In the midst of Zeng Liu and others’ somewhat anxious and expectant busyness, a day quickly passed.
They also packed up the things they needed to carry, ready to set off.
Zeng Liu’s group of four could pack their things and leave this dead county town, but the luck was not as good for those wanderers whom Chen Xin had injured.
Although Chen Xin did not take their lives, and their injuries were temporarily under control through their own handling, neither Chen Xin nor Zeng Liu’s group had any intention of taking these people along.
So ultimately, the only people able to leave with Chen Xin were Zeng Liu and her group of four.
This evidently made the group of wanderers exceptionally envious, but being injured and intimidated by the drone’s force, even if they wanted to do something, they were not capable and had missed their chance.
Perhaps when Zeng Liu’s group was packing their things during the night, the wanderers could have ambushed them and maybe done something, but clearly, the previous drone attack scared them senseless.
After all, they were merely a group of lowly wanderers; even a handgun could terrify them, let alone two drones that truly shoot.
Zeng Liu’s group’s departure was smooth. Though the things to carry were slightly numerous, Zeng Liu’s group tirelessly made several trips, carrying all their belongings up and piled them beside Chen Xin’s car.
Looking at the items Zeng Liu’s group brought up, Chen Xin couldn’t help but frown and said, "I said you only need to bring essential personal items, right? None of these things look like essential personal items."
"These are our clothes, food, and some..." Zeng Liu tried to explain.
Though they had made choices of what to bring, they still held the idea that their worn-out household valuables were important. They couldn’t bear to throw this away or give that up, wanting to take a large heap of things.
But in Chen Xin’s eyes, these things were nothing but a pile of junk.
Because most items, by the definition before the disaster, were indeed junk.
There were empty canned food containers, reusable plastic bottles, homemade simple filters... and piles of pots and pans, even a sack of charcoal.
Despite understanding why Zeng Liu’s group was reluctant to part with these things, recognizing these items were their crucial survival resources from before, Chen Xin still couldn’t allow them to bring all this stuff.
So, before Zeng Liu finished her explanation, Chen Xin interrupted her, shook his head, and said, "There’s not enough space in the car for you to bring these things. Food, clothes, essential personal items — those are the three types of things you can carry."
Having said that, he turned and got into the car, ignoring Zeng Liu.
Upon hearing Chen Xin’s words, Zeng Liu and Old Tang couldn’t help but look at each other, and Little Leaf, supporting Sister Ning beside them, also showed a bewildered expression.
Eventually, it was Sister Ning, whose body was somewhat weak, who spoke up and said, "Do as he says; we have no choice, and indeed there is no need to bring so much stuff."
Seeing what Sister Ning said, Old Tang and Zeng Liu then began sorting through the pile of things they had carried up, removing unnecessary items and preparing to discard them.
However, saying to discard them, facing these things they had painstakingly collected or made before, it was hard to part with them all at once.
Fortunately, Old Tang and Zeng Liu knew the importance of the situation and wouldn’t risk upsetting Chen Xin for a bunch of things, losing this opportunity to leave the city.
So, they sorted out most unnecessary items, leaving only some collected food, clothes for the four, and some personal belongings, before knocking on Chen Xin’s car door again.
"It seems you did make some choices," Chen Xin glanced at the reorganized luggage of the four, finally nodding in satisfaction.
Chen Xin got out of the car and led the four to the tailgate, opened the trunk, and said, "Put your luggage here."
Seeing this, Zeng Liu and Old Tang quickly put the items they wanted to carry into the trunk.
As Old Tang put their luggage into the trunk, he couldn’t help looking at the items inside, evidently shocked by the food that filled the trunk.
Since the county population had migrated to the three towns, they hadn’t seen so much food in a long time.
However, Old Tang and Zeng Liu didn’t have any thoughts about these items, apart from being envious that Chen Xin owned so much food.
Once the luggage was settled, Old Tang and Zeng Liu then joined Little Leaf and Sister Ning inside the car.
Inside the vehicle, Chen Xin looked at the four after they got in and said to them, "I promised Zeng Liu; she helped me heal, so I’ll take you to a new shelter, that’s why I let you on the car."
"Thank you for your help, once we reach the new shelter, we’ll disembark and won’t trouble you anymore." Zeng Liu hurriedly assured him that the four wouldn’t linger and not leave.
The other three quickly followed, expressing they had no intention of overstaying their welcome.
Chen Xin nodded slightly before continuing, "I’m heading to Anhui Province next, and the next county might be like this one, with the population already migrated, so I may drop you off in Anhui Province."
"Anhui Province?" Old Tang couldn’t help but ask; they were all from Hubei Province, so heading to Anhui Province was rather unexpected.
After all, this isn’t before the disaster; going to Anhui Province might mean never returning to Hubei Province.
Chen Xin didn’t express any opinion on this, only explaining his upcoming route before saying no more: "The table here can be lowered to form a double bed, and you can also sleep at the top when you climb from the back, so tonight you can sleep in these two spots."
If there’s nothing else, I’ll be leaving soon. It’s bumpy on the road, so you better find a place to sit nicely."
After saying this, Chen Xin no longer concerned himself with the four, went to the driver’s seat, and prepared to start the vehicle.
Upon seeing this, Zeng Liu and the others hurriedly sat down on the sofa.
This was the first time after the disaster for the four to sit in a car, and they were fleeing this already dead county town, which couldn’t help but make them feel like they were transported to another world.
"Sister Liu, are we leaving the county town?" Feeling the vehicle beneath her start moving, Little Leaf, while supporting Sister Ning to rest on the sofa, uncertainly asked Zeng Liu.
Zeng Liu nodded and affirmed, "Mr. Chen Xin promised he would take us to the next shelter; we can indeed leave here now."
Upon hearing Zeng Liu’s words, Little Leaf finally felt she could escape this abandoned county town, revealing a joyful smile on her face.
