Chapter 212: Chapter 213: Strange Environment
This was a completely unfamiliar island, and Jotaro was extremely cautious with every action.
Miss Wednesday and Mr. 9 followed weakly behind him.
All along the way, it was as if they were in a primitive forest, almost everything in sight were large trees wrapped with vines.
Looking at these vines as thick as giant pythons, Miss Wednesday irritably kicked one.
The vine’s surface, which had purplish-red tumor-like lumps, was struck, and with a "puchi" sound it burst open. Countless corrosive dust particles sprayed out from within.
"What are you doing!"
Jotaro shouted sternly, reaching out to quickly push her away.
A transparent green liquid sprayed onto the plants beside her, and the plants immediately began emitting sizzling smoke.
Seeing this, Miss Wednesday felt a lingering fear.
"These plants are very strange, and they probably all carry deadly poison. Don’t touch them casually." Jotaro warned.
Miss Wednesday muttered softly, "Would someone really live in a place like this?"
"You’d better pray that someone lives on this island. Only then can we get a log pose."
Nami knocked on her head.
Mr. 9 looked like he had seen a ghost and instinctively stepped back towards Jotaro. "Mosquitoes, really big mosquitoes!"
Above his head hovered a swarm of mosquitoes, each about twenty times larger than the ones normally seen.
They buzzed "bzzz" over everyone’s heads, their huge eyes revealing a thirst for fresh blood.
Most women are afraid of bugs.
Not to mention that what they were facing now were not only numerous but also enormous blood-sucking mosquitoes.
Sure enough, the jungle was soon filled with endless screams.
Jotaro’s face was dark and terrifying.
"All of you shut up!"
He stared at the giant mosquitoes flying around him and calmly said, "I’ve been wondering since just now, so this is the reason."
"The creatures on this island are at least about twenty times larger than the ones we usually see!"
Compared to Nami and Miss Wednesday, Nezuko appeared very calm.
First, she wasn’t afraid of insects.
Second, with Jotaro by her side, her trust in him made her unafraid of anything around.
"No wonder I thought the patterns on these flowers looked familiar, turns out I’d seen them back in the East Blue before."
Nezuko pointed at the variety of colorful flowers beside her, suddenly realizing.
The roots, stems, and leaves of these flowers were much larger than those seen in the East Blue, and their blooming petals resembled a windmill.
At first, she thought they were entirely new species.
Jotaro reminded, "Be careful, the enlargement might not just be in size. Some properties of these creatures might have changed too."
"This isn’t the time to talk about that," Nami said, holding her head and hiding behind Jotaro. "Hurry and think of a way, these mosquitoes are already flying over."
The giant mosquitoes had long been attracted by the scent coming from these people, and now they suddenly moved, swooping down like hawks towards Jotaro and the others.
"Ora ora ora ora!"
Smack! Smack! Smack! Smack!
The mosquitoes that lunged forward exploded in an orderly fashion from front to back, instantly turning into splashes of blood in mid-air.
Their size was about the same as Star Platinum’s fists, so each punch could easily take one down.
In just a few dozen seconds, the mosquitoes were completely wiped out.
"That’s terrifying!" Mr. 9 said with lingering fear. "If those mosquitoes had bitten us, they might have sucked us dry on the spot."
Having been in the Grand Line for so long, it was the first time he had seen mosquitoes the size of fists.
This island radiated weirdness everywhere. If Jotaro hadn’t forbidden it, he would’ve long gone back to the ship.
"Be glad these mosquitoes only got twenty times bigger instead of twenty times smaller, or else we’d have an even harder time dealing with them." Jotaro wasn’t joking.
If they really were twenty times smaller, it wouldn’t be much of an issue for someone with Star Platinum.
But for the others, it would be a deadly disaster.
The creatures on this island all carried toxins in their bodies, and mosquitoes were no exception.
Being bitten by them would be far more than just an itchy problem.
"From now on, all of you stay by my side and don’t leave my sight."
Jotaro looked into the depths of the jungle, feeling an ominous premonition.
After eliminating the giant mosquitoes, Star Platinum remained floating beside him, keeping watch over the surroundings.
"Why don’t we just go back?" Nami said fearfully. "A place like this obviously can’t have anyone living here."
Miss Wednesday nodded in agreement.
The quiet and eerie environment made her feel uneasy.
"Ora!"
Star Platinum tore apart the thorns blocking the way, and Jotaro continued deeper in.
"You know what, you guys should head back. I’ll go take a look by myself."
Just as Mr. 9 turned around, he saw that the vine coiled around a towering tree behind them was writhing and moving.
"Giant python!"
Hiss!
The giant python let out a painful hiss and collapsed with a loud crash.
It then writhed wildly on the ground, thrashing madly, and in moments, it stopped moving.
"D... dead?"
"It was the ants that did it," Jotaro said, having stopped at some point and turned back to speak.
In Star Platinum’s vision, the lifeless python’s body was covered with ants the size of eggs.
The python had been bitten to death by them.
Their sizes were vastly different.
Although the ants were the size of eggs, that was only about the size of the python’s eyeball.
Yet in the end, the python lost and became their food.
"How could ants possibly beat a python this size..." Mr. 9 found it hard to believe.
Jotaro explained, "These should be a kind of army ant. Aside from having sharp mandibles, they can also release venom from their mouths..."
He paused.
To be honest, the scene before him was shocking even to him.
Army ants could indeed kill a python, but it usually required enough numbers, possibly millions.
Yet before them was only a small squad of ants.
And this small squad had easily killed a python far larger than themselves, something incredibly terrifying.
It showed that each ant here possessed astonishing strength.
Ants can lift objects 10 to 50 times their own weight, and some species, like leafcutter ants, can even reach around 100 times.
But that was on a small scale.
If ants were enlarged to human size, it would be difficult for them to retain such astonishing strength, their bone density and muscle strength wouldn’t keep up with their increased size.
Jotaro knew this.
Yet the ants before him had kept their terrifying power even after growing in size.
He couldn’t imagine how tough their bodies must be.
Fear appeared in Nami’s eyes, her little face turning pale as she retreated to Jotaro’s side.
’I... I suddenly don’t want to go back anymore.’
She felt it was safer staying by Jotaro’s side.
