The abandoned warehouse was covered in dust.
Qiao Yuxian had been tied up and fighting inside, with dirt on her clothes, face, and hands.
She looked at the man lying on the ground, unable to move, wiped the dust off her hands, then lowered her head and tugged on Gu Yanjing’s sleeve.
Gu Yanjing looked at her.
The worry beneath his cold and severe expression slowly turned into anger.
Keeping her head down, Qiao Yuxian softly said after a few seconds, "Why are you here? You scared me to death just now."
Gu Yanjing looked at her without speaking.
Qiao Yuxian could sense he was angry, glanced up at him, saw his stern expression, and quickly looked away, pointing at the man on the ground as she complained, "Him. He tried to scare me because he has Feng Chuanbai backing him. Said he wanted to use me as a warning to others."
Though a bit far from the door, Chu Zhengran and Lin Huai Shu could hear her soft voice.
Chu Zhengran’s face showed no emotion.
But Lin Huai Shu looked at the downed people, then at the little girl standing in front of Gu Yanjing, recalling her voice just now.
He couldn’t connect the scene of the people on the ground with her at all.
"It’s a good thing you came. I was really scared to death," Qiao Yuxian’s tone had a lingering sense of fear.
Lin Huai Shu’s mouth twitched.
He thought: who scared whom to death, really.
Gu Yanjing looked at her frightened little expression and coldly called, "Qiao Yuxian."
The sound made Chu Zhengran and Lin Huai Shu jump.
Qiao Yuxian blinked a few times, then slowly raised her head, looking at him with some fear.
Looking at her small expression, Gu Yanjing did not soften at all, asking coldly, "Did you let them bring you here on purpose?"
Qiao Yuxian didn’t speak, silently acknowledging.
"Do you know who they are, what they do? How many of them are there? You just dared to come along." Gu Yanjing’s voice was light and cold, suppressing anger.
Qiao Yuxian pursed her lips and retorted, "I came because I didn’t know."
Gu Yanjing’s eyes trembled with anger, and his hanging hand clenched slightly.
Qiao Yuxian looked at him and added, "I know what I’m doing."
"Knowing what you’re doing means risking your own life?" Gu Yanjing struggled to control his temper.
"But nothing happened, did it?" Qiao Yuxian said softly.
"What if something had? What if there were more of them? What if the people looking for you hadn’t come in time?" Gu Yanjing asked.
"There’s no ’what if,’" Qiao Yuxian retorted again.
"Today’s people were sent by Feng Chuanbai, not the ones who used to follow you. That’s a ’what if,’" Gu Yanjing said.
Qiao Yuxian, whose thoughts were guessed, looked at him.
Gu Yanjing said, "The people who follow you might not want to kill you until you lose your value, but what about others?"
Qiao Yuxian said nothing.
"Today, it was the people looking for you who came. What if it had been Feng Chuanbai’s people? No matter how capable you are, how would you escape from so many people?" Gu Yanjing continued.
Qiao Yuxian frowned slightly, "I said I know what I’m doing."
"That’s not knowing what you’re doing; that’s being reckless," Gu Yanjing said sternly.
A layer of restless cold settled in Qiao Yuxian’s eyes, and her voice dragged with vexation, "This is my own issue; I’ll handle it myself. I have the right to decide how to handle things. You’re so busy; there’s no need to bother with me. Why even worry?"
After speaking, neither of them spoke again.
Everything around seemed to slowly freeze, making it hard to breathe.
Gu Yanjing looked down at her, his eyes brewing a storm.
A few light words, finally condensed into one sentence: I don’t need you to interfere.
Upon hearing her final words, his heart clenched tightly, and then he felt something within him lose control.
The unfamiliar feeling transformed entirely into anger in that moment.
The two stared at each other, neither yielding.
Gu Yanjing looked at her agitated, stubborn, defiant, and irritating demeanor.
A few seconds later, he pulled her arm, drawing her to his side, and raised his hand to smack her on the butt.
Neither too hard nor too light, it was much like a parent who was truly exasperated and had no choice but to give their child a smack.
Qiao Yuxian’s eyes widened instantly, leaning against Gu Yanjing’s arm in surprise for a second, then immediately covered the spot with one hand, jumped back a few steps, both angry and embarrassed, glaring at him.
Chu Zhengran and Lin Huai Shu at the door were also stunned by the scene.
They had only seen Mr. Gu furious enough to want to take lives.
They had never seen him so angry that his chest heaved, yet all he could do was give a scare-like tap.
"What are you doing!" Qiao Yuxian’s ears instantly turned red, the blush spreading to her collar. Her face also turned red.
When her face turned red, any ferocity lost its intimidating power.
Gu Yanjing took a few steps forward, standing in front of her, cradling her chin with his thumb, pinching her cheek, his voice extremely cold, "Next time you talk nonsense, I will..."
He hadn’t finished speaking when a "Damn!" from Lin Huai Shu at the door interrupted him.
Gu Yanjing frowned and looked towards the door.
The warehouse had been abandoned for a long time, dirty and messy, with weeds growing everywhere.
Suddenly, dirt fell from above the doorway, landing right on Lin Huai Shu’s shoulder, covering him in dirt.
The focused Lin Huai Shu was startled.
And hearing the sound, Qiao Yuxian remembered there were still people standing at the door. Her first reaction was to quickly shove Gu Yanjing’s hand aside, covering her face with both hands, burying her face into Gu Yanjing’s body.
Feeling her collide with him, Gu Yanjing looked down, noticing her little red ears.
Most of his anger dissipated.
...
Su Qi and Shang Chen stayed behind with men to handle the people at the scene.
Gu Yanjing and Qiao Yuxian left first.
On the way out, Shang Chen said, "I told you there’s no need to rush, she’s pretty tough, nothing’s going to happen to her just like that."
Su Qi looked at the people who couldn’t walk without help, took a deep breath.
"Look, Liu Zhou didn’t even come," Shang Chen said.
Su Qi said nothing.
They had contacted Liu Zhou.
Liu Zhou was initially worried, but after hearing she was taken by a scalping gang, he instantly relaxed, even slowing his speech.
He had this attitude like Qiao Yuxian could handle anything.
...
Over here, Chu Zhengran was driving, Lin Huai Shu was in the passenger seat brushing dirt off himself.
Gu Yanjing and Qiao Yuxian sat in the back.
The redness on Qiao Yuxian’s face faded a bit but was still there since she hadn’t spoken since getting in the car.
Gu Yanjing took a wet wipe from the car to clean the dust from her face.
Qiao Yuxian stayed silent, obedient yet somewhat angrily waiting for him to finish.
After a quiet moment, she said, "Why isn’t there a partition in the car?"
Gu Yanjing’s face still wasn’t great, and he glanced at her.
Qiao Yuxian pursed her lips, looking a bit pitiful, "I’m so embarrassed."
Chu Zhengran glanced back through the rearview mirror. Lin Huai Shu, while wiping his clothes, had his ears tuned to the back seat.
"Endure it," Gu Yanjing finished wiping her face, then wiped her hands.
Qiao Yuxian huffed angrily, taking a deep breath, "That’s because of you."
"Isn’t it because you were talking nonsense?" Gu Yanjing asked coldly.
Qiao Yuxian’s shoulders drooped in defeat, and she stopped talking, sitting awkwardly.
Alright.
What she said was over the line.
