Chapter 274: Hollow monarch

Words : 2344 Updated : Oct 1st, 2025
The rippling surface of Lake Azuron reflected afternoon sunlight like scattered jewels, deceptively serene despite the brothers' mounting frustration. Finn Mercer slouched in a small fishing boat, his lanky frame folded awkwardly as he tugged half-heartedly at his beast caster line. Beside him, his younger brother Arlo sat rigid, eyes narrowed in concentration as he adjusted the tension on his own line. "Six hours," Finn groaned, tipping his head back. "Six hours and not a single decent catch." Arlo didn't look up from his beast caster. "Patience. Elder Moran says the deep-dwellers only surface when the water temperature drops." "Elder Moran also said this lake was teeming with category twos." Finn mimicked an elderly voice: "'Best bronze-tier hunting grounds in the East Cardinal, guaranteed yield or your credits back.'" He snorted. "Guarantee my ass." "We've still got time," Arlo insisted, though his voice lacked conviction. Finn reached into the small container between them and plunged his hand into the murky water inside. When he withdrew it, a small, dull blue core sat in his palm, no bigger than a marble. "Look at this pathetic thing," he said, holding it up to the light. The core pulsed weakly, its glow barely visible in the daylight. "One category one core. Two hundred credits, maybe two-fifty if the guild's feeling generous. That'll cover what—a week of rations? Not even our berth rent." Arlo's shoulders slumped. "Better than nothing." "Better than nothing won't keep us in the East Cardinal, let alone get us to the North." Finn tossed the core back into the container with a splash. "Three thousand credits we paid that guide fraud for 'exclusive access' to this spot. Could've bought passage to Northaven with that." "The North Cardinal taxes are even worse than here," Arlo pointed out. "Yeah, but their hunter subsidies actually mean something." Finn gestured around the empty lake. "Not like here where they treat bronze-tier like us as glorified garbage collectors. Fifty confirmed cat ones just to maintain our license, and what do we get? Access to the shittiest hunting grounds and equipment discounts nobody can afford." "At least we're not copper-tier anymore," Arlo offered. "Remember when we needed guild approval just to leave the city limits?" Finn grimaced. "Don't remind me. But unless we bag enough cores to hit silver-tier, we're stuck in the rotation pools. No solo contracts, no prime territories." "You need at least a thousand registered cores and five category threes to advance," Arlo recited, the frustration evident in his voice. "Or a single category four, but who's counting?" "Everyone's counting," Finn muttered. "That's the whole damn problem." A shout from the shoreline interrupted their complaints. Both brothers turned to see a figure waving at them from the wooden dock. "Is that—" Arlo began. "Darius," Finn confirmed with a groan. "What does his royal laziness want now?" They reluctantly reeled in their lines and steered the small craft back to shore. As they approached, their elder brother's features came into focus: wavy brown hair pulled back in a ponytail, broad shoulders, and a relaxed posture that suggested he'd been napping while they worked. "Catch anything good?" Darius called, grinning as they docked. "What do you think?" Finn replied, gesturing at their nearly empty container. "One cat one," Arlo added glumly. Darius scratched his stubbled chin. "That's... disappointing." "Yeah, no shit." Finn tied off the boat with more force than necessary. "Maybe if you'd helped instead of sunbathing all day..." "I was scouting," Darius protested, stretching languidly. "Besides, my job is backup, remember? You boys spot something you can't handle, you call me in. That's our arrangement." "Our arrangement," Arlo muttered, "seems pretty one-sided these days." Darius clapped a hand on each of their shoulders. "Look, head back out for another few hours. Lake's got deeper spots to the north. I've got a feeling about it." "A feeling?" Finn scoffed. "Like your 'feeling' about those highlands last month? Cost us our transport rental and nearly got Arlo's arm torn off by that spike cat." "Minor setback." Darius waved dismissively. "This is different. Trust me." "Trust you," Finn repeated. "Former military hotshot. Dishonorably discharged. Now hitching rides on our hunts and giving orders like you're still wearing stripes." A flicker of something—anger, perhaps, or pain—crossed Darius's face before his easy smile returned. "Technical discharge. Medical reasons. Not my fault the army healers couldn't fix this." He lifted his left arm slightly, though it remained covered by his long sleeve. "Whatever," Finn sighed. "We'll go check the north basin. But if there's nothing there, we're packing up. Storm's brewing anyway." "That's the spirit." Darius flopped down on the dock. "I'll hold down the fort. Keep your comms open." As the brothers pushed off again, Arlo whispered, "He hasn't held down anything except that dock chair since we left Eastport." "Former military, and now he's just dead weight," Finn agreed. "Army couldn't fix him, so now he's our problem." "Remember his stories about the Frontline? How a single S-rank awakened could take down thirty cat fours?" Arlo's voice held a mixture of admiration and skepticism. "Hard to believe that's the same guy who can't be bothered to help us hit our quota." "That's the thing about the military ranking system," Finn replied. "All flash, no substance. Alpha class, S-rank, SS-rank, SSS-rank—fancy titles to make soldiers feel special. Meanwhile, guys like us are stuck in the real world, counting cores and scraping by." They navigated toward the deeper waters, the silence between them comfortable despite their shared frustration. "You know," Arlo said eventually, "I heard even silver-tier hunters in the North Cardinal can afford their own apartments. No more shared bunks in guild housing." Finn's eyes lit up. "And they've got dedicated core markets. No middleman guilds taking thirty percent cuts." "Plus, that place by the mountain range—what's it called?" "Frosthold," Finn supplied. "Where the real money is. Gold-tier hunting grounds at minimum, platinum access if you've got the numbers." "We could make it there," Arlo said, voice filled with uncharacteristic determination. "Just need one good haul. One category three, even." "Dream bigger," Finn