Chapter 173: Gas weapons

Words : 1512 Updated : Sep 29th, 2025
As soon as he heard the dinosaur with the sail roar again, Davies knew that something new was on the way. He was not alone: many of the officers on the ground shivered and trembled at the thought of a new threat. Threat that appeared on their flanks shortly after. Five legions of dinosaurs appeared out of nowhere surrounding them on all sides. While the main legion dominated the eastern side, the other five smaller ones lined up on the northern, southern and western side, cutting off any escape routes. "What... what's going on?" Davies yelled. "They can't possibly have done the rounds! Even hiding behind the dunes we should have seen them... and in any case they wouldn't have had time to move so quickly!" Davies was not wrong: the dinosaurs would never have been able to circle the entire army in such a short time. The truth was that Sobek had premeditated everything from the start! Sobek had handed over command of the five secondary legions to Carnopo, while he and Buck would manage the assault legion. However, Carnopo had not left Cartago with them that morning, but he had left the night before; protected by [Ambush], he and his legions had marched all night and surrounded the human encampment, positioning themselves at the predetermined points. After reaching the five points where they should have waited, they hid in the mines, where they could remain hidden even without using [Ambush], and they slept and rested until the next day. They then waited for the signal, and when they heard Sobek's first roar they moved, still hidden from [Ambush], and positioned themselves on the dunes surrounding the human army. After that they had only waited. The task of Carnopo and his legions was very important: they had to prevent the enemy from escaping. As soon as they heard Sobek's fourth roar, they deactivated [Ambush] and fired on the humans, restraining their retreat and trapping them in a deadly grip. The five secondary legions had only two guns each, but they were more than enough to keep humans at bay who no longer had any vehicles to rely on. And if any lucky ones managed to get past the cannon cover, they were quickly replaced by [Devastating roar]. Trapped in crossfire from all sides, the human army had lost forty thousand men just fifteen minutes into the battle. They were almost half of the original army. "It's time to finish it here!" Sobek roared, and nodded to Buck. The tyrannosaurus understood immediately and gave the charge order. Even though he could have simply waited for the guns to do their job, Sobek didn't want to wait. There was always the possibility that humans would regroup in some way, so better hit them now while they were in disarray. Besides, he didn't want to waste too many bullets: the [Weapon system] wasn't cheap. The assault legion charged like a tsunami, quickly closing the distance between the two armies. Seeing them arrive, the humans attempted to build a defense, but the pterosaurs flew up again and rushed towards the enemy, unleashing [Devastating roar] again and breaking the lines completely. When the charge of the ceratopsids protected by their armor arrived, added to the giant predators that followed them and all the other dinosaurs that came behind them, it pierced the human army like a river in flood. The power of the charge was such that the dinosaurs almost reached the center of the human army before the mountain of corpses in front of them forced them to stop. Within seconds, the dinosaurs had claimed another twenty thousand victims. At the same time, the secondary legions led by Carnopo increased fire on the rear of the army, while the pterosaurs continued to attack from above, stunning and killing humans with [Devastating roar]. Twenty minutes after the battle began, the death toll among humans had reached seventy-five thousand; only a few remnants of the army still remained standing. In contrast, the dinosaurs still hadn't suffered a single loss. It was now only a matter of minutes before the human army was completely annihilated. Davies could not help but watch the story helplessly from the top of the mountain where he was. He had expected a total victory, but instead the situation was resolved with a massacre. He, the general of the army, watched thousands of his soldiers die every second without being able to think of a way to help him. However, he was unwilling to give up. If that battle was going to end in ruinous defeat, then he at least wanted as many of those damned dinosaurs to go to the grave. "Load the cannon!" he ordered the few men who were with him. The men who were on the battlefield had no chance of escaping either way: they were completely trapped by the dinosaurs and would be torn apart shortly. Deavis knew he was condemning them to an atrocious death, but he couldn't do otherwise. "FIRE!" The cannon fired and the sphere filled with nerve gas was launched towards the center of the battlefield. As soon as the ball crashed on the ground, the deadly colorless and odorless gas began to spread like wildfire. Sobek didn't notice it immediately. It was only when he saw some of the smaller dinosaurs fall to the ground that he began to understand the situation, and for a moment he panicked. When he saw more glass balls falling from the sky he fully understood what was happening. "They already have gas weapons!?" he thought out of breath, but there was no time to ask questions: many small dinosaurs were already showing signs of malaise. The gas was still low, but it was rising rapidly and its effects were evident. He had to hurry or they would all die of suffocation. He immediately accessed all [Contracts] and changed one of the shared abilities with [Apnea], after which he screamed and used [Devastating roar] to make himself heard across the battlefield: "Hold your breath! There is a deadly vapor in the air. Don't breathe or you will die! I gave you the ability to be able to stay without breathing for a very long time. Retire to the top of the dunes, and let no one breathe!" The dinosaurs promptly obeyed and held their breath, then ran off the battlefield and climbed onto the dunes. Like many poisons, nerve gas accumulated in the hollows, so it was best to climb high. Thanks to Sobek's prompt intervention, the dinosaurs escaped the danger of poison gas. However, humans did not have the [Apnea] ability or even gas masks (they were certainly not equipped to survive a gas in a world where gas weapons didn't yet exist!); the few remnants of the army quickly perished as soon as they inhaled the gas. However, despite the victory, Sobek was able to notice that some dinosaurs had fallen victim to the nerve gas. There were few, not even a few dozen, but there had been victims anyway. Which made him get angry. Angry as he never was before. He was responsible for every dinosaur in his pack, every loss to him was as valuable as if he had lost a brother. He stared hard at the mountain from where he had seen the glass balls raining and roared: "BRING HIM TO ME! DRAG THAT BASTARD HERE TO ME!". His eyes seemed full of flames: "AND I WANT HIM ALIVE!" The dinosaurs set off like trains in the direction of the mountain; Sobek wasn't the only one who was furious. They wanted to take whoever threw the gas weapons and tear them apart until they were eradicated from the world. On the mountain, Davies was hurrying to leave. He and his personal guards were getting into a jeep and leaving the territory in a hurry. "Sir, what about the cannon?" one of the guards asked. "Fuck the cannon! You have seen it, it is useless! It doesn't hurt them!" Davies yelled out loud. Although he was used to keeping his nerve, now he was starting to break down: nothing seemed to work against the dinosaurs. Even the gas weapons had failed! They had to get out of there right away and hope to be able to outpace the enemies. But they couldn't get very far. While they were still descending from the peak, a flock of pterosaurs was upon them. The guards tried to shoot him, but their meager weapons could not penetrate [Reinforced skin]. Within seconds a group of quetzalcoatlus, hatzegopteryx, pteranodons and several other flying reptiles capsized the jeep, holding back the escape. Davies and his guards crept out of the wrecked craft and tried to do battle, but soon found that their ammunition was useless. As soon as they finished their shots, the giant pterosaurs grabbed them with their claws and dragged them away in flight, carrying them towards the dinosaur army.
