Before Yue Jinghua could seek out Fa Xiaoyi, someone else came knocking on her door.
When Xie Yu saw Yue Jinghua, he first froze, then immediately put on an uncontrollably angry facade, "Well done, Yue Jinghua, you’ve even dragged this young master into your scheme."
The incident on the pleasure boat truly brought disaster upon Xie Yu.
Not to mention having witnessed such intense, inappropriate acts between men, nearly causing him to develop a permanent squint. Just the fact that Yue Jinghua stole his bed and then used his Dan Xuan Card to take care of those few offensive matters, was already like playing with fire.
That extravagantly flamboyant bed was Xie Yu’s pride, a symbol of recognition amongst the dandies of Polo City. Upon seeing that bed, it was as if they acknowledged Xie Yu’s presence.
Upon investigation by Fa Xiaoyi, the bed was Xie Yu’s, the card was Xie Yu’s, and most infuriatingly, he had always considered Xie Yu a close and trusted friend, never expecting this so-called friend to be Yue Jinghua’s person.
"You caused my Qianbin Building to be sealed off, all the secret lines I laid out were destroyed in one swoop," Xie Yu bemoaned as he beat his chest and stamped his feet.
Even the less competent Prince like Fa Xiaoyi had numerous covert tactics up his sleeve, and this time Xie Yu was like a mute eating bitter herbs, unable to voice his anguish.
"With your abilities, staying in Polo City meant nothing more than muddling along with food and drink. No need to say, it must have been the Assassin Alliance that arranged some secret tasks. Since I inadvertently disrupted your plans, you might as well tell me your true purpose in Polo City. Perhaps I could know some inside information and lend you a hand," Yue Jinghua soothed.
Causing a rift between Xie Yu and Fa Xiaoyi was part of her meticulously planned strategy. Although Xie Yu was verbally complaining, his expression betrayed no real blame towards Yue Jinghua.
"Are you truly clueless, or pretending not to know? I thought, behind you..." Xie Yu hesitated to speak. In fact, not only Fa Xiaoyi, but also Xie Yu believed that behind Yue Jinghua there must be an exceptional expert or even a major family supporting her.
The reason Xie Yu thought so was because of that Lightning Mink.
As is well-known, because of the limited Dark Energy on the continent, Dark Beasts and Dark Practitioners have always been in implacable opposition.
Dark Beasts, especially Mid-High-level Dark Beasts with a certain degree of Spiritual Sense, would not easily submit to Dark Practitioners.
Yet Yue Jinghua’s Lightning Mink was unquestioningly loyal to her.
"Stop hemming and hawing like a delicate woman. Speak your mind if you have something to say," Yue Jinghua gave him a sharp glance.
Her look, tinged with a bit of anger yet carrying a different kind of charm, softened Xie Yu’s heart. He chuckled and said, "Let’s be straightforward, I thought you were a spy for the Dragon War Empire."
"Spy?" Hearing this familiar yet strange term again, Yue Jinghua was somewhat taken aback.
"Yue Jinghua" originated from Longzhan and moreover, her family was once prominent in Longzhan. Even though it has declined now, the possibility that she was still working for Longzhan Country could not be dismissed. Further, according to Xie Yu’s investigations, Yue Jinghua’s brother was a member of the Dragon Rider Camp of Longzhan.
But Yue Jinghua hadn’t considered any of this.
She was also unaware that her momentary surprise had led Xie Yu to mistakenly believe that Yue Jinghua had tacitly accepted his conjecture.
"Do you know why, over the years, a tiny nation like Shang Kingdom has managed to survive intact between two major countries?" Xie Yu asked in return.
"Shang Kingdom, originally called Shang County, is a cluster of city-states, located between the two nations as a buffer zone. Neither the Dragon War Empire nor the Ruison Federation would allow Shang Kingdom to become a vassal state to either nation," Yue Jinghua had read the "Continent History"; Shang County’s stability was only a matter of the last hundred years. In the centuries before, Shang County had repeatedly fallen into the hands of Longzhan and Ruison.
Each side would conquer it only for the other to send a large army to take it back the very next day.
This back and forth resulted in the people of Shang County becoming homeless and countless soldiers from both countries dying or being injured.
This anomaly persisted until a hundred years ago, when a Dark Practitioner from Shang County intervened, navigating between the two great nations with single-handed determination, eventually leading to a truce, and ensuring that Shang County had no more war disturbances for a hundred years.
The Dark Practitioner who saved the people of Shang County and then united several cities to establish Shang Kingdom was Fa Canglian, the several-times great-grandfather of Fa Xiaoyi.
"What does this have to do with you being here?" Yue Jinghua had no interest in heroic sagas, and no matter how formidable Fa Canglian might have been, what could it change now? Nowadays, his great-great-great-grandsons were either useless or mediocre, not one capable of shouldering the responsibility of upholding Shang Kingdom.
