"Xie Pan’Er, if you abducted the Princess, just admit it. Why go to such lengths to spout such nonsense? Did you not hear the Emperor say just now that ’the ignorant are not guilty’? Even if you admit you abducted the Princess, the Emperor would not punish you."
Upon hearing Xie Pan’Er reveal many details unfavorable to her, Xie Yingying flew into a rage. Dammit, this Xie Pan’Er is truly a jinx! What was she thinking, bringing the Princess back? She’s caused no end of trouble!
"What do you mean, ’the Emperor would not punish’? Presuming to interpret the imperial will? What are your intentions?" Zhu Xiuxiu shouted sharply, scaring Xie Yingying so badly that she collapsed to the ground, trembling.
"I wouldn’t dare, Madam! Please, calm your anger, Madam, calm your anger!"
"There’s nothing you wouldn’t dare! As a young lady, with your mother, the matron of this household, still present and yet to speak, you, a sheltered maiden, have jumped in to speak out of turn." Once Zhu Xiuxiu said this, Lady Xie’s face instantly burned with shame.
When the Emperor had arrived earlier, their entire family knelt on the ground to welcome him. The Emperor did not bid them rise. Later, when the Ji Family arrived, the Emperor had them handle the situation here. Consequently, the Xie family had remained kneeling on the ground the entire time. The Xie Family had already been cursing the Ji Family relentlessly in their hearts, and upon hearing Zhu Xiuxiu’s words, they felt even more humiliated.
"Madam, are you insinuating that I don’t know how to raise my own daughter? And who might you be, to stand here pointing fingers at us, acting like some magistrate investigating a case!" Lady Xie glared up at Zhu Xiuxiu, her eyes blazing with fury, then, disregarding everything, she scrambled to her feet.
After she got up, the rest of the Xie Family followed her example and also rose to their feet.
Zhu Xiuxiu said nothing, merely giving a cold snort before turning to Xie Pan’Er. "Continue."
This behavior undoubtedly offended Lady Xie to the core. Not only did Zhu Xiuxiu show her no respect, but there was also a clear hint of contempt in her demeanor.
Xie Pan’Er hesitated. Should she speak about the events involving Zhao Fei and his sibling(s), or not?
"My third sister-in-law told you to continue. Why have you stopped? Are you facing some difficulty? Or is there something you’re deliberately trying to hide?" Seeing Xie Pan’Er remain silent for a long moment, a dangerous glint flashed in Ji Youze’s eyes.
Xie Pan’Er flinched in fear. She was, after all, only a thirteen or fourteen-year-old girl, easily frightened. She hastily resumed her account, words tumbling out.
"At the City God Temple, we encountered a small mishap. After we dealt with it together, we started for home. I told the Princess that if I carried her on my back, we could travel faster; otherwise, if I was out too long and got back late, my clan sister would scold and beat me.
Without a word, the Princess took me and flew. We landed on the roof of my house, just in time to see my clan sister beating my mother.
In my alarm, the Princess and I flew down from the roof, and that’s how the conflict started with my clan sister and the others."
As Xie Pan’Er recounted this, Huo Xing’Er, Zhu Xiuxiu, and Ji Youze all frowned.
"What is your relationship with Xie Yingying?" Ji Youze asked.
Xie Pan’Er replied, "We are clan sisters. Xie Yingying is the eldest, and I am the third."
"Clan sisters? Then your father and Xie Shaoying are clan brothers? If you are indeed the daughters of clan brothers, why then did I hear the Eldest Miss Xie refer to you as her girl earlier?"
At Ji Youze’s question, Xie Pan’Er’s face turned deathly pale. The woman of the Luo family beside her visibly trembled, her lips pressing into a thin line as she lowered her head and nervously twisted the handkerchief in her hands.
