Charles stood at the workshop entrance, waving enthusiastically as Finn walked away. He had shared everything he knew about the fifty-ninth floor with Finn, including information on the split body of the Fallen Spirit. Of course, Charles also got what he wanted in return. It was said that the Loki Familia possessed the largest library in all of Orario, and it contained a wealth of material on divine script. Finn was more than happy to accept Charles' terms for borrowing that knowledge—so long as Charles didn't ask for any valis, they could work something out. After being extorted multiple times by Hephaestus and while still needing to fund their next expedition, the Loki Familia had been squeezed dry. Rumor had it Loki was still wracking her brain over how to repay the debt from their previous expedition. As for the culprit behind that situation—Bete was practically collapsing from exhaustion each day as he worked tirelessly in the Dungeon to pay it off. Every executive under Finn in the Loki Familia was essentially eating dirt. All Charles asked for was to borrow a few books. Finn had no reason to refuse—especially since it was just regular material, not some precious grimoire that would self-destruct after one reading. With Finn sent off, Charles could finally begin researching the Mystery development ability he had just acquired. Only now did Charles truly understand what Hephaestus meant when she said the divine script written by the gods and by Mystery holders was different from anything others could inscribe. As Charles looked at the divine script carved into the metal plate before him, he could clearly sense that they were more than just symbols—there was an energy flowing through the characters. As for what granted these words that power, Charles hadn't the faintest idea for now. But after some trials, Charles managed to understand the effects of Mystery. According to the materials, Mystery allowed adventurers to trigger eighteen different divine miracles—including resurrection of the dead—making it an unquestionably divine ability. Of course, with his Mystery still at rank I, there was no way Charles could perform divine miracles just yet. As far as he knew, only the Sage Fels had ever truly accomplished such feats—creating the Philosopher's Stone, which granted immortality. For Charles right now, the most pressing goal was to level up his Mystery. Even if he couldn't reach resurrection yet, he wanted at least the ability to preserve souls. Generally, low-rank Mystery had to be combined with other skills to be effective. Fels combined Mystery with Magecraft to create the Philosopher's Stone and magical tomes. Asfi, the "Perfecter" of Hermes Familia, combined Mystery with Alchemy and Smithing to create items like high-explosive bombs, winged boots, and the Helm of Hades. As for Charles, his application of Mystery was naturally in blacksmithing. Divine miracles infused into forging—when thinking along those lines, the first thing that came to mind was mythological artifacts. So his next step was clear: use his ability to replicate divine weapons. "Farle, I'll be relying on you again!" Farle emerged from Charles' grimoire and nestled into its usual spot in the workshop, letting out a cheerful chirp. Charles selected an appropriate forging hammer and materials and began his divine artifact replication project. The rhythmic clanging of hammer against metal rang out through the workshop. Days passed in a flash. Charles now had the results of his efforts laid out on the table. A spear with a slightly curved shaft, and a short-handled warhammer. Through hands-on work, Charles came to understand the limitations of his abilities. His initial plan was to imbue equipment with divine script to grant them unique powers, but once he tried, he realized the truth—he was nowhere near capable of inscribing the more exaggerated divine glyphs. Moreover, each piece of equipment had a limit to how much divine script it could bear. That limit varied depending on the materials used and Charles' own forging skill. After several failures, Charles had managed to complete two items, though heavily downgraded versions of their original inspirations: A replica of Gungnir, and one of Mjölnir. Gungnir, also known as the Spear of Heaven, was the weapon of Odin, the All-Father of Norse myth. It was said to be crafted from the branches of the World Tree, with runes inscribed upon its head. Its abilities included never missing its target once thrown, always piercing its mark—an overwhelming weapon of causal certainty. It also had the power to make any oath sworn upon it unbreakable, which inspired the later tradition of wishing upon falling stars. Mjölnir, the Hammer of Thunder, was the weapon of Thor. It was said to be able to crush mountains and would always return to the hand of its wielder. Naturally, the replicas Charles forged didn't come close to those legends. Both weapons were forged from Orichalcum—a rare metal also known as Adamantite—and were first-tier equipment possessing unbreakable properties. Perhaps because Charles' Mystery rank was too low, he could only inscribe one ability onto each weapon. The Gungnir replica, dubbed "Spear of Certain Hit," had the ability to home in on and strike its target without fail. Charles didn't have the power to inscribe a divine script equivalent to "certain hit," so he used a glyph for "tracking" instead. It was a clever workaround that caused the spear to pursue the enemy relentlessly until it struck. Originally, Charles had intended to add "pierce" and "return" abilities too, but those were currently out of reach. The Mjölnir replica also lacked the real deal's overwhelming destructive power or revival abilities. It could only return to the wielder after being thrown. So Charles named it "Hammer of Return." Calling this replication a success felt a bit hollow—it didn't fully meet expectations. But calling it a failure wasn't right either. He had achieved tangible results, after all. For now, Charles wasn't sure whether to feel disappointed or proud. Just then, a voice rang out from outside his door. "Charles, I came to—ow!" Charles snickered. In addition to forging the artifacts, he had used some of his Orichalcum stockpile to upgrade his front door. An indestructible door—just to deal with that person. Charles opened the door to find Tsubaki clutching her toe in pain. She looked up and grumbled, "When did you make a door out of Orichalcum? That's such a waste!" Charles rolled his eyes. "It wouldn't be a waste if someone could learn to knock." Tsubaki snorted indignantly but still followed him inside. "I heard you holed up in your workshop right after leveling up. Did you get a fun new ability or something?" Then she caught sight of the Spear of Certain Hit and the Hammer of Return laid out on the table. "These are your new creations? They look pretty impressive." Charles frowned. "It's a shame they didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped." Tsubaki picked up the spear and gave it a few testing swings. "You won't know how good a weapon really is until you try it out in the field. What say we take them into the Dungeon and run a few tests?" Charles glanced at her. He'd nearly forgotten this was the same woman who had leveled up to LV5 purely through weapon testing. A suggestion like this was par for the course with her. And honestly… Charles was tempted.
