Chapter 122: War council of the Verdant Pact

Words : 1521 Updated : Sep 24th, 2025
Three days after the Sporelink ritual, the Heartroot tree pulsed brighter than ever, visible like a beacon for miles. Vines climbed higher along ruined skyscrapers, turning steel into living fortifications. Thorned biomass roads linked outer settlements to the main enclave, and the civilian militia drilled tirelessly under Kaelin and Soren’s watchful eyes. Word of the Sporelink spread like wildfire. To civilians, it wasn’t just a bond, it was a sign that the Verdant Pact had transcended from a desperate alliance to something greater; a rising power capable of challenging even Korrath’s biomechanical empire. That night, Clayton sent out a summons. Not just to his companions but to every leader of the newly integrated factions; scavenger chiefs, ex-Ironblood captains, and elders of the Shrinekeepers. Even long-range scouts were recalled from Verdant roads for this gathering. The war council of the Verdant Pact was about to begin. The council chamber wasn’t carved from stone or steel but grown directly from the Heartroot tree itself. Bioluminescent vines formed natural seats around a sprawling root-table etched with glowing Mycoglyphs depicting the surrounding wastelands and New Chicago’s distant, iron-clad dominion. Clayton entered first, Torren beside him, their Sporelink bond radiating an unmistakable aura of strength. The civilians had already started calling them the Twin Roots, a title that spread through the Pact like wind through leaves. One by one, others filed in: Veyra, bow slung across her back, a quiver of bone arrows glowing faintly. Kaelin, leaning casually against a root column, eyes scanning everything with foxlike sharpness. Soren, silent but burning like a blade in its sheath. Lorn, serene yet resolute, vines braided through her hair like a crown. Mara, scavenger chief turned civilian leader, scars lined with determination. Rell, an ex-Ironblood captain who’d defected after Apostates slaughtered his unit. His left arm was mechanical but now overgrown with living vines. Elder Siah, Shrinekeeper of the abandoned temple they’d reclaimed two weeks ago, her staff humming with faint Genesis resonance. The atmosphere was heavy, thick with tension and anticipation. Everyone knew this wasn’t just another meeting, it was the shaping of a war that could topple a Verdant Lord. Clayton stood at the head of the table, Regalia leaning against the living wall, his green eyes reflecting the table’s glow. "We’ve bled together," he began, voice low but carrying to every corner of the chamber. "We’ve built this Pact from ashes. We’ve repelled Apostate raids, free enclaves, and reclaimed ground everyone else abandoned". "But you all know it’s not enough". He gestured to the Mycoglyph map. Threads of green light showed their dominion stretching outward, yet beyond it loomed a crimson wasteland, the vast biomechanical sprawl of New Chicago. "Korrath isn’t sending scouts anymore. Last time, he sent elites. Next time, he’ll send warbeasts and siege constructs. He’ll burn everything we’ve built if we wait". Torren stepped forward, flames licking along his Pyreaxe. "And that’s why we’re done waiting. This Pact won’t survive unless we strike first, and strike hard enough that Korrath can’t recover". Murmurs spread through the council. Mara’s scarred face twisted in thought. "You’re talking about a full invasion," she said. "You know how insane that sounds? His Apostates alone outnumber every fighter here". Clayton didn’t flinch. "Which is why we won’t fight his army head-on, not yet. Instead, we’ll dismantle his dominion piece by piece, strip him of resources, fracture his Apostates, and force him into a battle of our choosing". Kaelin smirked. "Sounds like you’re finally speaking my language". Kaelin stepped to the map, shadows coiling around his fingers as he traced crimson zones with glowing Ember dust. "Intel from out scouts paints a pretty picture," he said sarcastically. "Korrath’s dominion isn’t a city anymore, it’s a living machine". "Bio-forges churn out Apostates daily. He’s got at least six Nexus spires controlling surrounding sectors". He tapped specific points. "These spires aren’t just watchtowers. They’re conduits. Without them, Apostate control collapses, and Behemorphs revert to wild state. We take even one down, and the balance shifts fast". Elder Siah raised her staff slightly. "But striking spires will draw his Verdant Warden-class defenders. Constructs... perhaps even his true Verdant Lord body". Torren’s flame-wrapped vines curled tighter. "Then we cut our teeth on them before we face Korrath himself". Clayton placed both hands on the root-table. Verdant energy flared, projecting a holographic battlefield: New Chicago’s biomechanical towers, Apostate patrols, and the Genesis ley-lines that tied everything together. "Here’s the plan," he said. "We strike in three