Although Kurogane Ikki hadn't joined the battle, he remained highly alert, especially toward the two members of Akatsuki Academy who had yet to act. One of them was Kurogane Ouma—Ikki's own older brother. Of course, Ikki knew his elder brother well. Ouma wanted a one-on-one duel with Charles. That was why he hadn't stepped into the chaos of the melee. Ikki understood his brother's single-minded pursuit of strength and believed he would never resort to sneak attacks. But the one he remained most wary of was Shinoomiya Amane. That boy, with both a dangerous ability and an even more dangerous mind, had Ikki on edge. Shinoomiya Amane noticed Ikki's wariness and grinned. "Don't look at me like that, Senpai. I won't be doing anything else." Using ki to read people's truthfulness was normally effective, but Amane's ki was nothing but a chaotic swirl of malice—completely unreadable. Yet Ikki still caught the flaw in his words. "Else…? You've already done something, haven't you?" he asked coldly, tightening his grip on Intetsu. "Who knows?" Amane replied with an unreadable smile. Indeed, Amane had already taken action—though no one had noticed, and it had no effect. The truth of Shinoomiya Amane's ability was not, as Ikki had suspected, foresight. It was something else entirely—"Excessive Blessing of the Goddess." The name sounded impressive, but the ability itself was simple: he could elevate one of his own stats to a broken level. In Amane's case, that stat was Luck, rated S. According to the International Mage-Knight League, A was the highest ranking possible for a stat. Even someone like Stella, with magic output dozens of times beyond an average Blazer, was still classified as A. But an S-rank meant Amane's luck had transcended the known boundaries of the system. With this S-rank luck, as long as Amane made a wish, fate itself would find a way to grant it—just as though he were the darling of the goddess of destiny. If Amane wished for a slot in the Seven Stars Sword Art Festival, then misfortune would strike down all those who stood in his way—injuries, malfunctions in magic, accidents. Fate would bend to clear his path. It was exactly this anomaly that had drawn Kusakabe Kagami to begin investigating Akatsuki Academy. Amane had already made his wish—for Charles to lose. Normally, fate would intervene: a slip, a misfire of magic, or some other mishap would befall him, and the other members of Akatsuki would then finish the job. But this time, fate couldn't move Charles. He held onto the thread of victory too tightly for destiny to cut it. Just as Charles had said—everything up to this point had been about gathering intel on Akatsuki Academy. Now that he had a full picture, it was time to finish it. First up was Todoroki Yui. Charles dropped into a runner's stance, then shot toward her like a stream of light. "Four Symbols Fist, Vermilion Bird – Heavenly Drive!" Yui's dynamic vision was incredible—she actually saw Charles moving. But that didn't mean her body could react in time. So when Charles's fist approached, she couldn't block. She didn't have to—her ability would reflect the attack. Charles struck. To everyone's shock, Todoroki Yui was sent flying, her body folding in midair before she crashed heavily to the ground. From the way she lay there, she wouldn't be getting back up. "Incredible!" Kurogane Ouma couldn't help but praise him. He understood how Charles had managed it. Charles's initial strike had been reflected—but he had layered on even greater force the moment it rebounded, overwhelming the reflection and landing a direct hit. "One down." Charles turned his head, then began walking toward Tsuruhashi Mikoto. "Y-You… don't come any closer!" Despite having reached the quarterfinals of last year's Seven Stars Sword Art Festival, Mikoto was surprisingly lacking in confidence. That was why she had allied with suspicious figures like Hiraga Reisui in the first place. Now she could clearly feel the danger closing in—and panic welled up. But Charles only quickened his pace. She activated her ability. Her Device—a monocle—allowed her to focus on a target and reduce the surrounding area to absolute zero in an instant. No living body could survive such cold. At those temperatures, even bone marrow would freeze, and the heart would stop. That was her Noble Art: "Death God's Evil Eye." Because it was activated via sight, its firing speed, range, and power were all top-tier. But unfortunately for her, her opponent was Charles—already in his Dragonblood Mode. Massive plumes of steam erupted from his body—the overwhelming heat canceling even absolute zero. Each of his footsteps sounded like a death knell to Mikoto. Her monocle glowed furiously, continuously casting her Noble Art—but it did nothing. Charles reached her. A swift hand strike landed on her neck. Her eyes rolled back, and she collapsed. "Two down." Charles turned to Sara next. She had been painting on her canvas—which was also her Device—without pause. Even as he dealt with Mikoto, she hadn't stopped crafting her artwork. But she wasn't merely creating for art's sake. "I've read the public info," Charles said. "They say Sara Labudlili's ability is a concept interference type that manipulates color—'Color Magic.' But that's not your real ability, is it?" Sara glanced up, briefly. "That's right. My real ability… I'll show you now." "Phantom Satirical Portrait!" As her brush swept the canvas, multiple kimono-clad figures appeared before Charles. Sara's true ability let her turn images into reality—just like the earlier Sphinx she had drawn. The illusions could use the same abilities and Noble Arts as their real counterparts. This time, she had drawn one of the most powerful Blazers she knew: Kurogane Ouma. She summoned six of him, each wielding the same fearsome power as the real one. "Crescent Moon Sky Dragon Claw!" ×6 Six projected Oumas unleashed their Noble Art simultaneously, crossing the battlefield with razor winds. This was the terrifying might of the original Ouma—and Sara had perfectly replicated it. "Boring." Charles had no interest in wasting time on soulless illusions. Abilities like Sara's were no different from puppet masters. Beat the user, and the illusions fall. "Four Symbols Fist, Azure Dragon – Flowing Water!" Like the Heavenly Drive, this was a footwork technique. But unlike the charging Vermilion Bird, Azure Dragon was designed for evasion. Charles moved at a walking pace—nothing flashy—but he slipped through the overlapping attacks as though flowing water, untouchable. The footwork resembled an illusion, impossible to track. No matter how the enemy tried, he moved through like water between fingers. It was a technique only achievable through mastering the extremes of skill. Water always finds a path. So too did Azure Dragon's form. "Paintings with no soul are useless in battles like ours," Charles said, before driving a sharp punch into Sara's gut. Her body was far more fragile than expected. With just one blow, she dropped. On her easel, a half-finished figure could be seen—mostly blank, except for vast swaths of stark white. Charles let out a slow breath. Good thing he hadn't hesitated.
