terrified. He genuinely wanted Zhao Chunxiang to recount her ordeal. Yet, the thought of the Emperor himself helping the Princess dig the pit sent a chill down his spine, and cold sweat beaded on his back.
At this moment, he desperately wished he could slap himself a few times. If he’d known that rescuing the woman from the pit would lead to such a mess, he would never have approached the National Master! The Princess buries someone, the Emperor helps dig the pit... killing a village woman is no different than killing an ant, is it?
Ji Youzhi slanted a look at County Magistrate Wu. "What does she want to say? County Magistrate, why don’t you go over and have a listen?"
County Magistrate Wu’s legs trembled with fear. "No... no need to listen. The ravings... of a madwoman, what’s there to hear?"
Indeed, ever since Zhao Chunxiang had been rescued and regained consciousness, she had lost her mind. No matter what anyone asked or said, she would only babble incoherently, her body wracked with tremors. When agitated, she would even try to jump off the bed and crawl away.
County Magistrate Wu slammed his gavel again and sternly questioned Li San, who was kneeling in the Hall. "Audacious Li San! The Lord God Hunter has already laid out the situation. What crime did you commit? Confess truthfully at once!"
Li San’s body shuddered. He gritted his teeth and said, "County Magistrate, please be clear. What exactly do you want me to confess? Tell me. As long as you say it, I’ll admit to it. Even if I didn’t do it, I’ll take the blame."
So, this fellow was implying that County Magistrate Wu wanted him to be the scapegoat.
"Audacious Li San! What nonsense are you spouting?" County Magistrate Wu retorted. "When did I ever say you should plead guilty? I..." As he spoke, County Magistrate Wu realized something was wrong; he seemed to have been drawn in by Li San’s words.
Ji Youzhi cut in, "Li San, let me ask you. Where were you and what were you doing at the end of the noon hour today?"
Upon hearing Ji Youzhi’s question, Li San went limp and nearly fainted. Ji Youzhi stepped forward and kicked him. "If you dare faint, I’ll gouge out your eyeballs and feed them to the dogs! Believe me?"
Terrified, Li San’s eyes flew open to stare at Ji Youzhi. His expression was one of utter horror, as if he were looking at a demon. "I... At the end of the noon hour... I was near the toilet in the Government Office’s backyard."
"What were you doing there?"
"I... I was there... I... I saw the Princess... bu-burying alive this clueless village woman!" Li San declared, pointing resentfully at Zhao Chunxiang.
"And then?"
"And then... after the Princess buried her and left with the Emperor, I also left. I went to patrol Shunyi Street. Lord God Hunter, when you found me, I was on Shunyi Street!"
Ji Youzhi nodded. "So, where did the bloodstains on your clothes come from? To my knowledge, there’s no wet market on Shunyi Street, and certainly no pork butchers. In fact, it’s not just Shunyi Street. Because His Majesty is making an unscheduled stop in our Xun’an County, County Magistrate Wu ordered all bustling markets and wet markets in the surrounding area closed early this morning!"
