Chapter 67: Regular Farm Chicken Hei Long raised an eyebrow, leaning just slightly closer: "What was that?" Bai Luoluo glared at him out of the corner of her eye: "I said thank you, alright?! Don’t make me say it twice, jerk." Hei Long grinned a little, not smugly, but softly: "You’re welcome." The Shadowstripe Fox yipped softly and curled around her feet, already forming a bond. Mu Qianxue looked incredibly pleased: "Now that’s what I like to see. Good job, both of you." As Bai Luoluo left the ring, cradling the fox in her arms, she refused to meet Hei Long’s gaze again. But the little smile tugging at her lips was unmistakable. Mu Qianxue clapped her hands together as she leaned on a rock: "Alright, little ones. Now that you’ve all bonded with your beasts—or whatever counts for that in some of your cases"— Mu Qianxue glanced briefly at Lin Fan: "It’s time to move to Stage Two: combat synergy." Mu Qianxue explained: "You will each pair up with your spirit beast and face off against one another. This teaches cooperation, coordination, and most importantly—how not to get mauled because your beast thinks you’re a tree stump." Mu Qianxue waved a hand: "First up—Hei Long versus Lin Fan." "Of course..." Hei Long muttered with a sigh, already stepping forward with his arms behind his back. His Sky Lizard slithered down his body with a hiss, its scales gleaming, its eyes intelligent and sharp. The creature curled at his feet like a panther preparing to pounce. On the other side-- Lin Fan stumbled forward—half limping, half swaggering—and behind him came... A chicken. No, not a phoenix, not some majestic bloodline beast. Just... A chicken. A dumb-looking, round, one-eyed chicken with crooked tail feathers and the permanent expression of someone who had seen too much and understood none of it. "BEHOLD!" Lin Fan pointed grandly. "My partner in battle... The Scarlet Feathered Rebirth Rooster!" He had no choice... He had to find a beast... Everyone stared. The chicken pecked the ground absentmindedly and let out a single cluck. Mu Qianxue blinked slowly: "That’s a regular farm chicken." "It has potential!" Lin Fan insisted. The chicken turned in a circle, tripped on a rock, and fell on its face. Hei Long tried very, very hard not to laugh: "Is this... some sort of performance art?" "It’s a test!" Lin Fan shouted, crossing his arms: "All of you are blinded by power levels. True greatness lies in the unseen!" The chicken jumped and latched onto Lin Fan’s pant leg, pecking wildly: "GAH! Wait—no, you’re supposed to attack him! Not me!" Lin Fan hopped around in circles, trying to shake the bird off. Hei Long rolled his shoulders: "I’m ready when you are." Mu Qianxue, now drinking directly from a gourd, waved her hand lazily: "Begin." Lin Fan pulled his chicken off his leg and tossed it forward: "Peck him, Cluckinator!" Cluckinator blinked. Then turned around and walked away. "...TRAITOR!" Lin Fan gasped. Hei Long gave a polite nod to his Sky Lizard: "Let’s finish this quickly." The Sky Lizard launched forward like a bolt of blue lightning, spinning around Lin Fan and his chicken in a blur. With one sweep of its tail, it knocked Lin Fan’s legs out from under him, flipping him in the air like a rag doll. "GAHHH—!" Lin Fan hit the ground with a grunt. The chicken turned around to help its master, only for the Sky Lizard to roar and flap its wings once. The gust sent the poor bird flying backward into a bush. "CLUUUUUCK!" echoed through the air. Even Mu Qianxue snorted her wine. Hei Long’s beast slithered back to him calmly and curled once more at his feet, tongue flicking proudly. "W-wow..." Bai Luoluo blinked, whispering to herself: "That’s... kind of cool." Lin Fan groaned, face down in the dirt: "I think... I swallowed a feather..." Mu Qianxue walked over, looked down at him, and took another swig: "You really are the underdog of this generation, huh?" The chicken crawled out of the bush, staggered toward Lin Fan, and pecked him gently on the head in what looked like mock sympathy. "Cluck..." Hei Long, brushing dirt off his sleeve, turned to his master. Mu Qianxue cleared her throat and raised her hand: "Next up—Hei Long versus Bai Luoluo." Bai Luoluo stepped forward, her brows furrowed in determination as she tightened the straps on her massive, cannon-like weapon. Beside her—her tamed beast. Its eyes burned bright with battle spirit. Hei Long stepped forward as well, hands clasped behind his back, a relaxed expression on his face. His Sky Lizard coiled beside him, tail flicking casually. Mu Qianxue raised her gourd, pointing it like a referee’s flag: "Begin!" Bai Luoluo wasted no time. "Attack!" Her beast leapt forward with a snarl, aiming straight for Hei Long’s beast. At the same time, she locked in her contraption, the runes along the barrel beginning to glow with spiritual light: "Don’t think I’ll go easy just because you’re the Saint!" But Hei Long remained still. His Sky Lizard blurred in motion—faster than anyone could track. One moment it was coiled beside him, and the next it had weaved between the other beast’s legs, tripping it mid-leap without harming it. The beast let out a surprised yelp as it skidded to the side, tumbling softly into the grass. Before Bai Luoluo could adjust her aim— Hei Long flicked a single talisman with practiced precision. It burst with a soft flash right in front of her weapon’s barrel—not to hurt, but to blind her line of sight just briefly. By the time she recovered— Hei Long was already in front of her, his palm gently pressing against her weapon, tilting it down with a soft smile. "I surrender," Bai Luoluo blurted quickly, stunned. Hei Long stepped back immediately and gave a graceful bow: "Thank you for the match, Senior Sister." It hadn’t been flashy. There were no dramatic explosions. But everyone saw how clean, decisive—and most of all, considerate—Hei Long’s victory had been. Not once did he aim to humiliate her. Not once did he mock her effort. It was clinical. Respectful. Kind. Bai Luoluo blinked, her pride barely holding itself together as she looked up at him: "You... went easy on me, right?" "I wouldn’t call it that," Hei Long replied smoothly: "I simply saw no reason to treat you like Lin Fan." Bai Luoluo stared at him for a long moment. Her usual arrogance faltered—just slightly. Her ears turned red. "Tch..." Bai Luoluo turned her head away, muttering under her breath, "Thanks... or whatever..." Hei Long pretended not to hear the soft, embarrassed whisper that followed: "...That was kinda sweet." Meanwhile, in the background, Lin Fan still sat in the dirt, holding his chicken like a wounded war buddy. "I’ll remember this humiliation," he whispered. The chicken pecked his ear.