grinned. "One cat four and we'd jump straight to silver-tier. Skip the quota grind entirely." Their conversation halted as dark clouds gathered on the horizon with unusual speed. The wind picked up, sending ripples across the previously calm surface. "Shit," Finn groaned. "Just our luck." "Three thousand credits down the drain," Arlo agreed, checking his weather display. "Storm's moving fast—we should head back." Before they could turn around, the lake's surface began to churn. Small fish leapt from the water in panicked arcs, followed by larger creatures—scaled backs breaking the surface as they fled from something below. "What the—" Finn began, just as a massive creature erupted from the water beside their boat. Easily the size of a small transport, its serpentine body glistened with iridescent scales as it crashed back down, sending their small craft rocking violently. "CAT THREE!" Arlo shouted, gripping the sides to keep from falling overboard. "That's a deepfin wyrm!" More creatures surfaced around them, a bizarre exodus of lake life fleeing in all directions. "DARIUS!" Finn bellowed into his comm unit. "GET YOUR ASS OUT HERE!" The boat lurched again as another large beast—this one resembling a giant turtle with luminous shell plates—collided with their hull. "He's not answering!" Arlo yelled, frantically trying to stabilize their craft. "Useless!" Finn spat. "When we actually need—" A massive splash cut him off as something large hit the water nearby. Both brothers turned to see Darius swimming toward them with powerful strokes, his body shifting and changing as he moved. His legs fused into a powerful tail, scales erupting across his lower body as his form adapted to the water. "Get ready to catch!" he called, voice distorted by the partial transformation of his vocal cords. Only his left arm remained unchanged—gray and scaly, ending in wicked claws that seemed too large and misshapen for his body. The disfigurement stood out starkly against his otherwise sleek aquatic form. Darius dove beneath the surface, then burst upward seconds later, now resembling something between a man and a manta ray. In his normal right hand, he clutched a thrashing lake creature. He tossed it into their boat, where it flopped wildly before Finn dispatched it with a quick thrust of his hunting knife. "Cat two!" Arlo exclaimed, extracting the glowing green core from the creature's body. Darius continued his hunt, shifting forms with each dive—sometimes emerging as something shark-like, other times with tentacles or massive fins. Each transformation was fluid and impressive, yet his left arm remained constant—that same gray, scaled appendage with its unnatural claws. The brothers worked frantically, processing the catches Darius threw into their boat. Their container began to fill with cores of varying sizes and colors. "This is amazing!" Finn laughed, holding up a bright orange cat three core. "We haven't seen this many in months!" "What's driving them all up?" Arlo wondered, scanning the increasingly turbulent water. Their answer came as a piercing shriek split the air—a sound like metal tearing combined with thunder. The lake's surface didn't just ripple or wave—it imploded, water rushing inward as if sucked into a massive drain. A blinding flash of blue-tinged lightning struck the center of the disturbance. The shock wave sent their boat flying toward shore, both brothers clinging desperately to whatever they could grab. They landed in the shallows with bone-jarring force, their vessel splintering around them. Through dazed eyes, they watched as something moved across the half-emptied lake—a dark streak tinged with electric blue, too fast to track. Where it passed, water creatures simply vanished, their bodies disappearing without a trace. Core energy flared briefly before winking out. Ice spread across the remaining water in fractal patterns, crackling as it formed. For a moment, the entire lake seemed frozen in a beautiful, terrifying tableau of jagged ice formations. Then, with a sound like shattering glass, the ice exploded outward as the blue-black streak departed as suddenly as it had arrived. Within seconds, there was no evidence of the entity that had caused such devastation, save for the drastically lowered water level and absolute absence of aquatic life. Finn and Arlo dragged themselves onto the shore, coughing up water and staring in disbelief at the scene. "What... what was that?" Arlo wheezed. Before Finn could answer, a laugh drew their attention. Darius stood nearby, his form fully human again except for that ever-present left arm. But rather than looking shocked or frightened, his face was alive with an expression they'd never seen before—a wild, almost manic excitement. "Boys," he called, walking toward them with sudden purpose, "step back." "Darius, what—" "I saw it," he interrupted, eyes gleaming. "And I felt it. That was no ordinary beast." He flexed his misshapen left hand, the claws extending. "It's time I showed you what a true alpha class can do." The brothers exchanged worried glances as Darius closed his eyes, his body trembling with concentration. "Biggest transformation yet," he whispered, more to himself than to them. "Time to show everyone what I'm really capable of." Finn and Arlo backed away slowly as the air around their elder brother began to shimmer with energy. --- Meanwhile, aboard the transport ship, Noah stared at the holographic display only he could see. Data streamed across his vision, confirming what he already felt in his bones—Storm had found another hunting ground. "He's feeding, but it's not enough." Sophie appeared in the doorway, her expression grave. "We tracked the energy signature to these coordinates, but looks like we're too late again." "Not just late," Noah replied, gesturing at the display only he could see. "Whatever he's hunting, it's not satisfying him. He's moving faster, growing stronger, but his hunger is..." He trailed off, searching for the right word. "Insatiable?" Kelvin suggested, joining them. "The ship's sensors detected massive energy consumption at the site. Whatever was in that lake is gone now—completely absorbed." Noah nodded, a chill running down his spine that had nothing to do with the frost still clinging to the ship's interior. "We need to find him soon," he said quietly. "Before he decides humans might make a better meal than beasts or someone or something picks up on his energy too."
