Chapter 145: Everything’s good, right Doc?

Words : 1721 Updated : Sep 23rd, 2025
Chapter 145: Everything’s good, right Doc? It was only a few days later that the Doctor that Sir Forsythe had found came back for a check up. They arrived in a similar fashion, only this time Cass made sure that they didn’t arrive on a rushed Sir Forsythe’s horse. Instead, he sent out a carriage, a fully functioning carriage with Sir Forsythe as an escort and then they arrived. Sam stood by anxiously as the Doctor took in Cass’ current condition. They had removed their hood once they had entered the room, showing off their features a bit more as they looked over Cass’ wounds and body. "Have you had any strange symptoms?" They asked and Cass didn’t even stand a chance. Cass opened his mouth, but Sam was already there, spilling. "There was a time when he started crying blood, and his breathing became harsh and raspy. We had to feed him the tonic. His pulse was getting faint, and-" The Doctor’s gaze grew wide. "And no one thought to call me? When did this happen?" They demanded and Sam swallowed. "The day after your visit." Sam told them and the Doctor slid a look towards Cass. it was clear that they thought that Cass had ordered Sam to not do anything. It wasn’t far from the truth. Cass just didn’t think it was a big deal, especially if the Doctor was going to come back and visit them again. If it had happened again, then Cass probably would have been more insistent. "You’re the one who told them not to come get me, didn’t you?" Cass could tell that Byron, Sir Forsythe, and Sam didn’t like the way that the Doctor spoke to Cass. Cass didn’t actually mind. It was a sign that they were probably a pretty good Doctor since Cass was fairly sure that they spoke to all of their clients the same way. Or, the lower classes got better treatment. Cass liked that, so he didn’t mind the slightly disrespectful tone that they were speaking to him with. It was only disrespectful for this time. Cass didn’t give a fuck about it, personally. Cass shrugged, a slight smile on his lips. "I knew you were going to be by soon, so I wasn’t too worried. If it had happened again, I would have sent Sir Forsythe. We managed." The Doctor stared at Cass, their expression unreadable before they sighed. They closed their eyes, releasing one of Cass’ hands to rub their brow. "I had no idea that the Lord Blackburn was one of the worst types of clients out there." They were clearly upset, and Cass tried his best not to smile in the face of their concern. Sam gasped, but the Doctor continued. "The kind of client that doesn’t call unless something terrible has happened. Did you not have a Doctor in your house growing up? How in the world did I end up with you as a client?" The Doctor complained, and when it felt like Sam was going to explode, Cass started laughing. Everyone looked at him. Byron and Sam were confused, but Sir Forsythe? One of the few people who had followed him from the Blackburn Estate and knew some of the truths, looked very uncomfortable. "Well, Doctor, to be honest with you, no, I didn’t have a Doctor." Cass said, and he was sure his smile had a strange tone to it. He was angry, he was upset, but it wasn’t for himself. It was for the young Lord Blackburn who had suffered. Cass didn’t care about himself. He had just made sure he never got sick. He had always had a resilient body. He assumed it was from eating whatever was available. It was also why being like this was so frustrating. He’d never been halted by his own body before. No wonder Lord Blackburn had been a damn villain. His body didn’t respond to him. The Doctor stared at him in shock. Clearly surprised that one of the heirs to one of the three Dukedoms didn’t have a family Doctor. Cass wasn’t going to elaborate on it, especially not to an outsider. Cass was glad that the Doctor got that after a few moments of silence. "Well, sir, in the future if I am to continue this working relationship with you, you need to call me for minor inconveniences. If you haven’t had a Doctor until now, that makes sense. The state of your body is not good, to put it in simple terms. In more complex terms, your body was teetering on the edge of a cliffside. You are about to plunge over the side, and I fear that your reaction that you had so soon after I gave you medicine is a sign of that." They sighed. "I would have liked to have known about it, and I would have liked to have been here the whole time to monitor your condition, but what is done is done." It was clear that they were pissed with Cass. Sam was trembling beside Cass, also mad because