This world is truly small.
Yun Sheng was stunned; she never thought she would encounter Ye Beiming under such circumstances.
Since parting in Banana Leaf Village over a year ago, she wondered how Ye Huli was doing - his eyes should have recovered by now, right?
Crown Prince Ye Beilian of Great Zhou was still waiting on the long street below the tavern, which led directly to the Dazhou Imperial Palace, the essential path to the palace.
Yun Sheng’s feelings toward Ye Beiming were complex; after obtaining half of his Magic Soul, she fled without looking back.
Logically speaking, she was supposed to observe Ye Beiming’s condition for a while after the corneal surgery, but at that time, the situation was urgent, and Yun Sheng couldn’t stay in Banana Leaf Village waiting for him to wake up.
She remembered the words that Ye Beiming spoke before he fell into a deep sleep very clearly.
At that time, he was a stingy person, extremely cunning and scheming. If he knew she was also in Yujing City, there’s no telling how he would get back at her.
Seeing that Yun Sheng’s expression was a bit off, Lin Yao’er waved her hand in front of Yun Sheng’s face, "What are you thinking about?"
Yun Sheng smiled awkwardly, gave the waiter a silver coin, and asked with a gossipy look, "Young man, we are indeed outsiders. It’s pretty lively down there. Who is the Beiming King?"
A single silver coin was worth more than half a month’s earnings to the waiter. Upon receiving the silver coin, he began to spill the beans, almost laying out the Beiming King’s entire ancestry.
The Beiming King, Ye Beiming, was the second son of the Emperor of Great Zhou. Though young, his life story was full of dramatic twists and turns, quite fascinating indeed.
He was born into nobility yet pitiable as well; before he was even born, he was designated as the Crown Prince, but when he came into the world, he was blind.
In his childhood, his birth mother became involved in palace intrigue, and Ye Beiming was deposed thereafter, confined under the pretext of healing in the Cold Palace for several years, until a little over a year ago when he left the Cold Palace.
As the waiter came to the exciting part of the story, he paused, and Lin Yao’er, caught up in the tale, quickly urged him on and even poured him a cup of tea to wet his throat.
"The Cold Palace, that’s a ghostly place that devours people without spitting out bones. Think about it, a blind man, his Empress Dowager mother is dead, no one in the court to protect him. Everyone thought the Beiming King was as good as dead," the waiter narrated with great enthusiasm, almost like a storyteller, "but the Beiming King survived. Over a year ago, his sight miraculously returned. He appeared at court and volunteered to capture the Blood Cloud Beasts across the lands."
The peril of the Blood Cloud Beasts was known throughout the nation. Over the years, the Beast Blood Clouds had frequently appeared, and the Magic Temple, Hunter Soldier Alliance, and military forces of various countries had dispatched troops to hunt them down.
However, only those who had encountered the Blood Cloud Beasts knew how formidable they were. Yun Sheng knew Ye Beiming was strong, but she never expected that he was so powerful that he would go alone to capture Blood Cloud Beasts.
"In the past year or so, without relying on any soldiers, the Beiming King single-handedly captured dozens of Blood Cloud Beasts. The Emperor of Great Zhou was overjoyed and, a year ago, conferred the title of Beiming King to the former Crown Prince Ye Beiming. Recently, a Blood Cloud Beast was discovered on the Eastern Border. Prince Ye set out with two friends and successfully defeated the vicious Blood Cloud Beast. He’s returning with the beast today, and the Crown Prince was ordered to welcome him back," the waiter finished speaking, also glancing at the street a few times.
"In that case, it seems fitting for the Crown Prince to come for the welcome. But who is that lady standing beside the Crown Prince?" Lin Yao’er noticed Chen Lianlian standing with the Crown Prince.
Lin Yao’er, new to Yujing, did not recognize Chen Lianlian. However, judging by her attire, she seemed more than an average imperial concubine, yet she was dressed elegantly, emanating an air of nobility, suggesting she was a woman of status.
"Hehe, she is the Crown Princess Consort designated by the Emperor of Great Zhou. I’ve heard that she and the Beiming King were childhood sweethearts. After the Beiming King was deposed, she became the Consort of the current Crown Prince," the waiter whispered.
Hearing this, Lin Yao’er’s expression showed disdain. Such a woman, she figured, was fickle; even with a beautiful appearance, she couldn’t conceal the opportunism in her heart.
Meanwhile, a quarter of an hour passed. Even though the New Year celebrations were over, it was still cold. Chen Lianlian, dressed thinly for the sake of appearance and being a Mage with a rather ordinary constitution, stood on the street corner for a long time, her face turning pale with cold.
Seeing this, Yun Sheng took note, a mischievous thought suddenly arising in her heart.
She tightened her grip on her Magic Wand within her sleeve and instantly cast a Wind Magic spell.
A gust of cold wind swept through the street.
"Brr--so cold," Chen Lianlian grumbled non-stop, wishing she hadn’t come had she known the wait would be this long.
Several days ago, when she heard that Ye Beiming had successfully slain the Blood Cloud Beast at the Eastern Border, she couldn’t help but be tempted to catch a glimpse of him.
Remembering the handsome boy from her childhood who would do anything she asked, Chen Lianlian couldn’t help but puff out her chest with pride.
The Crown Prince’s face didn’t look too great either, not because of the cold, but because he, the illustrious Crown Prince of Dazhou, had been left hanging in the street for a full half-hour, which was undoubtedly vexing for the prideful Crown Prince Ye Beilian.
"Here they come, they’re coming," a sound of carriages and horses neared from up ahead.
The crowds on the street turned their heads en masse to look.
On the restaurant balcony, Yun Sheng also glanced over without thinking.
Atop a fine horse rode a man...
Having not been seen for over a year, the youth had long shed his former immaturity.
The Beiming King of Dazhou now entered everyone’s sight.
Without any burdensome royal adornments or splendid robes, his long hair danced freely in the wind. He wore no hair bun nor a Jade Crown like Ye Beilian, just a simple black attire on a fine horse.
Yet, it was this plain garb that caused all eyes to focus on the man’s face—an emaciated yet handsome face brimming with raw masculinity.
On the street, gasps filled the air.
Even Lin Yao’er, sitting opposite Yun Sheng, couldn’t help but feel her heartbeat quicken.
But Yun Sheng’s eyes were fixated on Ye Beiming’s own.
The corneal transplant was a great success.
Despite his thoroughly impeccable appearance, Ye Beiming’s eyes were undoubtedly the most striking aspect.
With phoenix eyes and a stature as sturdy as a pine, the lazy and unruly light flickering in his gray pupils, the black-clad Ye Beiming rode in like a fierce flame, igniting the eyes of everyone on Yujing’s streets as if sweeping through dry brush.
It wasn’t just the common folks on either side of the street who were stunned; even Chen Lianlian herself stood agape beside the Crown Prince.
She hadn’t expected that, after years of absence, not only had Ye Beiming regained his sight, but he had also grown into such a towering figure. Compared to him, Crown Prince Ye Beilian beside her paled in all aspects except for title.
The surrounding crowd burst into murmurs as well, the meeting of the former Crown Prince and the current Crown Prince was indeed a rare spectacle. They were all wondering what would happen next.
The Crown Prince too noticed Chen Lianlian’s and the commoners’ discussions and snorted quietly, glancing at the eunuch in charge next to him. He would never allow Ye Beiming to overshadow him.
Grasping the signal, the eunuch immediately understood, flicked his horsetail whisk, and with a high-pitched voice shouted: "Crown Prince has been waiting here for a long time, Beiming King kneel and salute."
