Chapter 32: You wanted a villain? Fine. I’ll be one In case it wasn’t obvious, Cass wasn’t a forgiving person. He never had been. His childhood hadn’t permitted it. He hadn’t had the time, nor the power to give someone a second chance if they had fucked with him. Especially if it was a physical injury. Emotional hurts? Maybe, but physical? When food was scarce and you needed all of your limbs to be working and healthy? Not a damn chance. So not only had all of them walked all over his concerns, his warnings, and everything else, they had also hurt him. Physically. Even if the wound was apparently for his own good, that didn’t mean shit. No one had even offered an apology. They had instead sampled his fucking BLOOD like it was a fine liquor and called him a freak without saying the word. Not only was Cass offended, he was hurt. Wounded both inside and outside. He had thought he was going to be able to at least trust one of them, but all of them had been involved. Including Lady Ava. He had to disregard the whole lot. He could forgive Sam because, again, what the fuck was a normal human supposed to do against the lot of them? But the rest? Cass knew what kind of control Lady Ava had over the party. If she had said one word, things might have changed. She hadn’t. She’d let it happen. And Lady Fiona? She asked for it to happen. Any and all affection he had for them dried up. So what if she looked like his sister? That didn’t matter to him. Nevermind the men. He couldn’t give a fuck about the men on a good day. This was a bad, bad day. If he had full use of his body he would have killed them, like Draken had said. Ooo. Draken. Thinking of the smug way he’d looked at him, like he’d bested him in some way, had really made Cass angry. He was on his hit list. Cass wasn’t even sure if he wanted to rehabilitate his image on this behaviour alone. How could a group of people get together and do this to someone? And think that they were in the right after they had harmed him? Had they forgotten that he was weak? Ill? That his body didn’t function in the same way as theirs did? That his diet was heavily restricted, his whole life managed without his consent, and that he was genuinely a powerful mage? No, they couldn’t have known some of that, Lord Blackburn did his best to hide that from them. But then they let Draken of all people injure him. To prevent him from getting violent and hurting others. Which wouldn’t have happened if they had left him alone in the first place and had respected him when he’d asked them to leave. Granted, he’d been worked up, but that should have been even more of a sign to leave. Instead, they had needled and poked him, getting him more worked up. Making it even harder for him to calm himself down and had resulted in his magic apparently exploding. And now, he was limp, twitching, furious and alone in his office. They hadn’t even attempted to clean him up before he’d snapped at them. Thankfully they were gone now. And Cass also knew he was being a little unreasonable with his last thought. They should have left. They did the right thing by finally listening to him, he just found fault with everything that they had done up to that point. Sam was a flustered mess as soon as the door was closed. He looked concerned, afraid, and his hands were shaking. "M-My Lord, I am so-" "Don’t apologise." Cass cut him off coldly. Sam froze, and he looked like he was going to cry. "Just get something to clean me up." Cass ordered and watched as Sam raced out of his office. Cass closed his eyes, sighing, and ignored the way his chest hurt. He only knew about the marking, what Draken did to him, through the book. It was a boorish and old school method for his race to form a bond with their chosen partner. It wasn’t a life bond, but a promise for as long as the other party was alive. But, it wasn’t complete. If Cass didn’t have sex with Draken before the few months this mark remained on his skin, it would break. Fade away. Cass was now determined to get everything fucking done and leave in a few months. The reason why he had hated the mention of the marking in the book was the perks that Draken got from it. He could track the other party, and sense snippets of their emotions because of the marking. He could sense more of what they were feeling when they were directed towards him. Of course, in the book it was painted in a romantic light. How cute would it be to be able to know where Lady Fiona was at all time? What if she was ever in trouble? Draken would be able to get to her and save her! And of course, there was the idea that if they were having an intimate moment, Draken would be able to tell if he was pleasuring her just right, and it would intensify the feelings for both parties. That was right. If you had sex before the mark faded, the other party also got the same thing that Draken experienced. Forever. You would be able to track the other party until you died. There was no way to remove it either. It was permanent. Too bad for Cass and Lord Blackburn that he didn’t know about the added effect of suppressing magic, but that was never something that needed to be brought up in the book. Lady Fiona wasn’t a mage. She never would gain the use to use magic. A deeper, harder hurt was that Lady Fiona had used something he had told her in confidence to assume that Cass would be okay with a man marking him to prevent his magic from surging. She wouldn’t have done the same thing for any of the other men, but because he had admitted that he was ’like them’, she had jumped to a conclusion that wasn’t true. Who the hell would be okay with something like this? Who would want Draken of all people to be able to track him? It was infuriating. It was aggravating. It was annoying, and a breach of his privacy. Now Cass was going to have to fucking negotiate with Draken about the tracking of him. He was going to have to negotiate with a man who didn’t need anything, didn’t want anything, and was clearly here just to kill time. Who had only married his current wife to satiate his curiousity. What the fuck could he offer a man like that? What was he willing to offer a man like that? Especially one who Cass was going to be disgusted just to see the outline of in the distance? Cass sighed, remaining lopsided in his chair as his body shook. He actually felt like this was the first moment that this body really didn’t feel like his own. He couldn’t control it. He couldn’t even understand what was going on inside of him at the moment. The way his lower body was tingling, twitching, yearning was something he’d never experienced before. It wasn’t as if he hadn’t touched another man or woman before. Hell, Lady Fiona had carried him, so why was it when Draken bit him that his body reacted this way? Why was his body reacting this way? Cass could say that objectively, everyone around him was attractive. He wasn’t blind. They were the main characters of a romance novel. They were going to be attractive, even if Cass wanted to strangle their necks. Hell, he’d even teased Draken before, in the hallway. His body hadn’t reacted this way then. So why now? What had changed? Was it the magic? Did Lord Blackburn get a raging boner every time he used magic, or was there something else going on? Lord Blackburn had too many secrets, and Cass hadn’t been able to find them out. He also hadn’t received all of his memories. This would be a lot easier if Lord Blackburn had left a diary or journal of some kind. It was smart that he hadn’t, but it sucked for Cass as he tried to pick up all the pieces he’d been given. Now that he had been betrayed by the people around him, he could feel the reluctance in his body to do as the ’gods’ wanted. Maybe he should steal the relic. Maybe he should let everything play out. Fuck the ’gods’, fuck the heroes, fuck everyone. He didn’t even want to be here, he was just doing this to protect his unborn nieces or nephews. And those fuckers were the reason he wasn’t even going to be able to meet them. The disrespectful one was the reason he had been killed early, or that was the impression that Cass was under. Fuck. This was a damn nightmare, and he didn’t even have anyone he could rely on, or ask for help. He was on his own, and now, he really felt that. His body wasn’t his own, he had no friends or people to turn to, and he had to do a damn near impossible task without all of the information that he needed. He really shouldn’t have accepted that damn deal.