he clearly didn’t like hearing that his Lord had been in danger. "Is that the case? I didn’t realise medicine could do that." Cass said and the Doctor gave Cass a look. "My Lord, I specialise in those the temple can’t or won’t treat. You have fairy blood, and thus you need something a little extra to nurture you. No doubt you have probably felt a little bit better since taking my medicine because I’ve been giving you things that would help nurture not just your spirit, but your body as well. Getting healed at the temple also gives you this, but since you are unable to do so, this is the only other way." Cass was surprised to hear that. So was Byron, who was a dragon, and Sam, who was a human. Sir Forsythe didn’t look as surprised, but Cass felt like he understood why. Sir Forsythe had friends from different walks of life, and he’d watched Cass grow up. He was also the one to get this specific Doctor, so it was clear that he’d had some kind of inkling this whole time. It was only now that he was able to act on it. Cass was kicking himself that he didn’t know this, and he was able to reflect enough on himself to understand that the Doctor was right. He had been feeling better. "So you’re suggesting that my reaction was my body deciding if it was going to go one way or the other?" Cass asked and the Doctor seemed a little relieved that Cass wasn’t getting angry at him, and instead was probing more in a relaxed manner. "Yes, my Lord. It appears it almost swung in the wrong direction. I...I do apologise for that. If I had known it was going to be so dangerous, I would have remained whether you wanted me to or not." Cass laughed at the somewhat genuine apology. He waved one of his unwrapped hands, which was doing much better compared to before. He could now move his fingers, but his grip wasn’t quite back to where it needed to be yet. "It’s alright. I have it on good authority that the gods wouldn’t let me die so easily." Cass said with a knowing smirk, and the Doctor blinked. "Well. Alright. If you say so." They murmured, clearly interested but also clearly not going to ask either. "Well, good news now. Your hands are doing really well. They should be perfectly fine in a few more days. You will probably be able to go with them being unbound except for at night going forward." Cass was excited to hear that. He’d felt a bit like a ghost wandering the halls with his hands wrapped. Or like a mummy. "That is good news considering we have a dungeon raid coming up." Cass said and the Doctor frowned, but kept their opinions to themselves. Cass felt his lips twitch but kept his expression relatively normal. "Right. I am going to continue to recommend you take the supplements I suggested, especially if you are feeling better. I might add some more to your diet since you don’t appear to be having adverse reactions, but I’ll do so after you come back from your dungeon raid. I’ll send you with about 3 weeks worth of supplements, just in case, though I haven’t heard of a time when a dungeon raid took more than 9 days." The Doctor was being overly cautious, which Cass appreciated. Cass, if he remembered correctly, it only took them a matter of days to clear the dungeon since it was relatively easy. The more physical users of the hero party had just mowed through everything while Vespertine and Lord Blackburn had hung back. It had really worked in his favour that the next dungeon really didn’t require him to use his powers much. But three weeks of supplements sounded okay. They didn’t take up too much space either. "Sounds reasonable. We are going to the Capital after, and since I don’t know for how long, that sounds like a good plan." Cass told them and the Doctor nodded. "Perfect. I was also able to source some...things for your other concern." The Doctor said and Cass felt his face heat as he turned to his large bag and pulled out a box. He handed it off to Sam. "I hope that they will be of help. Please do let me know if there is anything else I can do to help in regards to that. Once again, I will suggest that getting another person to help might be the best result. I usually try to go with more natural answers before resulting to aides, but I am not going to force you." The Doctor said. Cass nodded, clearing his throat. The rest of the visit went well, and the Doctor was on their way shortly after. Cass ordered Sam to put that box in his room before anyone else could even guess what was in it. At the very least, his bedroom was still a sacred place. No one went in there besides Cass, Sam and Byron at this point. Cass was making sure that remained that way.
