The girl saw his awkward manner and couldn’t help but laugh. That smile was like the most beautiful flower blossoming in spring, enough to melt ice, making Su Chen’s head instantly spin.
"Are you new here? Quickly give my Huanhuan back to me."
The girl extended her jade-like delicate hand, looking at Su Chen with pure, bright eyes.
Su Chen’s arms trembled as he seemed to muster all his strength to hand over the flower cat, which was reluctant to leave his embrace, to the girl. His lips moved a few times but still didn’t dare to ask her name.
"Here, your flower cat..."
He said hesitantly, his face flushed.
Upon hearing this, the girl suddenly giggled again, "Huanhuan is not a flower cat~". At her words, "Huanhuan" also raised its head in discontent, looking at Su Chen with a seemingly wronged innocence. Su Chen gasped lightly and asked softly: "Then what is it?"
"It’s a Nine-tailed Flower Raccoon, a Spirit Beast. But Huanhuan hasn’t grown up yet and has only one tail."
The girl held "Huanhuan" close and affectionately rubbed it against her delicate cheeks, brushing Su Chen’s heart with a gentle thrill. If only he were that flower cat!
Seeing his face suddenly brighten up with a smile, the girl blinked her large eyes and asked, "Why are you smiling?"
"I didn’t smile..."
Su Chen, feeling guilty, hurriedly tried to cover up, and when the girl still seemed incredulous, he quickly changed the subject, "Uh, what’s your name?"
"Me? My name is Yue Xianling, the Sect Leader of Carefree Sect is my father~" the girl said with a squinting smile, then she took the Nine-tailed Flower Raccoon and merrily walked away.
Su Chen was left standing in place, dazed for a long time.
Yue Xianling, she was the one the senior brother mentioned, the junior sister Ling’er?
When Su Chen came to his senses, the girl was already far away. Watching her beautiful silhouette disappear, Su Chen finally reluctantly turned to leave.
After he walked away, a graceful and charming lady slowly emerged from the crimson pavilion. Her eyes were bright, her teeth white, her waist slender, her figure alluring—enough to enchant anyone. Her misty almond eyes held a particular meaning.
"Ling’er, what do you think of that child?"
The lady asked with a laughing tone.
Yue Xianling stroked the Nine-tailed Flower Raccoon in her arms and laughed lightly, "Mother, are you referring to that guy just now? He’s quite reckless, but his personality is rather amusing, hehe."
Looking at Yue Xianling’s perfectly pure and beautiful appearance, the lady smiled warmly, her heart swelling with tender affection, "You child, just know how to play. At twelve years old, don’t you want to do something serious?"
"Mother, what serious things?"
Yue Xianling deliberately looked at Wen Ruyu with playful eyes.
"Like following your senior brothers in cultivation, or even learning some needlework suitable for daughters." Wen Ruyu sighed with a helpless smile.
"I won’t! Those are the things only girls from ordinary families do. I, Yue Xianling, refuse to be the same as them."
Wen Ruyu sighed again, "So what great plans do you have?"
"I want to find a hero like father to marry, follow him so that I have no worries, and simply play with my Huanhuan every day. How carefree!"
With that, she raised the Nine-tailed Flower Raccoon, full of smiles, "What do you think, Huanhuan? Do I sound right?"
The Nine-tailed Flower Raccoon let out a happy cry, accompanied by Yue Xianling’s innocent and joyful laughter, disappearing from Wen Ruyu’s sight.
Leaning against the balcony rail, Wen Ruyu placed her hand on her forehead, her jade face tinged with blush, "This girl, who knows what she’s always thinking about. Even daring to say such embarrassing words..."
The next morning, the new disciples of Carefree Sect woke up early. After freshening up, Su Chen joined his companions heading to the square. It was then he learned where he had been the day before, the place where the Master and his family lived, named "Phantom Moon Pavilion," and it was normally off-limits to any disciple.
Currently, they were heading to the dining hall of Carefree Sect, which stood opposite Phantom Moon Pavilion, separated by a jogging distance of roughly ten minutes. After breakfast in the dining hall, the group, led by Chang Zhichun and Bai Yun, majestically arrived at the square.
