Chapter 47: Come out After nightfall, the moon was in all its glory, and the night was darker than ever. The night breeze rustling the weeds and wildflowers carried the scent of grass and moisture in the air. Tonight was perfect for murder and espionage. In his room, Kael was finishing adjusting his black Taoist robe, made of iron spider silk. His eyes, black as the abyss, scanned the empty room before turning toward the window. After finishing, Kael, before making a move, mentally reviewed his plan, considering the different variables that could arise. He always thought about the worst possible scenario. After reviewing his plan, he made his move. He knew that with his father in the mansion, security and guards were extremely tight. Stepping out into the long hallway, where few servants were to be seen, Kael blended into the shadows, moving quickly and calculatedly, making as little noise as possible. The two servants stopped dead in their tracks when a shadow crossed in front of them. "Did you feel that?" whispered the first, holding his breath. "As if someone had brushed past me..." "You’re getting paranoid," replied the other, stifling a yawn. "Tiredness is playing tricks on you." "It’s not my imagination..." insisted the first, lowering his voice. "What if those stories about the fanatics of the Holy Empire were true?" The second laughed wearily. "Ha ha ha... We’d better go to sleep. Tomorrow is another day of work." The two servants continued walking as if nothing had happened. Further ahead, Kael, with his indifferent expression, moved among the shadows. After walking through the corridors, he arrived at the north garden. The gentle night breeze blew against his face, leaving behind the scent of carefully cultivated flowers. Before continuing onward, Kael inspected the area. His dark eyes scanned the surroundings with precision. Thanks to the moonlight, he could see a pair of knights following two maids toward the stables. It didn’t take a genius to figure out what those people were up to. But Kael wasn’t the least bit interested and continued running through the garden. As he passed by a small puddle, he saw his reflection distorted; shortly after, he also saw some shadows pass quickly. After crossing the entire north garden, Kael climbed the wall with agility and speed. On the other side, he found himself on a cobbled street, where he could see several commoners and peasants pulling their donkeys loaded with wheat. "Today was a good day, son. See? With that technique I taught you, the wheat stalks fall like feathers in the wind," said a father, smiling as he adjusted the donkey’s reins. The son, frowning and clenching his fists with determination, replied, "Yes, father... It’s good. But mine is even better. All I need is strength." The father laughed warmly and ruffled the eleven-year-old boy’s hair: "Hahaha! You’ll have to wait another hundred years to beat this old man." Kael listened for a moment before continuing on his way; he had no time to waste, and he mingled with the commoners and farmers who were chatting happily. The city, with its clean streets free of trash, was filled with commoners who were not dressed in rags. Now that night had fallen, the squares were filled with food stalls and games, with families strolling through them. "Get your corn on the cob, hot off the coals!" "With cream, cheese, chili, and even a little love!" "How much do you want, young man? One with lots of chili? I’ll make it just the way you like it!" "Don’t think twice! You have to cry to enjoy it, and this corn will make your taste buds cry!" "Hey! Anyone up for a chance to win big? Nothing ventured, nothing gained... and he who doesn’t play doesn’t win!" Kael didn’t bother to look at the activity. He walked calmly among the commoners, his black eyes lacking any sparkle. Little by little, he distanced himself from the hustle and bustle of the city until he reached the great walls that protected the place. They were full of guards who watched for possible attacks and also inspected the few peasants who entered. Kael glanced sideways at the guards and took another route out of the city without being noticed. Once outside, he found himself back in the thick forest. He looked around calmly before moving. He began to run westward at full speed, toward the inheritance left behind by the Demonic Wolf. The clouds covering the sky moved slowly, revealing a silver moon that bathed Kiran Mountain in its light. A gentle night breeze rustled the branches of trees and bushes, creating an eerie sound. In the distance, the murmur of a river and the buzzing of night insects enlivened the forest. In the middle of that place, a human figure moved quickly through the undergrowth. As it passed a bush, a swarm of blood-red grasshoppers fluttered, splattering the air with their bodies. Several nocturnal birds, moon owls, and pink bats took flight, disturbed by its passing. Kael kept his breathing steady, but his eyes darted around, scanning the surroundings to avoid the creatures lurking in the darkness. His footprints were left on the damp ground as he moved forward, and little by little, the moonlight grew brighter, unobstructed by the trees. After a few minutes, he emerged from the forest and stopped in front of a large waterfall. Holding his breath, he looked around cautiously and carefully. Then Kael turned toward the forest and spoke in a cold voice: "Come out." However, the forest remained silent. There was not the slightest sound; everything felt strangely... natural. This did not surprise him. He had sensed that they had been following him from the north garden. His eyes flashed with a cold light, and he began to speak again: "I see... Come out. You have been following me from the north garden." Even so, the forest remained silent, with the wind rustling the grass and wildflowers. Kael stood still, staring intently into the forest, his Taoist robe fluttering in the breeze and the sound of the waterfall filling his ears. So they’re not coming out? They were trained pretty well. I don’t know how many there are either. He hadn’t attacked because they outnumbered him. And he wasn’t hot-blooded enough to believe that his strength could defeat a well-trained group. Kael circulated his mana essence from his core to his dantian, taking extreme care not to let his pursuers notice anything out of the ordinary. His mind had already considered many options, most of which were failures. He turned and walked toward the noisy waterfalls. And, without thinking, he threw himself into the water.
