Chapter 127: Blackmail Genevieve finished her glass and poured herself another. She drank slowly this time. As she drank, Jamal raised his hand and signed. Genevieve’s brow pulled together as she watched him. "What are you doing?" She asked, and he smiled. "Our class just started. That’s how you say I’m sorry in sign language," he said, doing it again. Genevieve watched him closely and she tried to copy his movement. She smiled when she finally got it. "What about ’thank you’?" She asked and Jamal taught her that as well. "How do you sign ’please’?" Genevieve asked, and Jamal showed her, teaching her the basic signs she needed to know. Genevieve laughed at the ridiculousness of some of the signs, and when she missed some she laughed, and Jamal smiled as he watched her, thinking that she wasn’t so bad. "Abigail told me you were in need of a secretary who could sign," Jamal said after a while. "Yeah. Do you want to recommend someone?" Genevieve asked easily. "If you don’t mind, I can double as your secretary and driver until you find someone else," Jamal offered. Genevieve’s brows pulled together, "Why would you want to do that?" "I’d have applied for the position of secretary, but I don’t have a place to stay. And since the accommodation is only available to your driver, I’d like to maintain the job," he explained. "Hmm," Genevieve considered it for a moment, "do you have the qualifications? And do you really think it’s something you can do? It’s going to be demanding." "I don’t mind. I get to drive you to the office in the morning and drive you back. It saves me cost of accommodation, feeding and transportation. The only challenge might be driving you during work hours because I might not be able to leave the office," he said, watching her. While discussing with Harry and Tom after Tom had made the call to his friend, they had agreed that maybe becoming the secretary would help him better arrange a meeting between Abigail, Tom and Lucy. Genevieve narrowed her eyes as she thought about it. "I can always drive myself. It’s not exactly a big deal. And Abigail can drive as well," she said thoughtfully. "But my Dad..." "I spoke with him yesterday," Jamal cut in, and Genevieve raised a brow. "You did? About the job?" She asked, and Jamal nodded. "It sort of came up during our conversation. He plans to get a secretary that can monitor you at the office," Jamal said, and Genevieve sighed. "I’m okay with you working as our driver and secretary. I’ll speak with Abigail, and if she’s okay with it too, then we’d talk to him and get you onboard," she said, and Jamal gave her a polite nod. "Thank you very much. I promise you won’t regret this," he said, and she waved it off. "I’d have to look through your file to make sure you’re qualified and you know what the job entails. Maybe Abigail and I would interview you," she said, and Jamal nodded. "That’s fine. I don’t mind," Jamal said, and Genevieve sighed as she picked up her phone. Jamal watched as she unlocked it with a G pattern and then she checked something on it before pushing back from the table. "Excuse me. I need to use the ladies’ and then we can leave. I’m feeling much better now," she said as she rose. Jamal gave her a nod and watched as she walked away, leaving her phone and purse behind. Just as she disappeared from view, her phone buzzed with a phone call, and even though Jamal watched to ignore it at first, his gaze fell on the screen and his brow arched when he saw the caller ID. Bitch. Bitch? Whose contact was that? A friend she fell out with? Jamal mused watching the phone. Soon the call disconnected and a multimedia text came in from the same Bitch. Jamal looked in the direction Genevieve had gone and then picked up her phone. He knew that whoever Ryan had asked to keep an eye on Genevieve would see him doing this and he didn’t mind since he was supposed to be spying on Genevieve for Ryan. He unlocked the phone with the G pattern and quickly checked the message. [Take my call you little slut! If you don’t send the money I’m going to release these pictures.] Jamal froze when he clicked on the pictures and saw a picture of Genevieve when she was a little less than six, standing naked next to two naked men. Before Jamal could process what he was seeing, he sighted Genevieve returning and he immediately exited the text and repositioned her phone as she had left it. "Someone called and I think you might have received a text too," he told her as she returned to her seat. She raised a brow as she picked it up to see who had called. Genevieve’s brow pulled together as she wondered why there was no text notification on the screen. Jamal pretended to be busy on his phone while he positioned his camera in a way that he could watch her through his phone’s screen. He noticed how her face paled slightly, and then she let out a deep breath. Genevieve put her head down on her arms and closed her eyes. Jamal thought maybe she was crying, and watched her for a moment, making sure she was okay. When Genevieve stirred and lifted her head, her eyes looked tired but a little clearer as she waved to the waitress and paid for the wine, leaving a tip on the table. "We can go now," she said softly as she rose and Jamal got to his feet immediately. Neither of them said a word as they walked out of the lounge and back to the car. Once they got into the car, Genevieve pressed her forehead against the cool glass and closed her eyes, willing herself to not dwell on the text. It wouldn’t be the first, and it sure as hell won’t be the last, she told herself. Instead of thinking of the text, she thought of Stefan. She felt the light kiss he had given her, and in her mind, she saw his smile as he said he had crossed the line. Would he remain on the other side he had crossed to? Or would he want to leave the line standing between them? She sighed softly as she thought about her conversation with Jamal in the lounge and what Jamal had said about Stefan believing in her. The thought that somewhere out there, someone like Stefan believed in her made her feel warm all over and it sort of made her hopeful that maybe she could believe in herself too. She smiled when she caught Jamal’s concerned gaze in the mirror, "You’re not going to tell Jamal that I cried, right?" "I won’t," he said, and she nodded. When Jamal pulled up in front of the house, Genevieve stepped out slowly. "Thank you for today, Pete," she said quietly, looking up at him as he stood in front of the car. "You’re welcome, ma’am," he said with a small smile. "If you ever need to talk... or just sit quietly... I’m here." Genevieve’s eyes filled with tears, but she nodded and walked slowly into the house, carrying the memory of Stefan’s kindness — and Jamal’s quiet support — in her heart. Jamal stood by the car, his heart heavy as he watched her go. What had a kid like her been doing naked with not one but two male adults? And who was the person blackmailing her? He didn’t want to imagine what the picture meant.
