Chapter 54 - 54: Second Gym

The massive indoor swimming pool of the Cerulean City Gym provided a unique battleground. Floating platforms dotted the crystal-clear water for footing for Pokemon that were not water types. "Gladion Vortex from Moonwood Town is challenging Gym leader Harrison. Specific regulations apply. Each trainer may use two Pokémon, and only the trainer can initiate Pokémon switches during the battle. Begin!" The Referee called out as both the trainers threw out their first Pokemon. Gladion sent out Zeus who landed on one of the floating platforms while Harrison sent out a Horsea. Looking at Horsea who looked intently at him, Zeus thought with electricity crackling between his fingers. [This water type thinks it can win just because we're on its turf. Let me show me who is boss.] "Zeus, Quick Attack!" Gladion commanded, his voice cutting through the humid air. Zeus jumped from platform to platform in a fast speed as it approached Horsea. "Smokescreen" Harrison called out Horsea initiated with a Smokescreen, filling the area with thick black smoke. Zeus stopped his attack as he could no longer see Horsea. "Go deep, Horsea and then Bubble Beam" Harrison ordered 'This is troublesome. If the bubble beam hits, Zeus would fall in the water and would be at a disadvantage. Agh... Well It looks like I will have to use my psychic powers.' Gladion thought with a wry smile He had decided that he would avoid using his Psychic powers in Pokemon battles as it would give him an unfair advantage and would take the fun out of it. Using telepathy to command Pokemons would confuse the opponents and their Pokemon and would lead to faster moves being executed by his Pokemon. It would give the opposite trainer less time to issue a command too. He can use his psychic sphere of awareness to keep track of Pokemon hiding underground, in water or in a Smokescreen and direct his Pokemon to them. In fact, there was no law stating that one could not use Psychic powers or Aura Powers in a Pokemon battle. It was considered legal as long as you use it on your own Pokemon and not on your opponents Pokemon. But Gladion had decided that he wanted some thrill in the battle. So he was against using his Psychic powers in a Pokemon battle unless he was at a very big disadvantage. Well in this case, Harrison and his Horsea already had a advantage since they were using a battlefield so Gladion justified using his powers with that. 'Just this once.' Gladion reassured himself as he commanded Zeus. "To your left" Gladion said to the surprise of Harrison 'How did the kid know? Wait, are the rumour true then? He is as strong of a Psychic as Sabrina?' Harrison was not just some Rookie trainer who did know how the world worked. He along with others veterans kept tabs on the young generation to see if there was a good seedling that they could nurture for the future of the region. The Horsea launched Bubble Beam from Zeus left who had to leap to dodge it. "Thunder Shock!" Gladion shouted as Zeus fired lightning towards Horsea who escaped into the water once again. "Water Gun, push him into the water!" the gym leader commanded. The pressurized water stream targeted Zeus's platform, threatening to sweep him into the pool - a potentially fatal position for an electric-type. 'Classic water-type strategy,' Gladion thought. 'Isolate and eliminate. But this time, I am ready.' "Thunder!" Gladion said with a smirk as he saw Zeus being pushed into the water by the Water Gun. Zeus had a grin on his face as he heard the command as he used the strongest electric move in his reportaire. The thunder spread throughout the water, even reaching Horsea and shocking him. Horsea immediately fainted, giving the win to Zeus who crackled at seeing the Horsea suffering from his electricity. 'The Lil guy needs to chill. His sadism is clearly showing.' Gladion smiled wryly as he looked at his little thunder maniac. "Horsea is unable to battle! Elekid wins!" the referee announced. Harrison studied Gladion with newfound respect and not just as the grandson of the legendary Maren. "Not bad for a young trainer. Scratch that, You were quite good. I have not seen an Elekid that could use a thunder that strong." Gladion just chuckled at that as he met the gym leader's gaze "I have a request sir." Harrison looked curiously at him "Go ahead, I will see what I can do." Gladion met his gaze evenly. "I'd like to challenge for a 6-star Pokémon battle," he said confidently. A moment of surprise crossed the gym leader's face. "6-star? You're quite bold for a first-time challenger. And you have a 6 star Pokemon already? Well, I am quite curious for what you have in store. So let's just have the battle." Harrison looked at the referee who nodded as he released his Pokemon. A massive Gyarados emerged, its serpentine body filling the arena with an intimidating presence. Water rippled around its massive form, promising destruction. 'A Gyarados, It would be fun.' Gladion thought as he returned Zeus to his Pokeball who was quite shocked at the sheer size of Gyarados. He released Mystique, his Milotic, her elegant form a stark contrast to Gyarados's raw power. Harrison eyes sparkled at seeing such a rare water Pokemon 'A Milotic? Now this would be interesting.' "Gyarados, Tackle!" he commanded. "Aqua Tail!" Gladion responded. Mystique's tail glowed with concentrated water energy, meeting Gyarados's attack head on. The platforms trembled from the impact, water spraying in all directions. But neither Pokemon backed down "Good enough raw power.But let's see how she handles sustained assault. Hydro Pump!" "Mystique, Give them a taste of your Hydro Pump!" Gladion called out Massive jets of water collided in the center of the arena. Gyarados's attack dominated, pushing Mystique back as she crashed on a platform sustaining damage. The gym leader grinned, believing victory was near. "Life Dew!" Gladion said with a smirk Mystique shimmered, her body recovering strength and healing the damage. The gym leader's confident smile faltered. "Interesting" he muttered. "Let's finish this Gyarados, Hyperbeam!" The massive Pokémon charged a devastating energy attack, the air crackling with concentrated power. Gladion's eyes narrowed. 'Mystique is not strong enough to block a hyper beam just yet. Going underwater is an option but she might still suffer some damage. I will have to get creative.' Gladion thought "Surf, then immediate Ice Beam!" he shouted. Mystique summoned a massive wave as she simultaneously prepared her ice attack. As Gyarados's Hyperbeam approached, her Ice Beam transformed the wave into a massive frozen barrier. The attacks collided in a spectacular explosion of ice and energy. Platforms shook, water churned, and the entire gym seemed to hold its breath. "Now, Aqua Tail!" Gladion commanded. Mystique's tail glowed with concentrated water energy, striking the Gyarados who was tired after releasing a hyper beam. The gym leader's desperate "Tackle!" came too late. Gyarados crashed down as it started floating on the water. "Gyarados is unable to battle. Milotic is the winner. Gladion Vortex is the winner of the gym battle." The Referee announced "Remarkable," Harrison said, recalling his Pokémon. He walked up to Gladion to hand him the badge "Congratulations on your victory!" Before Gladion could reply, "Would you mind telling me where did you or your family got the milotics from? My daughters want one so badly. I would have brought my daughters to see your Milotic but I am afraid that they would not let it go after seeing it." Harrison said with almost a pleading tone which made it incredibly hard for Gladion and he almost wanted to tell him the secret of Milotics. Gladion accepted the Cascade Badge first....just in case. "Sorry Sir, It's a trade secret." Gladion replied as Harrison slumped down in defeat. "My daughters would agree to marry you if you just....."
