Her eyes moved to the royal clock—it already said midnight. Who could be awake at this hour? Still, she moved to open the door. She didn’t know who it was, but her hands had already turned the doorknob. Her heart pounded as she opened the door, and her eyes met Stephanie’s. Her eyes widened as she noticed Stephanie’s red and swollen eyes, evidence that she had not slept and had been crying. "Come in," she whispered softly, careful not to wake little Vreni, who was soundly asleep. As Stephanie entered, Ariana gently closed the door.
