Chapter 290: Urgent Retreat
Needless to say, it wasn’t as though I had forgotten about Ryoko and Cassie trying to hunt me. However, that dragon-dog duo from another world...
Just when did they obtain this kind of influence?
’I guess because she’s a dragon, but still... World leaders...?’
Not only that, but judging from the way all of the articles were describing it, it appeared there were already multiple governments chiming in to proclaim their support.
"What a pain..."
Was it simply because they wanted accountability for the one who killed the most famous Challenger in the world? Or did they also wish to curry favour with that so-called "Dragon Maiden"?
’Probably both. Anyway, if they’re doing something like this, I shouldn’t stay here for too long.’
It really was a lifesaver that I had the Library as a safe haven.
Truthfully, I thought about using the Demon King’s warning as an excuse to visit home since it’s been so long, but...
’I don’t think I can take that risk anymore.’
I held no doubts that Ryoko was tracking me somehow, likely through magic; that was probably how she managed to create a portal leading to Earth in the first place. If I stayed on Earth for too long, I’m sure it wouldn’t be long until she turned up out of nowhere.
’Right... I did leave behind a whole lot of blood when I killed their Master.’
If that’s how they found me, I could only be more careful to not make the same mistake next time.
Although, it’s not like there was much I could do to prevent that either way.
"...Wait."
Just then, it occurred to me.
Blood?
’Back then was before I had any kind of magic or divine energy in my blood. Could it still have been possible to locate me even without that...?’
If that was the case, then, now that my blood did contain magic energy...
"..."
...Wouldn’t it just have become even easier to locate me?
"――Eeeek...!!"
At that moment, as if waiting for me to come to the conclusion the entire time, a commotion around me.
Snapping my head in the same direction that panic was directed to, my gaze pierced the window I was sitting by, landing on the town square at the very centre of the commercial district.
At that spot was a large fountain water feature, but just in front of it―
’Right now...?!’
―The size of a small shed, a violet, swirling portal of magic.
Thud-!
Without hesitation, I jumped from my seat and sprinted to the bathrooms with no regard to any of the customers around me. Besides, they were probably too taken aback by the outside event to even notice.
Rushing into a stall and slamming the door shut, I was immediately transported to the Library.
"What the hell was that?!"
Of course, the question was rhetorical. I knew exactly what it was.
In fact, if I had waited just a moment longer, I was certain I was about to witness a dragon or dog girl pop right out and start shouting my name, or more likely both.
"Wait, shit... I forgot they even knew my name... If they start screaming it recklessly and make people aware, then they’ll naturally know it’s me...!"
On one hand, I at least somewhat trusted the Villain’s Vizard to maintain the separation in people’s minds between ’Enki Valentine’ and the Demon King persona they all knew.
However, if those two continued to spread the knowledge that the Demon King’s name was also Enki, then it’s only the obvious conclusion that I would be suspected. They already did it when they first came to Earth, after all.
It’s not exactly like my name was a common one, so it would be more likely to stick around in people’s minds, too.
"Damn it... Librarian, is there anything I can do?"
Facing her, she also seemed a little concerned, though that was probably more to do with the state I was currently in than the situation itself.
"Uhmmm...."
Bringing a finger to her chin, she tilted her head and hummed in thought.
"Fret not! A Demon King is cool!"
Only to come out with that.
’Forget it.’
Sighing, I took a seat opposite her desk and rested my head in my arms.
I was like that for a while, before suddenly, an even worse possibility popped into my head.
’...If they still have my blood, couldn’t they test it against their system to find my real identity?’
When I was a normal person, of course, my blood would have been medically taken at some point, as well as other forms of DNA sampling.
Although it seemed a bit out of the question for there to exist a database with every single individual citizens’ blood or DNA simply due to the absurd cost of storage requirements, it was definitely possible that, if those girls were really working with a bunch of world governments, they could compare it to find a match.
Really. If I had a criminal record, I’d be royally screwed.
’Well, whatever. They shouldn’t be able to do it as things stand; that’s probably why they called me the ’Demon King’ instead of by my name.’
The main concern was how those around me would be affected, but... again, I think the safest option was to simply not interact with anyone.
"Unless, maybe I could kill those two..."
If Ryoko and Cassie were to die, it wouldn’t guarantee anything, but it would prevent them from spreading the connection between me and the Demon King. It would also mean they couldn’t hunt me down anymore, of course.
That was only under the assumption that I could actually accomplish it, though.
’The dragon on the Thirty-Fourth Floor was way out of my league, but her... I’m pretty sure she was only young even when I visited her world, so it could be more doable than I thought...’
But, at the end of the day, she was still a dragon, and an enraged one at that.
There wasn’t much to say about her partner, Cassie, but dragons were an entirely different story.
In the end, I didn’t think it was something I needed to take care of so urgently, and thanks to that, I could take my time to prepare.
"Librarian, any Contracts for me?"
――John Pierce was dead. Still, I needed to get stronger.
I felt bad for just leaving Iva like that, but I had no choice. I was sure we would have another opportunity to chat sometime, but it is what it is.
In any case, from now on, I wouldn’t rule out 4-star Contracts. 5-star was still a strong no-go, even if they were freely available thanks to my promotion.
"Don’t bother with 1-star, only give 2-star if you think it’ll be quick and worth a lot of World Stability, and focus on efficient 3- and 4-star Contracts."
"Roger~!"
Leaving her to sort that out, in the meantime, I had an important decision to make.
Antagonist Protection Service Specialised Authority & Assistance Menu
Status | Shop | Storage | Summoning
Opening the Assistance Menu, I paused. Before I realised it, I found my gaze lingering on the fourth option, Summoning.
"..."
Demon Lords, Dark Wizards, Emperors, Witch Queens... There were a lot of strong entities I had access to, beings perhaps stronger than anything else in their respective worlds.
If I used this, it might be possible to even kill a dragon as I am right now.
’...No.’
Shaking my head, I continued to the Shop section.
Killing Ryoko was not something that would net me any tangible gain. All I would be doing is wasting precious World Stability on a temporary, one-time thing.
I was never one for purchasing consumables in games, anyway. It felt like a waste.
There was no doubt in my mind that the time would come for Villain Summoning... But that time wasn’t now.
So then―
