Chapter 9 - 9: A Passionate Encounter

Gladion wandered through the expansive Pokemon ranch behind his family's gym, enjoying the crisp morning air. At five years old, he still marveled at the wonders of this new world, even as he tried to reconcile it with memories of his past life. The sun had barely peeked over the horizon, casting long shadows across the dewy grass. A faint sound caught his attention – a whimper, barely audible over the rustling leaves. Curious, Gladion followed the noise, his small feet padding softly on the ground. As he rounded a large oak tree, he froze. There, huddled against the gnarled roots, was a Machop. Its blue-grey skin glistened with tears, its muscular arms wrapped tightly around its knees. Gladion's heart clenched at the sight. Despite his efforts to maintain the facade of a normal five-year-old, his past-life empathy surged forward. 'What's a machop doing there and why is he even crying?' He thought "Hey there," Gladion said softly, approaching slowly towards the machop "Are you okay?" The Machop's head snapped up, eyes wide with surprise and fear. It scrambled backward, pressing itself against the tree trunk. Gladion held up his hands. "It's alright! I won't hurt you. I just want to help." The Pokémon hesitated, then relaxed slightly. Gladion took this as an invitation and sat down cross-legged a few feet away. "My name's Gladion. What's wrong? Why are you crying?" The Machop tilted its head, considering the small human before it. After a moment, it began to gesture, pantomiming its story. Gladion watched intently, piecing together the tale. "So... you ran away from home?" Gladion guessed. The Machop nodded vigorously. "Because... your family wouldn't train with you?" Another nod, accompanied by a flex of its small muscles. Gladion's brow furrowed. "You want to get stronger, but they won't help?" The Machop's eyes welled up again, and it nodded miserably. 'He looks very young and he wants to train a lot to become stronger. He does not have any fancy type like dragon or psychic. He is just a fighting type too. Now how do I cheer him up?' Gladion thought A spark of recognition flashed in Gladion's mind. This situation... it reminded him of something. Or someone. A character from his past life, from a story he once knew. Someone who embodied determination and the power of hard work. Before he could stop himself, Gladion leaped to his feet, striking a dramatic pose. "YOSH!" he exclaimed, startling the Machop. "The flames of youth burn brightly within you, my muscular friend!" The Machop blinked, bewildered by the sudden change in the boy's demeanor. Gladion, fully committed now, continued his impassioned speech. "To seek strength through tireless effort! To push beyond your limits! This is the springtime of your youth!" He began to pace back and forth, gesticulating wildly. The Machop's head swiveled to follow him, equal parts confused and intrigued. "Listen well, my comrade! In the pursuit of strength, there are no shortcuts!" Gladion paused for dramatic effect, then pointed at the Machop. "But fear not! For I, Maito Gai— I mean, uh, Gladion, shall be your guide on this most youthful journey!" The Machop's expression shifted from bewilderment to amusement. A small smile tugged at its lips. Even though he did not understand the weird human, he somewhat understood their meaning. Encouraged, Gladion ramped up his performance. He dropped to the ground, attempting to do push-ups as he spoke. "We shall train until our muscles scream! We shall run laps until our legs turn to jelly! And then—" he paused, his arms shaking with effort, "—we shall do it all again!" The Machop's smile widened. It mimicked Gladion's pose, effortlessly pumping out push-ups beside the struggling boy. Gladion, realizing he was being outperformed by a Pokémon literally built for physical training, quickly changed tactics. He jumped up, his face red from exertion. "Ah, but true strength comes not just from the body, but from the mind and heart as well!" He struck another pose, this time balancing on one leg. "We must cultivate inner peace! Find balance in all things!" His wobbling intensified. "Like a leaf on the wind, we must be—WHOA!" Gladion toppled over, landing in an ungraceful heap. The Machop burst out laughing, its earlier sadness forgotten. Undeterred, Gladion sprang back up. "You see? Resilience in the face of adversity! That is the key!" The Machop nodded enthusiastically, clearly entertained by the boy's antics. Gladion, caught up in his own excitement, failed