On the square, senior brothers continued practicing wind shadow sword techniques. However, to make room for the new disciples, two squads had been moved to the back mountain for training.
Chang Zhichun smiled warmly at the teenagers, with Bai Yun standing calmly beside him. Su Chen, among the crowd, appeared small and tried hard to tiptoe to see, but it was still challenging.
"Today’s primary task is to teach you some rules and regulations of Carefree Sect, so you should listen carefully."
Chang Zhichun’s smile was inviting, yet his tone carried a hint of solemnity.
The youths all nodded earnestly, eagerly watching Chang Zhichun and Bai Yun.
"Carefree Sect is honored as one of the seven great factions on the Profound Cyan Continent, even bearing the tendency to lead others. Naturally, this is due to the teachings of each generation’s Sect Leader and Master and Mistress. However, undeniably, it is the rules passed down through generations that restrain us, urging us to train diligently and bring honor to the Sect."
The teenagers nodded in agreement, their eyes filled with admiration and respect.
"As a member of Carefree Sect, how do we restrain ourselves to not violate the rules?"
Chang Zhichun looked at them meaningfully.
"Don’t fight or cause trouble!"
A youth shouted.
"Don’t disturb the peace, abide by your duties!"
"Bring justice and eliminate evil!"...
Once someone started, the crowd became spirited, eagerly discussing.
After they were exhausted from shouting, Chang Zhichun smiled and asked, "So, let me ask you, if an evil person passes by, what will you choose to do?"
"If people don’t harm me, I won’t harm them."
Someone shouted again.
"No, since they are evil, they naturally must be fought by everyone!"
Chang Zhichun’s gaze burned into the crowd until it landed on Su Chen’s head, which had finally emerged from the crowd. "Su Chen, what do you think?"
Su Chen took a breath before softly saying, "I would first see if he’s done anything evil."
At his intent, everyone erupted in laughter, with many scoffing.
"When he’s already done evil, will you have time to intervene?"
"Exactly, by then good people would’ve been hurt. What use are you then?"
Su Chen was silenced by the overwhelming voices, lowering his head quietly. In truth, he hadn’t expected the senior brother to suddenly ask him that question; otherwise, he would not have wanted to be the target of everyone.
"The reason I asked you this question is to see how you define the word ’evil.’ Perhaps some people have never been harmed by wicked individuals throughout their lives, and they do not care whether wickedness exists; others might have suffered greatly due to evil forces, leaving them with deep-seated hatred for evil. Regardless of their views, in our eyes, evil is evil, holding no compassion or justice, only incessant bloodshed and conflict! There is no one among evil individuals worthy of sympathy or empathy, regardless of whether they commit evil or not, they remain our enemies."
To Su Chen, who remembered Chang Zhichun as always laughing, he seemed suddenly cold and merciless, his tone murderously solemn, leaving Su Chen feeling as if he’d been struck and unable to breathe.
The teenagers stared dumbly at Chang Zhichun, and after a long time, someone spoke out in agreement, others discussed, and some remained silent, including Su Chen.
"The first rule of Carefree Sect: Remove the evil, uphold the good!"
Chang Zhichun’s tone was severe.
Suddenly, everyone felt their energies surging, instantly igniting their inner beliefs, and began chanting!
"Remove the evil, uphold the good!"
"Remove the evil, uphold the good!"
The chants drowned out everything, completely overshadowing Su Chen’s weak and innocent inner voice.
Chang Zhichun raised his hand, and everyone stopped chanting. He sported a trace of a smile again, "Since everyone agrees with this first regulation, next, I’ll let Junior Sister Bai Yun introduce additional rules."
Bai Yun took a moment, her graceful face displaying solemnity, as she began reciting the dozens of Carefree Sect’s rules one by one. The teenagers listened intently, diligently memorizing, all demonstrating attitudes of submission.
Only Su Chen maintained a frown, looking gloomy. From a young age, his father taught him that kindness received should be reciprocated. If one had been aided by evil forces, should they go against their conscience and kill in return?
