Chapter 90: "I Should’ve Known!" Seraphina’s POV Without realizing it, I drifted off to sleep. Maybe I was exhausted... mentally, emotionally and physically. Everything had been so hard lately, I didn’t even realize how tired I was until I sat down here. My body just gave up—right there on the porch, under the dim light and light rain. I didn’t know how long I’d been asleep. But the sharp sound of a car horn jolted me awake. My eyes flew open to see the headlights of a large black car pull up right in front of the porch. The engine cut off, and the door swung open with a click. A tall figure stepped out, dressed in a deep maroon business suit that looked like it had seen a long and demanding day. He looked tense but his movements were quick. Lucien, he was finally here. But I... I couldn’t bring myself to move. My body felt heavy. My head was spinning a little, and the cold had seeped deep into my bones. Even lifting my arms felt so hard. My fingers were numb from holding onto the towel wrapped around me. Just great, I cursed silently. I’m meeting him again... in such a pitiful condition. Why did I always end up looking so pitiful in front of him? I clenched my teeth, forcing my head up slowly. My vision blured for a second before it focused on him. Lucien saw me and started walking toward the porch in quickened steps now, his face hard to read but he looked clearly worried. He was coming straight at me. And all I could do was sit there, frozen, with my heart racing and my head full of emotions. Lucien’s POV The moment my car pulled up to the mansion, I knew something was off. The porch light was on and that wasn’t normal since I had already told the maid to leave the house alone and leave. I honked once out of habit and stepped out of the car, as I cracked my neck out of exhaustion. And then my eyes fell on her. Sera was here to see him!! I was stunned and equally surprised at the sight in front of my eyes. She was curled up with a towel around her shoulders, her hair was damp, skin was pale, like she had been there for hours. My steps faltered for a second. I blinked, once, twice and looked once again to confirm that my eyes weren’t playing tricks on me. But no. It was her. And she looked... like hell, again! I quickened my pace immediately as she slowly lifted her head, eyes dazed, lips slightly parted like she’d just woken up. She didn’t even stand or move at all. "Seraphina..." I said her name slowly and almost breathlessly. What the fuck was she doing out here in the cold? Did she wait for me this entire time? Was she trying to kill herself slowly or what? My jaw clenched. A thousand emotions surged through me from anger, to guilt, and even dangerously close to panic. She looked so damn fragile even the light wind could knock her down. "Why are you here?" I asked in a harsh and cold tone, but I didn’t mean it that way. But the truth was, I didn’t want to be soft to her and if I did... If I reached out to her, I wasn’t sure if I’d pull her into my arms or scold her until the point that she’d started crying. At last, I just inhaled deeply and without waiting for her permission, I bent down and scooped her into my arms. She was way too light. Her skin felt warm, and she flinched slightly at the touch, but I didn’t stop. I punched in the passcode at the door, and the lock clicked open with a quiet beep. The mansion lights flicked on automatically as I stepped inside, holding her close against me. She was burning up. Her forehead was hot against my shoulder, and I could feel her body trembling slightly. Damn it. What the hell had she been thinking? I walked straight to the living room and gently lowered her onto the couch, trying not to make it obvious how fast my heart was racing. I adjusted the towel around her shoulders, then stepped back a little. "Why are you here?" I asked again, but this time, my voice was lower and softer. "You should’ve called me if you were coming over." The moment those words left my mouth, she moved. Without saying a word, she grabbed the towel wrapped around her and pushed it off her shoulder, giving me a sharp glare despite she just looked at damp and abandoned puppy. She reached into her bag, took out her phone, and held it up. I leaned forward in confusion until my eyes fell on the screen. It was her call history. She had called me over twenty times. And every call had gone unanswered. My heart dropped. Right. I’d smashed my phone out of frustration earlier. Shit. This... was on me. But still... She should’ve waited with the guard. At least there, she would’nt have been cold and gotten sick. "I’m sorry," I muttered, my voice low but filled with guilt. I lowered my head slightly, avoiding her eyes for a second. "But... you should’ve stayed with the guard over there." There was a long pause. She didn’t speak right away. I looked up again, just as she turned her face slightly. "I... I didn’t want to be alone with someone I barely knew." She whispered. Of course. I should’ve known. She didn’t talk much about her past, but I had seen the signs. The way she flinched when someone moved too quickly. The way her eyes stayed alert in new places. The way she smiled politely but never fully relaxed around people she didn’t trust and knew. And now... she’d chosen to wait in the rain. Just to see me. My hands curled into fists.