to notice his audience expanding. Erza, drawn by the commotion, watched from the porch, a bemused smile on her face as her son pranced about, spouting nonsense about youth and hard work to a wild Machop. "And remember," Gladion continued, oblivious to his mother's presence, "in the face of those who doubt you, who refuse to see your potential, you must shine even brighter! Let the power of youth explode from within you!" He punctuated this statement with a series of rapid punches and kicks, narrowly avoiding tripping over his own feet. The Machop, thoroughly invested now, mimicked his movements with much greater grace. "That's it!" Gladion cheered. "Feel the burning passion in your muscles! In your very soul!" The Machop flexed, its eyes shining with renewed determination. Gladion, breathless but exhilarated, delivered his final declaration. "From this day forward, let us walk the path of strength together! Through rain and shine, through victory and defeat, we shall persevere! For that is our ninja— I mean, our Pokémon way!" He struck one last pose, arms outstretched. "What say you, my youthful friend? Will you join me on this most spectacular journey?" The Machop, caught up in Gladion's infectious enthusiasm, punched the air and let out a cry of agreement. It bounced from foot to foot, eager to begin their training. Gladion beamed, his heart swelling with pride. He'd done it! He'd helped the Machop rediscover its motivation. As the adrenaline faded, however, a creeping sense of embarrassment set in. Had he really just channeled Might Guy in front of a Pokémon? A slow clap from behind made him whirl around. There stood Erza, amusement dancing in her eyes. "Bravo, my little motivational speaker," she said, barely containing her laughter. "I didn't realize we had such a passionate trainer in the family." Gladion's face turned beet red. "M-Mom! How long have you been standing there?" "Oh, long enough to see your, ah, youthful display," Erza replied, her shoulders shaking with suppressed mirth. "I particularly enjoyed the part about your legs turning to jelly. Very poetic." If possible, Gladion's blush deepened. He glanced at the Machop, who looked between mother and son with interest. Erza's expression softened as she took in the scene. "So, care to introduce me to your new friend?" Gladion, grateful for the change of subject, quickly explained the Machop's situation. Erza listened intently, her smile fading to a look of concern. "I see," she said when Gladion finished. "Well, we can't very well send it back if it's unhappy there." She knelt down to the Machop's level. "Would you like to stay here for a while? We have plenty of room, and I'm sure Gladion would love to train with you." The Machop's eyes lit up. It nodded vigorously, then turned to Gladion with an expectant look. Gladion felt a surge of excitement. "Really? It can stay?" At his mother's nod, he pumped his fist in the air. "Alright! Don't worry, Machop, we'll train super hard and get super strong together!" Erza chuckled. "Just try not to overdo it, okay? I don't want to see either of you collapsing from exhaustion." As they walked back to the house, Machop trotting happily beside them, Erza couldn't resist one last tease. "So, Gladion, where did you learn all those interesting phrases? 'Flames of youth' and 'ninja way'... I don't recall teaching you those." Gladion froze for a split second before recovering. "Oh, uh, I think I heard it in a TV show or something. Yeah, that's it!" Erza raised an eyebrow but didn't press further. "Well, it certainly seemed to work. You might have a future as a Pokémon motivational coach." As they entered the house, Gladion's mind raced with possibilities. He had his first Pokémon partner! Well, sort of. And while his Might Guy impression might have been a bit over the top, it had worked. He glanced at the Machop, who grinned back at him, eyes shining with determination. Yes, Gladion thought, this was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. And maybe, just maybe, the start of his journey to becoming the very best, like no one ever was. "Do you want to become stronger? I can teach you become the strongest fighter out there. I would unleash the inner youth inside you!" Gladion said to Machop before taking a pause and then continuing "But you would have to work extra hard for it. You would have to break past your limits countless times. Your body would ache like never before. But at the end of it, You would be stronger than other any other Machop out there."
