Yun Sheng’s last visit to the General Mansion was over a year ago.
Back then, her clothes were tattered and torn, having just left Banana Leaf Village; she was nothing more than a downcast little Magician seeking refuge at the General Mansion.
Upon arriving at the entrance of the Martial Saint General Mansion, she was mocked and scorned by Tang Yu, who set dogs on her. However, now re-entering the General Mansion, she was the respected elder of the Medicine Hall in the esteemed Wuxuan Wuji Hall; this was something that Yun Cangxue and her son could never have imagined, even in their wildest dreams.
The guard at the entrance was clearly familiar with Zhan Li; upon seeing him, he respectfully addressed him as "Vice Hall Director."
Even though the great healers of the Medicine Emperor Pavilion had declared Yun Canglang’s chronic condition incurable, Zhan Li remained unyielding. "How has little brother been faring lately? A new doctor with exceptional medical skill has arrived at the Martial Arts Hall’s Medicine Hall; I’ve brought her to take a look at you," he said.
Over the years, he had brought every excellent doctor he could find to the Martial Saint General Mansion, yet all were to no avail.
The guards of the General Mansion had grown accustomed to this, but upon seeing Yun Sheng, suspicion crept across their faces.
The doctor Zhan Daren brought this time seemed far too young.
If judged by appearances, she seemed to be about the same age as the young master Tang Yu of the General Mansion. At this age, the young masters of the mansion would only indulge in eating, drinking, gambling, fighting, and causing trouble.
Zhan Li bore no blame towards them; had he not witnessed Yun Sheng’s medical skills himself, he would never have believed that this young girl possessed such extraordinary talent.
After making inquiries and learning that Yun Canghai was at the residence, he took Yun Sheng directly to the courtyard where Yun Canghai lived.
The Martial Saint General Mansion, true to its reputation as a military family’s home, featured a simple yet grandiose layout with tall, spacious gates, well-pruned trees, and vast courtyards, allowing Yun Sheng to move freely and smoothly.
Though no one was seen along the way, Yun Sheng could faintly sense that in unnoticed corners, pairs of watchful eyes were keenly observing every movement around them.
Barely a few steps inside the mansion gates, they were met by an elderly man.
Upon seeing him, Zhan Li hurriedly bowed in respect: "Old General!"
The newcomer was none other than the renowned Martial Saint General of Great Zhou, Yun Bahe.
His own grandfather?
Yun Sheng silently observed Yun Bahe with her head lowered, this being her first encounter with the legendary Martial Saint General.
Yun Bahe, around seventy years of age, bore the rough-hewn countenance of a weathered tree bark, a square face, bronze-purple skin, and a head of grayish lead-colored hair, due to years of campaigning on the battlefield.
What was most intimidating about the Old General, however, were his eyes. Even though the eye sockets were deep and surrounded by wrinkles, one look into those eyes felt as though they were brimming with killing intent.
"Zhan Li, you’re here. What kind of doctor have you brought this time to treat Canghai? You’ve really gone to great lengths. You have to manage the vast Wuji Pavilion and still remember to care for him," chuckled Yun Bahe, stroking his beard.
He had watched Zhan Li grow up and overcome numerous hurdles to reach his position today.
If that calamity on the battlefield had not happened years ago, Zhan Li would not have left the barracks; he would surely have grown to be one of Great Zhou’s most brilliant military talents alongside Yun Canghai.
Alas...
The eyes of the Old General dimmed slightly as he turned his gaze to the doctor standing next to Zhan Li.
His gaze sharp, he immediately noticed the Magic Wand at Yun Sheng’s waist, and his expression changed slightly upon seeing the Magic Wand.
Yun Canghai’s past had instilled a deep-rooted hostility towards mages in everyone at Yun Residence, and Zhan Li knew this too; yet why would he still bring a mage to the General Mansion today?
Seeing a layer of anger surfacing on Yun Canghai’s face, Zhan Li hurriedly explained, "Old General, she is a doctor invited by our Medicine Hall. Despite her young age, her medical skills are quite exceptional."
In Great Zhou City, mages have become popular in recent years, and it’s common for residences of Third-Ranking Officials and above to employ staff and guests, among whom are often mages.
However, the Martial Saint General Mansion is the sole exception without a single mage.
The reason behind this is closely related to Yun Canghai, the long-absent eldest son of the General Mansion.
"She is a doctor? Then why does she carry a Magic Wand?" Yun Bahe gave Yun Sheng a stern look.
The average person would lose their wits from a glare by Yun Canghai, but Yun Sheng showed no fear, staring back at Yun Bahe as if stubbornly contesting him.
"Old General, this child practices both Magic Potion and Ancient Medical Skill," Zhan Li knew of Yun Bahe’s prejudice against mages, but Yun Sheng’s medical prowess had won him over, pushing aside any concerns he might have had.
"Absurd, practicing both Magic Potion and Ancient Medical Skill is unheard of, and moreover, she is so young. It’s hard enough to master one, not to mention both," what Yun Bahe despised the most was such a jack-of-all-trades learning attitude.
In his early years, Yun Canghai insisted on the Dual Cultivation of Magic and Martial Arts. He had reluctantly agreed, not knowing that this decision would create an opportunity for Yun Canghai to later switch to studying magic.
"Old General, I didn’t believe it either, but she truly made it work," Zhan Li was afraid that if Yun Bahe was unwilling, he would drive Yun Sheng away, and then Yun Canglang would really have no chance.
He recounted the incident at Wuxuan Wuji Hall a few days earlier, where a disciple had lost control due to magical deviation. After hearing this, Yun Bahe was skeptical.
"Are you sure this is her own idea? I have never heard of such a treatment before," Yun Bahe remained unconvinced.
"If you don’t trust me, then I’m not willing to treat," Yun Sheng couldn’t be bothered with Yun Bahe’s resentment. Seeing how gruff the old man looked, she had no interest in dealing with him.
Having said that, she turned to leave.
"You little girl, showing no respect for your elders!" Yun Bahe was outraged. He was of an advanced age and held a prominent position; to think he had to rely on a young girl’s good graces today.
What stressed Zhan Li the most was that both the old and the young had such stubborn tempers.
He couldn’t persuade either side, and right as he felt perplexed.
"Dad, come quick, my second brother’s condition has flared up again, he’s losing his temper wildly, I can’t hold him back," Yun Cangxue rushed over with two maids in a hurry.
She was visibly agitated and looked panicked. On spotting Zhan Li, she nodded at him as a greeting.
Upon hearing this, Yun Bahe no longer had the mind to argue with Yun Sheng and hurriedly scrambled towards the inner courtyard.
"Yanyun, when my second brother’s hysteria acts up again, since you’ve already come to the General Mansion, why hurry off? Do me a favor and come inside to see my second brother first; he... he’s someone in need," Zhan Li, always filled with steely pride, has never begged so humbly before. Now his eyes were red-rimmed, his face etched with anxiety.
Turns out that what plagued Yun Canglang all these years wasn’t just physical disability, but more so, the mental trauma from that battle had never healed.
At that moment, a bestial roar came from the inner courtyard. Unable to hold back any longer, Zhan Li, regardless of whether Yun Sheng agreed or not, grabbed her hand and dashed chaotically towards the courtyard where Yun Canglang resided.
