Chapter 198: Flying Among the Clouds

Wade's words left Lupin in silence. Sirius had been in immense pain recently. Unlike the sorrow of losing a close friend, this was a different kind of torment—finally getting to know his brother, truly, years after his death. Seeing his friend's expression, Lupin often felt that Sirius might have preferred to have died in Azkaban. Yet Sirius didn't unleash his grief recklessly, and did not even break down in tears. After spending a long time alone in silence, he simply told Lupin that he wanted to hold a funeral for Regulus. What could Lupin say? Seeing the depth of Sirius's pain, Lupin could only do his best to support his requests. But hearing Wade's words, Lupin had to admit they made a lot of sense. What surprised him was that Wade wasn't focusing entirely on Sirius's perspective, as he was, but instead considering things from the viewpoint of the deceased Regulus. To transport Regulus's remains, they couldn't exactly shove the coffin into the Floo Network or carry it via Apparition. So, Lupin had to make another trip to borrow a carriage from Hagrid. By this time, the students had all left on the train, so Hagrid, having sent the Thestrals back to the school, brought a carriage to Sirius's house. Lupin cast an Extension Charm on the carriage, while Hagrid carefully cradled the coffin in his massive arms and placed it gently onto the wooden boards of the carriage. With a deep thud, the coffin settled into place, the sound low and heavy. Tears welled up in Hagrid's eyes, and soon they were dripping onto the edge of the carriage. "Regulus... I never liked him before. I thought he was just another one of those evil Slytherins..." Hagrid choked on his words, pulled out his enormous handkerchief to wipe his eyes and said in a trembling voice. "I didn't know he was such a good person... If only I'd invited him for a drink back when he was still at school..." Lupin gave a faint, bitter smile, and his expression was also tinged with sorrow. From this angle, the sky and earth seemed to be inverted, with the clouds appearing like a soft, white bed, beckoning travelers to lie down and rest. "Can we fly into the clouds, Remus?" Wade asked. Up in the high altitude, even though the magic shield blocked the howling wind, the sound of it still echoed in their ears. Lupin couldn't hear him, so he raised his voice and called, "What?" Wade had to ask again, louder. "We can't fly inside the clouds, we'd be soaked in an instant... oh..." Lupin suddenly noticed the shield around the carriage and understood. He tugged on the reins, and the Thestrals suddenly flapped their wings and plunged into the thick clouds. The view immediately turned to a vast, blinding white. It was as if the entire world had disappeared, and all they could see was the deep and shallow white rushing past. Wade felt as if even his breathing had become quiet.
