Chapter 67: Second Night!

Chapter 67: Second Night! A few hours passed, and Ken had just left the doctor’s house, leaving Darek and the doctor inside. By now, the doctor was starting to believe that Darek was the actual leader and not Ken, but evidence of how they treated one another spoke otherwise. Still, it didn’t stop him from being cautious. Since the day they came to the village, Darek had been following him everywhere, almost observing his every move. Though, the young man said that he was here to help and not really observing him; in fact, he was very truthful, replying to every question, and in a way, he believed that he was just tasked by Ken to help around because he was trusted. The two of them were once again sitting on the table watching as Ken’s figure left through the door. Both of the young men knew that today should be the last, though; it was all plans they had agreed upon before reaching the village. "Young Darek." The doctor called to Darek in a slightly familiar way. By now, he didn’t call him "esteemed sir" due to Darek’s request as well as constant exposure to one another. "Hmm? Yes, Doctor Han?" Darek looked at the doctor, expecting the new question to be quite important. The two of them had sat with Ken, and the latter had asked them many questions, such as if they had come across anything today. If they’ve noticed something strange and even hinted at the fact that he relied on them. He didn’t speak of anything like seeing the devil, implying that he was asleep the night before. Once again, this was spoken unintentionally to make him a target for the doctor. But he had also been forceful enough to make the doctor think that he was onto something. Thus, the doctor’s next questions were asked to see if Ken should be avoided at all costs... Or taken care of tonight. "I think that esteemed Sir Ken had been affected too much by Ralf’s unfortunate event." The doctor said. "So he might be skeptical about me, thinking that I might possibly be the person behind all of this." The doctor acted calmly, as if he had nothing to do with this, and spoke as if he understood Ken’s reasons for doing what he’s doing. "You might be right, but Ken has been touring the entire village, and from what we’ve agreed upon, he would be in charge of interrogations." "You’re saying he’s doing the same thing with everybody?" The doctor asked, almost not believing it. "That’s what I was aiming to say, yes." Darek agreed that those were his next words. "..." The doctor remained silent for a second. Then the two of them rose, one after the other, and headed towards the victims; it was time to give them their medicine for the last time today. "The people of this village are like my own children." The doctor started speaking. And Darek, upon hearing these words, looked at Ralf and the young mother who had been targeted the previous day and didn’t speak. But his mind was cursing the old man for daring to speak such words. "How confident are you guys in taking care of this matter?" The doctor faced Darek and asked. "... To be honest with you, Doctor, we aren’t sure when this can be done exactly." "We have a lot of procedures going on at the moment, but these are mostly to spot the contractor, whoever colluded with the devil." "You have yet to take care of the human... what about the actual problem? The supernatural being?" "Ken has told me that the next day would be when he’ll start actively looking for the devil, whether we are able to find the contractor or not." Darek said. "As I thought, we can certainly rely on the esteemed sir." The doctor smiled softly, and Darek nodded. "Ken might be the weakest of us, but he’s the most reliable." These words were what Darek and Ken had been wanting the doctor to hear since the previous day. "..." The doctor didn’t speak; he, as well, had gotten what he was looking for. Darek watched him silently, and the two of them gave each of the victims their dose of the medicine and returned to the house. Their job for the day was done. The doctor headed for the second floor without speaking a word, but Darek knew that this was the first time he had done so... after the time when he secretly took the dead victim up, thinking that Darek was sleeping and wouldn’t notice. ’A plan well played.’ Darek thought. Now, the chess pieces were set in place; it was time for the endgame. ------- Night fell, and everybody locked themselves in their homes; not a single man could be seen outside. And with it the reality of what was happening in the village hit back stronger than in the morning, reminding them that anybody could die at any time and taking away their joy and smiles. On one side, there was the doctor, who had since not gone down from the second floor. Darek, who was ready to deal the finishing blow, was preparing his tools for tonight’s assassination. Ken was on his bed, waiting for the devil to target him. And right next to him... a budding couple had yet to sleep. Alex and Marwa had much to talk about and, having to tour the village for the whole day, decided that the time to catch up on their feelings would be best left for the night. Nothing indecent was going on, but love... was suffocating the air around them. A devil... mad in love had finally got the chance to quench its thirst after a full day of beating hearts and longing for a lover from the enemy side. Such a romantic encounter, these feelings that weren’t encountered before. The emotionally weak devil walked through the village with explosions of emotions through its stomach as it thought of the first look it’ll have of its lover tonight. Alas... its love yet to be realized was already stolen by another lady. And these feelings that it couldn’t control would be the very reason for its doom. -----End-----
