Chapter 1001: Chapter 999 Temporary No Issues
Wang Yongzhu kept her eyes closed and said nothing. She knew that at this moment, what Song Chongjin needed wasn’t her comfort, but her silent companionship, to tell him he wasn’t alone.
Thinking back, it was fortunate they had agreed from the start that there would be no secrets between them, and they would lay everything out on the table.
Otherwise, if there ever came a day when he suddenly handed her a letter of divorce, she might really not be able to resist taking action against Song Chongjin.
She detested those who claimed to be doing something for her own good, shouldering everything secretly with a deep sense of bitterness, saying things like “it’s all for your good.”
You’re not me, how do you know what’s good for me?
Good thing Song Chongjin was sensible, otherwise...
Song Chongjin, who was holding Wang Yongzhu, couldn’t help but shiver and pulled her closer.
The next morning, everyone seemed to notice something was off between the young couple?
It seemed like Song Chongjin was more clingy with Yongzhu? More servile than usual?
Old Granny Zhang and Lady Qi didn’t know what had happened, but Imperial Physician Du guessed a thing or two.
He found an opportunity to pull Song Chongjin aside, “Yongzhu found out?”
Song Chongjin nodded, then spoke in a voice that sounded regretful but even a dog could hear the gloat in it, “Master, I told Yongzhu yesterday, just in case it goes wrong, that we would divorce, but she disagreed!”
Imperial Physician Du looked at Song Chongjin suspiciously, “What did Yongzhu say?”
Recalling the scene from yesterday, all his fear turned sweet, “Yongzhu said she would only be a widow, not get divorced!”
Imperial Physician Du displayed a pained expression, looking at Song Chongjin. Had his apprentice-son-in-law gone dumb with fright? This was a clear threat, yet how did he hear a hint of joy in him?
Is he crazy?
“So, Master, please pretend you didn’t hear what I asked you about yesterday! No matter what the future holds, as long as Yongzhu and I are together, through thick and thin, I’d be content!”
As Song Chongjin spoke, there was a smile between his eyebrows.
Imperial Physician Du, having been fed a load of dog food, silently retreated a step, thinking that he was too old to understand the world of the young!
After breakfast, they heard the two men left at the door last night report that Lord Chen had come again.
Imperial Physician Du’s hand tensed around the teacup but quickly relaxed, looking at Song Chongjin and Wang Yongzhu.
Song Chongjin’s face showed calmness and composure after burning his bridges, “I’ll go welcome Lord Chen—”
He got up, but before he reached the door, Governor Chen and Zhu Haoran had already strolled in by themselves.
“The student welcomes the two lords!” Song Chongjin bowed and guided them in, glancing behind them to see they were only accompanied by a few followers, not the squad of guards he had imagined.
Among the followers was Zhang Hu, who nodded at Song Chongjin.
Song Chongjin returned the nod and uttered an apology, then led the two lords inside.
In the main room, Old Granny Zhang, Lady Qi, and Wang Yongzhu had already retreated to the inner chamber to avoid suspicion.
Imperial Physician Du also came out with a smile, and there was much courteous exchange among the three.
The purpose was soon stated, “Old Du, we have completed our duties here in Jing County and are returning to the Capital City, so we came to bid you farewell. Is there anything you wish to send or say to Young Master Du?”
Imperial Physician Du was momentarily stunned but quickly realized: Was the issue with Song Chongjin resolved?
Although not completely certain, seeing the calm expressions of Governor Chen and Zhu Haoran, and observing their normal demeanor towards Song Chongjin, he felt somewhat relieved.
He replied with a laugh, “I haven’t been back at my old home in Jing County for long. This place can’t compare to the bustling Capital City, what good things could there be? Just please tell my worthless son to carry out his duties diligently and serve His Majesty well! Both my wife and I have no worries. Also, inform him that his father has taken in a last apprentice sister for him, and he should prepare a gift for when they meet. Who knows when she might come to the Capital City, and if he doesn’t present anything decent, I, his father, will give him a good beating!”
Governor Chen’s eyes twinkled and he smiled, “Rest assured, Old Du, we’ll convey your message! Master Du will surely have to prepare well, maybe even open his wallet next year.”
Imperial Physician Du’s grin deepened, and they shared a look; there was no need for more words.
Song Chongjin and Zhu Haoran, hearing everything clearly on the side, heard Zhu Haoran say a couple of things about scholarly matters. Satisfied with Song Chongjin’s response, he nodded and offered a few pointers.
Song Chongjin naturally committed them to memory, showing even more respect towards Zhu Haoran.
As for the meal invitation, Governor Chen and Zhu Haoran, after checking the time, did not refuse.
In the inner chamber, Old Granny Zhang and Lady Qi didn’t catch what was said earlier, but Wang Yongzhu had heard everything clearly. She immediately realized that Song Chongjin was likely safe for now, at least for the time being, judging from the attitudes of Governor Chen and Zhu Haoran.
She breathed a sigh of relief inside and, hearing about their staying for lunch, hurriedly pulled Old Granny Zhang and Lady Qi to discuss the menu with Old Madam Ding in the kitchen.
In the front yard, once the pleasantries ended and seeing it was still early, Imperial Physician Du suggested taking a stroll in the lower flower garden.
Governor Chen and Zhu Haoran had noticed it on the way here. While there were plenty of gardens in the Capital City, none as naturally beautiful as this flower garden.
Scholars often have an inherent appreciation for quaint things, considering artless creations as lacking in spirit, preferring natural rustic charm. Even a pool of little fish or a couple of shrimp can enchant them.
This flower garden was no exception.
As they slowly strolled through the garden, Zhu Haoran and Governor Chen even managed to compose two decent poems, growing more pleased with themselves.
As for poetry and such, Song Chongjin always refrained from participating.
He quickly stepped back to join Zhang Hu and the other attendants, leaving Imperial Physician Du at the forefront.
Imperial Physician Du glared at his apprentice-son-in-law, gnashing his teeth in frustration! This little devil, putting an old man like him in such a tight spot! Reciting pharmacopoeias and the Tangtou Song is one thing, but poetry and elegance, how could he manage?
With no choice, he donned a smile, replying uniformly with “Good, good, wonderful!” to whatever Zhu Haoran and Governor Chen said.
Somehow, he managed to muddle through.
Song Chongjin and Zhang Hu, standing a little distance away, watched the two lords engrossed, not needing any external stimulation.
Exchanging glances, they both wiped away a cold sweat.
Seeing the lords in high spirits, Zhang Hu whispered, “I thought we would still have a chance to share a drink, but it’s a pity we’re heading back to the Capital today with the lords.”
Song Chongjin cupped his hands, “Have lunch at my humble abode this noon. However, since I’m still observing mourning, I can’t drink, but I’ll toast with tea, wishing the two lords, Brother Zhang, and all the brothers a safe journey! There will be a chance to gather in the future and drink to our hearts’ content!”
Zhang Hu, being a straightforward person, patted Song Chongjin on the shoulder, “Then it’s a deal!”