stages". "Stage one is sabotage and recruitment". "Small strike teams infiltrate outer Nexus spires, destroying their bio-forge conduits. Kaelin leads stealth ops, turning Apostate sub commanders and scavenger captains against Korrath with promises of freedom". "Veyra and Pact archers establish sniper nests along Verdant roads to thin Apostate patrols. Mara and the scavenger militia will fortify the northern wastelands, making Apostate raids costly". "The result? Korrath bleeds manpower and loses surveillance". "Stage two is the beast subjugation stage". "Using the expanded Aphid Network and Torren’s new pyro-root powers, I will subordinate wild Greater Crown Behemorphs roaming the western ruins". "Lorn and Shrinekeepers will convert corrupted biomass pools into healing spires, turning New Chicago’s polluted borderlands into Verdant strongholds". "Thornbrute Guardians from the backbone of a new front-line beast legion". "The result?" he smiled. "A Pact army rivaling Apostate elites, powered by Behemorphs immune to biomechanical corruption". "And lastly, stage three, the Siege of Ironbloom". Clayton’s face turned serious. "With Apostate numbers fractured and Behemorph legions secured, Pact forces will advance on New Chicago’s outer shell". "The six Nexus spires are targeted simultaneously, crippling Apostate command links. I and Torren will lead the main Verdant assault, forcing Korrath to manifest his true form". "The final clash will be a battle of Verdant Lords," Clayton’s face tightened as he scanned his audience. "My Blooming Throne versus his Nexusforge". He whispered. "The final result? If everything goes according to plan, Korrath’s dominion shattered, Apostate control broken, and a Genesis key-line liberated for the Pact". The room fell silent, tension humming like a drawn bowstring. Mara slammed her fist lightly on the table. "Sabotage and beasts I can get behind. But that siege... you’re talking about war the likes of which we haven’t seen since the early Protocol days. We’ll lose people... hundreds". Clayton met her gaze, unflinching. "We’ll lose everyone if Korrath keeps growing. Every enclave, every scavenger band, every Rootsite. His appetite his insatiable. My plan is the only way we carve a future". Rell, the ex-Ironblood, spoke for the first time, voice gruff. "If you want Apostate defections, I can help. I know their chain of command. I can turn a few sub commanders if we hit them hard enough first". Kaelin grinned. "Now that’s a traitor I can work with". Rell silently glared at him. Elder Siah tapped her staff. "And the ley-lines? If we claim even one spire, Shrinekeepers can reawaken Genesis conduits long dormant. It may grant the Pact something unexpected". Veyra finally spoke, her calm voice cutting through the heated discussion. "This isn’t just war... it’s a gamble". She took a deep breath. "But it’s also the first real chance humanity has had in decades to break a Verdant Lord’s grip. Korrath may have been human once, but that’s long ago. Now? I doubt he’s still human. So I say we take this chance". Torren stepped up beside Clayton, flames spiraling around his arm. "You’ve got your answer," he said to the council. "We fight, we bleed, but we do it together". "You saw what Sporelink did to this Pact. Imagine what happens when we all move as one". The council fell silent. One by one, leaders stood, placing hands on the root-table or raising weapons in silent assent. Mara, Rell, Elder Siah, Kaelin, Soren, Lorn... every voice aligned. Clayton raised Regalia high, roots spiraling upward to form a glowing crest above the council chamber. DING! ~----~ [Verdant Pact Resolution Passed – War Council Unanimous] [Major Campaign Unlocked: Fall of New Chicago!] [Campaign Perks: Unified Militia +25%, Beast Subjugation Rate +30%, Sabotage Efficiency +40%] ~----~ Clayton’s voice rang like thunder beneath the Heartroot canopy. "From this night forward, we’re not just survivors, scavengers, or fugitives". "We’re a storm, a Blooming Storm that no chain, no Apostate, and no Verdant Lord can hold". "We’re untamable!" He slammed his chest, riling the crowd up. Torren slammed his Pyreaxe into the living floor, a pillar of flame and biomass erupting skyward. "TO THE PACT!" he roared. "TO THE PACT!" the council answered, voices shaking the entire Rootsite. Later, as the council dispersed, Clayton and Torren stood on a high balcony overlooking the glowing, fortified city. The Heartroot tree pulsed behind them, echoing the heartbeat of a rising dominion. Torren exhaled a plume of smoke. "Think they’re ready for this?" Clayton’s gaze stayed fixed on the distant, crimson-lit horizon where New Chicago brooded like a mechanical god. "Ready or not," he said softly, "we’re marching. Because if we don’t..." The Heartseed Core thrummed violently, resonating with the looming threat ahead. "...then Korrath will finish what he started, and this time, no one will be left to fight".
