He really felt like laughing.
However, he didn’t know that Little White Dragon’s return to the West Sea wasn’t bringing the good he imagined.
At Mount Ling, atop the Buddha’s seat, sat a new figure.
Lamp-Burning Ancient Buddha sat below, looking up at the person in the Buddha’s seat with a face full of reverence.
Even though this person had once been his disciple, the heights he had now reached were beyond his reach.
All the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of Mount Ling were visibly excited; they were thrilled to the extreme by the Buddha’s return, as if foreseeing the prosperity of Mount Ling.
It was as if in the Three Realms, he alone was revered.
Only one person’s expression darkened, looking somewhat unpleasant.
“Jin Chan.”
The Buddha’s gaze swept over everyone and finally landed on Jin Chan.
Jin Chan stood up, his demeanor utterly submissive, as he prostrated himself before Tathagata.
A glint of amusement flashed through Tathagata’s eyes as he said indifferently, “Jin Chan, since you have already awakened and merged with the part of Tripitaka’s persona, why pretend with me?
Surely you don’t think you can deceive my eyes.”
Jin Chan’s body stiffened, and he abruptly raised his head, staring at Tathagata and asked, “You’ve seen through it all.”
Tathagata Buddha chuckled slightly and said, “The techniques within you were placed by me.
You’ve undone them, and of course, I can tell.
Otherwise, I would be quite the fool.”
The subservient expression disappeared from Jin Chan’s face as he stared at Tathagata Buddha, his expression gradually cooling.
“Since it is so, Master, how do you intend to deal with me?”
His lips curled with a hint of disdain, showing little regard for Tathagata.
Tathagata smiled faintly and stated, “You are already on the verge of becoming a Great Heavenly Venerate, just one step away from reaching it.
Why would I deal with you?
My own disciple becoming a powerful entity of the Great Heavenly Venerate Realm is more than enough to make me happy.”
A trace of suspicion flashed across Jin Chan’s face as he stared oddly at Tathagata, almost believing he had misheard.
Could Tathagata truly say such human words?
Could it be a ruse?
Before he could ponder further, Tathagata spoke up, his voice cheerful, “Jin Chan, from today onwards, I appoint you as the Second Buddha Ancestor of Mount Ling, second only to me in rank.
What do you think?”
Jin Chan was ungrateful and even more wary.
He stared at Tathagata and said with a cold laugh, “Enough.
Just tell me directly what you are up to.
What’s your scheme?
How do you want me to die?”
Jin Chan asked several questions, all aimed at Tathagata.
However, he didn’t feel he was wrong to do so.
He understood Tathagata’s nature all too well.
Tathagata could talk to you with a face full of compassion and then kill you with the same compassionate look.
Anyone who thinks Tathagata is a good person is not far from death.
Tathagata Buddha said indifferently, “After all, you and I are master and disciple.
I want to develop Mount Ling and need a powerful ally.
I can help you become a Great Heavenly Venerate, but I hope you can also help me, to strengthen Mount Ling and the Buddhist Realm.”
Jin Chan’s gaze was piercing as he stared at Tathagata, saying coldly, “You should know my ambition, wanting to replace you.”
Tathagata smiled faintly, unbothered.
With a relaxed smile, he stated, “Even if you want to take my place, there’s no need to be my adversary.
If your strength surpasses mine, then the position will naturally be yours.”
Jin Chan suddenly understood, much like Lamp-Burning Ancient Buddha who had yielded his position.
Since Tathagata Buddha had surpassed Lamp-Burning Ancient Buddha, the latter naturally stepped down.
If he could surpass Tathagata Buddha, then Tathagata Buddha would naturally yield the position.
Whatever the change in positions, their main concern was to not weaken the power of Mount Ling.
Upon realizing this, Jin Chan pondered for a moment, then finally said, “I agree.”
“Very good.”
Tathagata Buddha revealed a smile.
The others too realized what was happening and immediately began to bow to Jin Chan.
“Greetings, Second Buddha Ancestor.”
Jin Chan felt a rush of excitement, as if his head was swelling with blood.
Imitating Tathagata Buddha, he gently lifted his hand and said, “No need for such formalities, everyone.”
At that moment, Tathagata extended his finger.
Next to Tathagata, a Nine-Colored Lotus Platform appeared, reserved for Jin Chan’s position, only slightly lower than his own.
Even the positions of Lamp-Burning Ancient Buddha and Maitreya Buddha were not as high as Jin Chan’s.
Though they felt some dissatisfaction, they maintained their composure on the outside.
Now that Jin Chan’s strength was greater than theirs, and he was about to become a Great Heavenly Venerate, they naturally did not wish to contend with him.
Once he stepped into the Great Heavenly Venerate, his status would rise even higher, and they would be even less able to compare.
“From today, all the spiritual teachings in the Eastern Continent will be turned into Buddhist Temples, and all deities worshipped inside will be replaced with my image.”
Tathagata gave the order.
For he was ready to act.
Having controlled the Netherworld for over twenty years, he had already accomplished what was needed.
This was why he knew of Great Emperor Ziwei reclaiming the Netherworld, yet did not intervene.
The Netherworld was no longer of much use to Mount Ling.
“Yes.”
Wind-Listening Great Sage stepped forward, immediately going to carry out the task.
To this junior disciple of Tathagata, the Bodhisattvas of Mount Ling still held great reverence.
Even though Macaque King had not yet entered the realm of Heavenly Venerate, his strength alone was enough that ordinary Heavenly Venerates dared not claim they could defeat him.
Furthermore, being Tathagata’s favored junior disciple, no one dared to offend him.
