Chapter 172: The first battle starts

Words : 1362 Updated : Sep 29th, 2025
The dinosaurs slowly advanced to the top of the dune and grouped into rows. What presumably was their leader, a giant dinosaur with a sail, stood on top of the dune watching the enemy army, while a t-rex was coordinating the disposition of the troops. Davies was surprised at how organized they were. "A legion?" he thought he amazed. The ranks of the dinosaurs were perfectly ordered and exhibited impeccable military discipline. It was surprising. If they were already that skilled, how long would it take to become a real threat? For a while the two armies did not move. Both sides had no intention of advancing first. The big dinosaur with the sail carefully observed the battlefield, while Davies tried to understand what his intent was. Davies eventually chose to take the initiative. "To all air units, attack them from above and force them to advance!" he ordered. The helicopters didn't have very powerful weapons, but they were still equipped with machine guns. They would have made many victims. But just as the helicopters began to advance, the large dinosaur with the sail lifted its head to the sky and roared. Davies marveled at the power of the roar: despite being nearly four kilometers away, he could hear it clearly. What happened next had something inexplicable: thousands of gigantic winged figures appeared out of nowhere from the sky and fell upon the helicopters. ********* "Attack!" Apache roared, diving into the nearest helicopter. As soon as they heard Sobek's signal, all the flying reptiles had disabled [Ambush]; after which they launched an assault on human flying vehicles following their commander. Sobek was no fool. He knew that if he wanted to win, he had to eliminate air support first. Being bombed from the air was something the ground troops could do nothing against: the helicopters had to be out of the way first. Odaria's army had only 150 military helicopters, a tiny number; by contrast, Sobek had thousands of pterosaurs, many of them much larger than a helicopter. And the helicopters were not made to protect themselves from what came from above. The pterosaurs fell on them like rain and split the propellers; within seconds, the helicopters crashed to the ground, some even on the human army itself. With the anti-aircraft out of the way, it was time for phase two. Sobek let out a second roar and the pterosaurs figured out exactly what they had to do. They then swooped into the army and opened their mouths wide, unleashing the force of [Devastating roar] on humans. Thousands of soldiers lost the use of hearing and their brains were also damaged; but this was not the goal of the pterosaurs. The winged reptiles lashed out at the tanks and knocked them over with [Devastating roar]. The huge vehicles were not designed to defend against a sonic wave air attack. The same was true for the other weapons of the army: none of them were prepared to hit a giant pterosaur that swooped down, hit and then returned to the sky. They didn't even have time to take aim. The few weapons that managed to hit the flying reptiles were those that were small and easy to reload, but their bullets were useless against [Reinforced skin]. As soon as all the tanks and most of the military vehicles were knocked out, the pterosaurs turned and retreated, flying towards the dinosaur army. At that point Sobek let out his third roar. Until then, only a small part of the legion had shown up; most of them remained behind the dune, hidden by [Ambush]. Now, however, it was time to show himself. The ceratopsids covered in their mighty armor stepped forward and took the front line, ready to charge; but above all, the sauropods climbed the dune. Each sauropod carried a giant cannon on its back, and some dromeosaurs helped reload it. At a nod from Sobek, they opened fire. Odaria's tanks were older models, whose guns could only reach 1.8-2 kilometers in range, comparable to the ancient Mark I on Earth. But the [Weapon system] provided Sobek with only the best of the best: the cannons that the dinosaurs had could even reach 30 kilometers of range. So while the dinosaurs were out of the range of the human tanks, the humans were within the range of the dinosaurs! A hail of bullets fell on Odaria's army. Within minutes, the front lines were completely annihilated. Within ten minutes, the number of victims already amounted to ten thousand, more than a tenth of the army. Davies was unable to think. From the top of his headquarters he could clearly see what was happening, but he didn't know what to do. He didn't expect dinosaurs to have weapons! In addition, such sophisticated weapons! How was this possible? Where did they get them? "General!" one of the soldiers from his guard yelled. "The officers are on the radio! They ask for orders!" Davies recovered and grabbed the communicator: "Let's withdraw! With those guns we can't defeat them in the open. We need to reorganize and change tactics!" But Sobek had already foreseen a retreat of the human army, and he was unwilling to let them do it. He had no intention of waging a war of attrition and trenches. It had to end in one day, with a single, swift battle. As soon as he saw that the human army began to reverse, he let out his fourth roar. That was the signal for Carnopo. =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= AUTHOR'S THOUGHTS HI! After several chapters, we are finally starting to get into the interesting part of the story. By now humanity is discovering the existence of intelligent dinosaurs and soon Sobek will have to confront the most dangerous and powerful species that has ever appeared on the planet. What will really be his plan? We'll find out... but in the meantime, let's make some clarifications! 1) General Davies is another character from the TV series 'Zoo'. Obviously, he's one of the villains, as well as arguably one of the more bastard characters in the series (although many of his actions are understandable). In the 'Zoo' series he is the main originator and advocate of a plan to wipe every single animal off the face of the planet, since he believes that otherwise humanity will go extinct. In my story he doesn't have an important role like in the series (since he is the general of a small third world country, not a superpower like the United States), but still he maintains the same mentality. 2) The fans of 'Peaky blinders' will surely have recognized many of the rich people presented during the meeting of Odaria's heads of families (chapter 168). Yes, they are all 'bad guys' who appeared in this series. To specify: Billy Kimber was an English gangster and head of the Birmingham Boys and thus the main enemy of Thomas Shelby and the Peaky Blinders, Oswald Mosley is the deputy to the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Cabinet adviser to the Prime Minister of Great Britain and the main antagonist of season 5, and Jimmy McCavern was the leader of the Billy Boys and serves as one of two secondary antagonists, alongside Michael Gray, of Series 5 of Peaky Blinders. 3) Sobek's ultimatum to humans (chapter 162) is highly inspired by the warning that the chimpanzee Caesar gives to humans in the movie 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes'. 4) Kemp, who leads the defense of the city (chapter 165), is also a character from the movie 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes'. 5) Odaria's military salute 'Ad victoriam' (chapter 165) is a reference to the video game series 'Fallout': 'Ad Victoriam', in fact, is a Brotherhood of Steel main quest. 6) As Sobek himself admits, 'So it begins' is a reference to 'The Lord of the Rings'. Precisely, this is what King Théoden says at the beginning of the battle of Helm's Deep in the film 'The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers'.
