Her chest still rose and fell unevenly from how quickly she had run—not from danger, but from what she had seen. She leaned her back against a tree, her eyes locked somewhere between the stars and her memories. She had thought the rumors were nonsense. Whispers that floated among the elders about Hei Long and the Sect Leader? Please. She’d only joked about joining his harem because it was amusing. Because she thought she was safe from ever needing something like that. But she wasn’t. And what she saw... Mu Qianxue closed her eyes and swallowed, hard. "So it’s true," she whispered to herself, voice barely audible against the rustling of the leaves: "I was joking. I didn’t think..." There was a tightness in her chest that wouldn’t go away. A twisting feeling she hadn’t felt in decades. Not since she was a girl—a foolish one, full of dreams about a husband, a home, maybe even children. But time passed. Life became cultivation, discipline, leading. She became powerful. Respected. Alone. Drunk 24/7... She slid down the tree trunk, resting on the cool grass. "I’m older now... Her mind wandered to Hei Long—the way he smiled, sharp and dangerous, but warm underneath. The way he listened to her lectures. The way he always met her jokes with ones of his own, never taking her too seriously, but never disrespectfully either. She had seen how he looked at people. How he chose people. And that... complicated her heart. Mu Qianxue gently brought her knees to her chest, resting her chin on them: "If he’s already chosen others... then maybe he wouldn’t choose me. But..." Her fingers curled against the fabric of her robe: "I still want to try." For once, it wasn’t about pride. Or competition. Or proving she was still desirable, even as the years passed. It was because Hei Long made her feel alive again. Made her feel... young. She let out a long sigh, then laughed quietly to herself: "If I say it out loud, maybe I’ll lose my nerve. But I want to tell him... I want to try being someone’s wife. Even if it’s just once." The stars shimmered above. She didn’t know if he would accept her. But she was ready to risk it. Hei Long stood a few steps behind her, hands in his sleeves, his usual grin softened by something more genuine. "You’re good at sneaking up on people," she muttered. He shrugged, stepping beside her. "Only when they’re distracted." She didn’t answer. Her eyes stayed on the sky. For a while, they stood there in silence. Then Hei Long spoke again: "You believed the rumors were just gossip, huh?" "...Yes," she admitted. "Do they bother you?" She hesitated. "I don’t know. Maybe. I think... I just didn’t expect to care." Hei Long turned to face her fully now: "You’re strong, you’re respected, you’re my master. But that doesn’t mean you have to carry everything alone." Mu Qianxue let out a short laugh: "I’m your master. What kind of master starts feeling things for her disciple?" "One who forgot I’m not just some starry-eyed beginner anymore," Hei Long said softly. "And one who deserves to be seen as a woman, not just a sword-wielding teacher." That made her flinch slightly, not from anger—but vulnerability: "You’re really saying this... now?" "I’m not asking for anything more than honesty. Do you... want to be closer?" Mu Qianxue opened her mouth to deny it. She couldn’t. The words wouldn’t come. Instead, she looked up at him with a reluctant, almost embarrassed smile. "...Just don’t make fun of me if I say yes." Hei Long grinned. "I won’t." He stepped forward, slowly, carefully. She didn’t back away. Their eyes locked. And when he gently leaned in, she met him halfway. It wasn’t a hungry kiss. No rushing. Just quiet, mutual understanding. Her hand rested on his chest. His fingers brushed the edge of her robe sleeve. When they finally pulled apart, Mu Qianxue let out a long breath, then whispered, "...You’re still my disciple." Hei Long smirked. "Then you’ll just have to train me harder." Mu Qianxue rolled her eyes, but the blush on her face was unmistakable. Hei Long casually sat down beside her on the grassy slope, brushing a few stray pine needles aside. He folded his arms behind his head, letting out a long, contented sigh. "Y’know..." he began, a teasing grin tugging at his lips: "This moment would be perfect if a certain someone didn’t suddenly appear, screaming about how unfair life is." Mu Qianxue raised an eyebrow, already knowing where this was going. "...Lin Fan?" Hei Long chuckled: "Who else? I swear, if that guy catches us like this, he’ll probably start spouting about senior-disciple etiquette and sacred teacher-discipline boundaries." Mu Qianxue gave a rare, mischievous smirk: "He’d probably try to guilt-trip me into sparring with him again, claiming I’ve been ’corrupted by your devilish charm’ or some nonsense." They both laughed, the tension from earlier melting away. "I bet his chicken would attack him again," Hei Long added, eyes twinkling. "I still can’t believe the heavens matched him with that bird," Mu Qianxue said, shaking her head in amusement: "Everyone else gets spirit wolves, storm foxes, shadow leopards... and he gets a half-blind, flightless chicken." "A perfect match," Hei Long said, his voice mock-serious: "Both loud. Both dramatic. Both easily startled." Mu Qianxue let out a soft snort as she gently rested her head against his shoulder. "...It’s nice like this," she murmured, barely above a whisper. "Yeah," Hei Long agreed, wrapping an arm loosely around her: "Sometimes I forget the world can slow down." They sat in silence for a few moments more. Mu Qianxue exhaled slowly, closing her eyes. "Let’s just stay like this for a little while," she said softly. Hei Long didn’t need to answer. He simply pulled her closer.
