Stay focused. ~----~ I was already bracing before the first one appeared, lurching over a fungal shelf to the north, its cap split in three places like a mouth that should never speak. Then another. And another. Each one taller than a man, fungal bodies pulsating with bioluminescent veins and trembling like they were just barely tethered to this reality. They didn't rush. They sang. BZZZ! The sound was haunting. The sound scraped at my thoughts, unraveling the seams of who I was, trying to make me into we. A single note caught in their collective. A drone in a choir of madness. One of the fungal monstrosities convulsed, spores fountaining from its mouth-holes. It collapsed like a rotten mushroom, crushed under the weight of a thousand tiny mandibles. But then, they adapted. The song changed. It thickened. Focused. And turned toward me. I felt it immediately. A spear through the soul. A desire not to die, but to dissolve. To surrender. To become something softer, kinder, quieter. It would be so easy, whispered the chorus. So easy to let go. So easy to stop fighting. The assault was broken, their harmony shattered, and they were forced to retreat in disarray, but the core Choir... its greater intelligence, its deeper hive-mind, it was still alive. Yes, some of the physical bodies were destroyed. A few Choir-singers were torn apart by aphids, rodents, and Bloom Rend. But the true threat of the Spore Choir isn't in individual units; it's in their collective song, the networked consciousness they share across long distances. That part retreated, withdrawing its local extensions before full collapse. I may have pushed back the voice that reached out to me, but that voice belonged to something far vaster. The Spore Choir has heard of me now. They'd come again. Next time, they'll sing a new song, a new song just for me and I might need to sing louder. I didn't care about that right now though. All that mattered now was my victory, and I relished and reveled in it. And then, I rested. Gods knew I needed it.
