Chapter 107 - The first week of school

Chapter 107: Chapter 107 - The first week of school I don’t get it. I really don’t. There are some theoretical classes in which we study the very basics of aria weaving and incantations, but that’s all there is to it. When we go to practice, the focus is on leveling up and unlocking skills and casting magic using those skills. Pure and simple. When any student shows curiosity and interest in learning more about actual magic, the teachers quickly dissuade them. Not all teachers, of course. There is one who seems to be eager to teach proper magic, Gilbert. But he is seen as an untrustworthy eccentric by the school board. There is an almost-silent campaign to turn students away from him, spearheaded by the Principal. And it isn’t like he actually knows much, either. He is trying, which is more than can be said about the others, though. The principal is a pious old man called Munderic. He is very uptight and spent almost all of his speaking time in the entrance ceremony glazing over the goddess. I’ve heard that he also helps struggling female students to get better scores in exchange for certain services. As the principal, he has the power to change the score records, of course. Well, I have my first mission in the school laid down to me, then. Collect proof of the Principal’s misdeeds and submit it to the competent authority. The competent authority, in this case, being the court wizard. Lovelace herself. With that, she could appoint someone more interesting to work as Principal. Someone who would be in favor of proper research and teaching of magic. But for that to happen, I need solid proof. The hearsay I get using my deep hearing ability is not something that can be brought in front of a tribunal. Which means I’ll have to wait for the end of the semester, which is when people get desperate for their scores. Maybe even arrange a way to catch him red-handed. It has to be something that utterly destroys that man’s whole career. And then hopefully the next Principal will foment the teaching of proper magic within the school. Because what I got in this first week was utterly risible. People don’t even bother memorizing the arias, because ’the skill do the work for you, so why bother.’ It took me a big dose of effort to stay quiet when I heard that. Even I know better than to stand out in this landscape. The other classes weren’t any more useful. Language classes focused on grammar; math classes aren’t nearly as deep as the ones on Earth. Only exception could have been the history classes, but they covered only stuff that I studied for the written entrance exam. To me, these classes are too much like wasted time. Well, there is the social aspect... which isn’t that much better. As I expected, everyone sucks up to me as soon as they see my uniform. Nobody dared to even contradict a single word I said. We had some sparring matches to gauge everyone’s ability on magic and the sword, and it seems that nobody dared to stand up to me in it as well. And after it, everyone came to compliment me, as if I’d done something impressive or whatever, even though I was holding back as much as I humanly could. It’s no surprise, then, that I’m ending my first week of school life without a single acquaintance. There is a commoner in my class, Ingela. I tried to talk to her twice, but she half-answered and quickly ran away both times. And, because of that, I ended up spending all my free time in the library. This is the bright side of school life. The library at the Royal Academy lives up to its renown. There are even some old dusty tomes on magic theory, which I’m eagerly devouring. Some of them seem to not have been opened for at least a century, or more. It’s hard to determine, because the library has an environmental magic to prevent the deterioration of books. So it might even be a couple centuries since the last time someone opened those books. It seems that the knowledge of magic and its underlying systems was a lot more advanced a millennia ago than it is now. It’s no surprise, given the overreliance on the System for basically anything. I wonder if that overreliance is something that the goddess planned or if it’s an undesired or unexpected side effect. In any case, those books are in the restricted section. I can access it only because I’m the princess of this kingdom, but I’m not allowed to take any book with me to the outside. That’s why I have to spend my time there if I want to study them. After dinner, the library is closed for the day, so I head to my quarters and spend the rest of my time tidying the place and reading some history books. Late at night I do my usual deep hearing to see what secrets I might catch, but I’m always interrupted by some students doing teenager stuff somewhere on the campus. And thus my first week at school finally ended, and I can go back home. ::: "I’m home, mothers!" "Welcome back, Aurea!" "Welcome back! Lily and I have prepared your new room the best we could." "Yes, I really hope you like it!" Lillian and Levinna are at our new house, a mansion that sits inside the royal gardens. It’s a big place, too big for a family of three to live. A complete waste of space and money. They guide me straight to my new room the moment I arrive at the mansion. And the moment they open the door to the room, I can understand why. It’s beautiful! There is a big and comfortable bed and, at its side, a beastkin-style tent. Most walls have bookshelves filled with books of all types, with some spaces dedicated to little statuettes and other ornaments. Other spots on the wall have swords, magical staves, and similar paraphernalia. There is also a really beautiful and colorful statue of a dragon. A door on the other side of the room leads to a closet full of stylish dresses. This is the best room I’ve lived in in both my lives!
