She narrowed her eyes, and after a moment, her brows arched in surprise. "Ethan," she said softly, tugging at his sleeve, "did you just see that?" Ethan blinked and nodded, his jaw tightening as he followed her gaze. "Yeah... I did. And I can’t believe my eyes." Everlyn, normally the very image of unshakable nobility, looked... angry. Her pristine, expressionless face—the one she carried like a porcelain mask—was cracking. There was tension in her brows, a flush to her cheeks, and her lips were pressed in a way that said she was barely holding herself together. "I can’t believe it," Seraphina whispered. "Big Sis Eve... she’s actually showing it. Not just feeling something, but showing it." "She never even looked like that when Father scolded her," Ethan muttered, baffled. "Not even when she was fighting in the dueling arena. I thought she couldn’t show emotion, like it was locked away." Seraphina nodded slowly, her eyes reflecting awe. What we couldn’t manage in years... how the hell did he—?" "I wonder that too," Seraphina murmured with a small, almost wistful smile. "There’s something about him... something different." Ethan turned to her slowly, brow twitching. "Not you too, Sera." Her cheeks flushed as she stammered, "I—I was just making observations! Nothing else!" "Yeah, right," he muttered, eyes narrowing. Back on the dance floor, Everlyn’s steps remained steady, her expression more composed now, but something simmered beneath the surface. Her fingers gently tightened around Alex’s hand as they moved in perfect rhythm, her golden eyes flicking up to meet his deep blue ones. Then she spoke softly, her voice almost lost in the music. "Tell me the truth... Are you from this world?" Alex’s heart skipped a beat. A bead of sweat rolled down the back of his neck. He kept his expression neutral, but inside, alarms blared like sirens. ’What the hell kind of question is that?! Did she notice something? Did I slip?’ He forced a chuckle, his voice light. "What are you talking about, Miss Everlyn? That’s... a strange question to ask in the middle of a dance." Her gaze lingered on him for a moment longer before she looked away. "Nothing. Forget it." Alex’s mind raced. ’No. That wasn’t random. She knows something... or suspects.’ Testing the waters, he tilted his head slightly and said casually, "Are you saying... there are other planes of existence? Other realms beyond this one?" Everlyn’s eyes met his again, this time with a spark of curiosity dancing in the gold. "Why not?" she said. "There are gods, aren’t there? If they can exist, why can’t there be higher planes?" Alex smiled faintly. "Well... you’re right about that." He narrowed his eyes slightly, the dim golden light of the ballroom reflecting in their depths. He leaned in just a little, his voice low and edged with curiosity. "Then allow me to change the question." Everlyn tilted her head ever so slightly, intrigued by his sudden shift in tone. "Are you from a higher plane?" For a moment, there was silence between them as the music faded into the background of their awareness. Then, a rare and breathtaking smile bloomed across Everlyn’s face—soft, genuine, and radiant, like dawn breaking through a winter sky. Alex felt his breath catch. ’That smile... it’s unreal.’ "Who knows," Everlyn replied, her voice almost playful. "Maybe I am... maybe I’m not." Alex’s eyes didn’t move from her face, still caught in the spell of that elusive expression. The words left his mouth before his brain caught up. "Beautiful." Everlyn’s breath hitched audibly. A soft pink hue blossomed across her pale cheeks, and her steps faltered slightly in the dance. Then her golden eyes narrowed sharply. With no warning, she brought her heel up and gently pressed it against his foot—not hard, but enough to make a point. "Stop flirting with me like you do with other girls," she said, her voice sharp and tinged with warning. "Or I will kick your ass." Alex winced dramatically. "Ow—okay, okay! Calm down, Princess Heel-Stabber." Then, smirking through the discomfort, he added, "Then why are you blushing?" The blush on Everlyn’s face deepened instantly. A flicker of panic crossed her features before she stomped her foot harder on his. "Shut up," she muttered, looking away, clearly flustered. Alex chuckled through the pain. "Alright, alright." She finally removed her heel from his foot, shaking her head lightly to clear her thoughts. But just as she was settling back into the rhythm of the dance, a voice chimed in her head—this time more urgent than before. |< Eve. Switch with me. Now. >| Everlyn blinked. ’Aurora? At least warn me before hijacking my body like this!’ But her inner voice was drowned out as her consciousness began to fade into the background. Alex, still recovering from the heel attack, suddenly felt a surge of power ripple through the air like static. He blinked rapidly as the temperature seemed to drop by a few degrees. ’What... the hell is this? That aura—it’s not mana. It feels divine.’ He took a cautious step back, instinctively preparing to use Shadow Step if needed. But then Everlyn—no, someone else wearing Everlyn’s body—looked at him. Her golden eyes glowed faintly now, laced with an energy that felt both divine and alien. "Hah... it’s been too long since I’ve been in the mortal world," she said with a lazy stretch of her arms, as if just waking up from a long nap. "Reminds me of the good old days. The sky’s still beautiful, and the people are entertaining." Alex’s brows shot up. ’Okay, what happened just now?’ The woman—Everlyn—turned her gaze toward him with a mischievous grin. Her posture was different, her confidence radiating like a seasoned predator who knew the world owed her nothing... but dared it to try anyway.
