Chapter 1011: Chapter 1009 Candidate
In the evening, Old Granny Zhang returned with a look of triumph on her face.
Wang Yongzhu had already prepared dinner, a simple mung bean porridge with egg pancakes, along with mushroom sauce and a few side dishes; nothing could be more comforting to eat in the scorching heat.
After finishing dinner, Old Granny Zhang went back to her room, and nobody knew what she was up to.
Wang Yongzhu was a bit worried. After Gu Yu finished tidying up the kitchen, she called her over and asked quietly, “Today, you went out with my mother—”
Gu Yu had been trained well by now and immediately replied, “Madam, the old lady went to an aunt’s house today. I heard it sounded like your Fourth Brother and Fourth Sister-in-law were matchmakers for that aunt. The old lady went inside with that aunt, and I don’t know what they talked about, but when they came out, the old lady seemed quite pleased. That aunt kept reassuring her to leave it to her, that everything would be handled properly.”
Wang Yongzhu immediately understood. Her mother couldn’t stand by anymore, finding Wang Yongfu and the others ineffective, so she decided to take matters into her own hands.
That aunt was actually a clan aunt from the Wang Family, with the last name Qin, known as Aunt Qin.
Wang Yongzhu had an impression of her as a very warm-hearted person. She acted as a matchmaker but never spoke empty words, not the type who would exaggerate before marriage and turn households against each other after marriage.
In Qilidun, whenever matchmaking was needed, whether both families had interest or a go-between was necessary, anyone who approached her never found themselves in a situation that couldn’t be resolved.
With this aunt acting as a matchmaker, it seemed likely that Jindou’s marriage was settled.
As expected, in a few days, Aunt Qin came over, and Old Granny Zhang didn’t keep it from Wang Yongzhu.
She asked Gu Yu to serve tea and prepared some snacks to welcome Aunt Qin, exchanged some pleasantries, and after Aunt Qin praised Wang Yongzhu a bit, they got down to business.
“Sister-in-law, about the task you entrusted to me, I’ve visited several families these past few days and finally found some prospects. There are three girls whom I find suitable, matching the conditions you mentioned. One is from the Li Family at the end of the village. She is the eldest at home with several siblings. Her mother passed a few years ago, and she now manages the household both inside and out. She’s indeed hardworking and takes care of the family. Her skin is a bit dark and she may not be that pretty, but I’ve seen her physique: broad waist and large hips, typical of a childbearing body. The family is interested but would demand a high bride price!”
“Then there’s one from the neighboring village. I won’t hide it from you; she’s a cousin from my maternal side. I’m not boasting as her aunt, but this girl is quite good-looking and seems blessed. She’s the only daughter with several brothers above and a younger brother below, rather pampered since she hasn’t faced hardships. She has a gentle nature, especially good at taking care of children. All her nephews adore her.”
“My niece is excellent except for a bit of childish temperament. However, she gets over things quickly. At first, her family disagreed, mainly fearing issues with in-laws later on, but didn’t you assure me, sister-in-law? That the eldest brother of the Wang Family doesn’t plan to remarry, and Lady Lin only needs some grain annually, which made them consider it a bit more.”
“The last family isn’t a village girl but from the town. This girl’s last name is Quan, and her family only consists of her and her father now. Her mother died early, and her honest father had been relying on her mother to keep their small family business intact. After her mother passed, her father’s brothers took everything except the two rooms they live in.”
“This girl is pretty and has a generous nature. If it weren’t for her efforts, even those two rooms might not be theirs today. Now it’s rumored those brothers want to force her into becoming someone’s concubine. She’s desperate, knowing her father isn’t dependable. Since she has some distant relatives through her mother with my family, she asked me to help find her a decent match, as long as the family is respectable and the man is capable.”
Aunt Qin quickly and clearly explained the situation of the three candidates.
She didn’t hide any strengths or weaknesses.
Old Granny Zhang was satisfied and hurriedly thanked Aunt Qin, “Thank you, sister-in-law, for putting so much effort into our family’s matter! We’ll consider it carefully. We’ll need to ask the child’s opinion, and once decided, we’ll certainly need you to help mediate!”
This was, of course, the proper way.
Aunt Qin also understood that after proposing candidates, the family needed to think and deliberate before making a decision.
So she didn’t say much more, nodded in agreement, and got up to leave: “Think it over well, and contact me once you have made a decision!”
Old Granny Zhang promptly wrapped up some snacks and politely saw Aunt Qin off at the door.
She then turned around and asked Wang Yongzhu, “Daughter, which family do you think is best?”
Wang Yongzhu thought the girl from the town sounded wonderful. However, given the current norms, people tended not to marry a girl who lost her mother early, believing without a female elder’s guidance, she lacked proper upbringing.
But Wang Yongzhu thought that Miss Quan, being capable enough to secure her own future, wasn’t bad. Even if she was a bit shrewd, it wasn’t a problem since Jindou was too honest. If he married a similarly honest wife, they might easily fall under Lady Lin’s control.
Instead, a clever wife might suppress Lady Lin.
Besides, considering she’d be the main wife and the eldest grandson in this era, choosing such a wife demands careful consideration.
Moreover, her approval wasn’t enough; both the Elder Brother and Jindou needed to approve as well.
So she smiled and said, “I think all three are good. The Li Family’s daughter seems interested in our eldest brother’s wealth. Aunt Qin’s cousin seems too childish, and since Jindou is the eldest grandson, a childish wife might not be suitable. It only leaves the Quan Family girl who seems astute, which I think is an advantage.”
There was no need to say more; Old Granny Zhang understood and nodded repeatedly: “My daughter has clear insight; among the three girls, probably only Miss Quan is truly suitable.”
With that, she called Gu Yu to fetch Wang Yongfu and Jindou.
Soon, Wang Yongfu and Jindou arrived in a hurry: “Mother, what’s up?”
Old Granny Zhang straightforwardly laid out the situation, “Your Aunt Qin came by today and explained everything in detail. You’ve heard about the three girls, right?”
Wang Yongfu and Jindou nodded quickly, having heard everything clearly.
Wang Yongfu looked delighted and said, “This matter needed you to handle it, mother! All three girls are good; you just make the decision!”
Jindou, however, seemed to have something to say.
