The Black Arrow failed to kill Smaug and was even melted by his dragon fire. This outcome greatly disappointed everyone who had pinned their hopes on it.
"Bard, there's still a chance!" Kael shouted loudly to the disheartened Bard.
Bard raised his head, shaking it with a bitter smile. "But the only Black Arrow that could kill the dragon is gone! What else can we do?"
Kael drew a magnificent spear gleaming with silver light from his enchanted pouch.
"This is the divine spear Aeglos, the weapon of Gil-galad, High King of the Noldor. It once pierced through the Dark Lord Sauron's armor and wounded him. It possesses unstoppable piercing power. Its length is about the same as the Black Arrow. Use it to shoot the dragon again!"
Kael threw the silver spear to Bard.
Bard was very surprised upon receiving the spear. He had enough discernment to see that this spear was extremely powerful, far more precious and sharper than his Black Arrow.
But he was somewhat worried. "But the dragon is already on guard, and the gap in his scales has been sealed with molten slag. I'm afraid he won't give us a chance to hit his weak spot."
Kael shook his head, his face full of confidence.
"This time, we're not aiming for the gap in his chest scales."
"Not the gap?"
"Right, not there. Aim for his wing instead. I need you to shoot through one of the dragon's wings and make him completely lose his ability to fly!"
Kael said with a very serious expression, "I'll create an opportunity for you in a moment. Only one chance to bring him down. Can you do it?"
"I can!" Bard nodded firmly.
Kael looked deeply at Bard, hoping that fate would favor him this time. Then he turned his flying broomstick and pursued Smaug the dragon.
Meanwhile, Gandalf on the dragon's back was also very busy, gripping the sword embedded in the dragon's back with one hand while using his staff to release blinding light with the other, preventing the dragon from opening his eyes and forcing him to fly blindly.
This also gave Kael a chance to catch up. Another Cruciatus Curse weakened the dragon's speed and reactions.
Kael and Gandalf cooperated seamlessly, intentionally or unintentionally driving the dragon toward Bard's direction again.
Seeing the dragon had entered Bard's range, Kael cast with all his might once more.
"Imperio!"
The Imperius Curse's magic struck Smaug. For the first time, Kael clearly felt the dragon's soul's tremendous power.
No wonder his Killing Curse couldn't kill Smaug. When the Imperius Curse acted on the dragon's soul, it was like trying to move a giant countless times heavier than himself—extremely strenuous.
But even so, he successfully made the dragon lose focus for a few seconds, his movements becoming sluggish.
"Now! Bard!" Kael's veins bulged as he shouted through gritted teeth.
Bard mounted the divine spear Aeglos on the giant crossbow. As Kael's voice rang out, having already aimed at the dragon, he instantly shot the divine spear.
Accompanied by the spear transforming into a silver light and making a sharp whistling sound through the air, the divine spear instantly broke through the dragon scales and struck where the dragon's wing connected to his body.
With a mournful roar from the dragon, Smaug fell like a bird with a broken wing. Under the effects of gravity and acceleration, along with Gandalf still on his back, he plummeted straight toward the ground.
With a thunderous crash, the dragon slammed heavily into the Long Lake, raising towering waves. The dragon's body was so massive that even falling into the lake, half his form was still exposed above the water surface.
As for Gandalf, he still stood on the dragon's back, completely unharmed. He wielded his staff, continuously striking the dragon, releasing shock waves and light magic, hammering the dragon back into the lake.
Smaug tried to struggle and fly again, but his wing, wounded by the divine spear Aeglos, could no longer support flight. Instead, he fell embarrassingly back into the lake water.
"No! It shouldn't be like this! I won't lose like this!" The dragon kept struggling, continuously letting out mournful roars.
"Glacius Maxima!" Kael released freezing air toward the lake water around the dragon. The lake surface rapidly froze as he tried to encase the dragon in ice.
The dragon noticed Kael's intention and struggled even more violently. "Don't think you can trap me! Let everything be destroyed!"
Smaug roared madly, then breathed scorching flames to burn the lake water, even breathing fire on himself to prevent the lake water from freezing.
Smaug's mad behavior forced even Gandalf to jump off his back to avoid being burned by the flames. The flames the dragon breathed were extremely difficult to extinguish. Even in the lake water, the flames continued burning on the lake surface and spreading around, gradually threatening Lake-town not far away.
"Kael, we need to find a way to make him stop breathing fire, or Lake-town will be burned down!" Gandalf loudly reminded.
Kael naturally understood the severity of the situation and immediately waved his wand.
"Aqua Eructo!"
As magic surged, a huge whirlpool appeared on the lake surface, forming a rotating giant water sphere that trapped the dragon inside, spinning continuously, with even the flames he breathed being swept up within.
This was advanced water magic—the "Water Prison Technique." When Harry Potter went to the Department of Mysteries in his fifth year, Dumbledore had used this spell to trap Voldemort.
When Kael saw this spell in the spellbook, he was deeply impressed and learned it. Creating a water prison large enough to contain a dragon wasn't easy. Fortunately, he had the geographical advantage now, with endless lake water available to draw upon.
The dragon was like being inside a washing machine, constantly tumbling left, right, up, and down. Whenever he opened his mouth, lake water poured directly down his throat, giving him no chance to breathe fire.
Kael concentrated fully, continuously channeling his magic. He didn't know if dragons could drown, so he could only keep persisting. Sweat gradually appeared on his forehead.
Although he didn't face the issue of magical exhaustion, channeling magic was still mentally taxing and would cause fatigue.
Just as Kael's mental strength was beginning to flag, a warm energy flowed into his body, instantly dispelling his fatigue and fully restoring his spirit.
It was Gandalf taking action. The Ring of Fire Narya in his hand gleamed brilliantly, continuously channeling energy into Kael's body.
With the power of the Ring of Fire's enhancement, Kael's spell power greatly increased. More and more lake water gathered together, wrapping the dragon completely tight, not giving him any chance to break free.
As time passed, after what felt like hours, Smaug in the water sphere stopped struggling and lay motionless as if dead.
But Kael and Gandalf still dared not let their guard down. Dragons had powerful vitality. If they could be drowned so easily, they wouldn't have become the embodiment of disaster feared by the people of Middle-earth.
Sure enough, seeing that Kael and Gandalf weren't fooled, Smaug in the water sphere opened his cunning eyes again, filled with unwillingness and rage.
