Chapter 120: The Verdant Pact

Words : 1549 Updated : Sep 24th, 2025
Three days had passed since the Apostate raid, but the echoes of battle still lingered in the Rootsite. The once-peaceful sanctuary now bore scars of molten claw strikes, collapsed walls, and charred ruins where Apostates had struck hardest. Despite the damage, the enclave thrummed with renewed life and purpose. Civilians moved with determined energy, repairing shattered biomass barricades, reinforcing spined towers, and expanding Verdant gardens to feed their growing numbers. Clayton stood atop a living bastion wall, arms crossed as he surveyed the work below. Every vine, every pulse of biomass answered to him now, reaching further than ever before. The Heartseed Core burned hot within his chest, its rhythm synced to hundreds of minds within his domain. DING! ~----~ [Population: 379] [Domain Influence: +65%] [Verdant Pulse Amplified: +15% Healing/ +20% Biomass Regen] [Aphid Network Sync: 180/200 Behemorphs] ~----~ With each day, the Rootsite evolved closer to a living fortress. Yet for all their progress, Clayton knew this was only a fraction of what he needed to face Korrath. Patience. Strength. Allies. Without those, any march on New Chicago would end in ruin. That evening, Clayton called a council meeting beneath the Heartroot tree. Bioluminescent vines coiled high above, casting emerald light across the circle where his core companions; Torren, Veyra, Lorn, Kaelin, and Soren waited. Around them, Mara, Trist, and the other emerging leaders of the civilians joined, faces marked with determination. Clayton’s voice was calm but iron-hard. "We survived the Apostate raid," he began. "Not because Korrath underestimated us, but because we finally started fighting as a Verdant domain". "But don’t think for a second that was his full strength. Despite how long has passed, that was still just a probe, nothing more". Torren nodded grimly, Pyreaxe leaning beside him. "Those Apostates were just the start. He’ll have more. He’ll have biomechanical warbeasts, even siege constructs. Marching in as we are now would be suicide". Clayton’s gaze swept the circle. "Which is why we don’t march in blind". "We prepare, not just defenses, but power. We grow this domain until New Chicago feels it breathing down its neck". Veyra adjusted her bow across her shoulder. "What about allies? The Scorched Clans might listen if we send word". "Other hidden enclaves too. If they see we’ve stood against Apostates twice and won..." She gestured toward the fortified walls. "...they might rally". Kaelin smirked from the shadows. "And if they don’t, we’ll just have to convince them the fun way". Clayton raised a hand, silencing the murmurs. "Exactly. We’ll forge alliances, build an army of our own, not just Behemorphs, but Awakened who want freedom from Korrath’s grip. But that means venturing beyond this Rootsite". Soren’s voice was low and firm. "Dangerous. Apostates control most of the wastelands between here and Chicago. The Ironbloods skulk around the ruins. We move openly... and we’ll draw fire". Clayton met his gaze steadily. "Good. Let them try. Every enemy we crush along the way strengthens us. Every survivor we bring here grows our reach". With that, the first council meeting of Clayton’s domain came to an end. ... The next morning, the preparations began. Clayton ordered the Aphid Network to split into two teams; a defensive swarm, and then the expeditionary swarm. The defensive swarm comprised 120 Behemorphs who remained to guard the Rootsite under his Verdant Lord Avatar. Thornweave Sentinels became mobile wall guardians while Flameveil Stalkers patrolled tunnels below. The expeditionary swarm comprised only 60 Behemorphs, who all followed Clayton’s humanoid form for scouting, recruitment, and alliance-forging. After all, even when trying to seek allies, a little power play was needed. Torren taught him that. Civilians trained under Torren’s brutal regimens. Hunters learned from Kaelin’s stealth tactics. Trist’s danger sense expanded into an early warning web linked to Hive-Sight. Verdant Pulse flowed stronger, making even the weakest civilians faster, healthier, less afraid. For the first time in centuries, an organized human force stood in the Forgotten Atlanta Expanse. The forgotten city was no longer as forgotten. ... Four days into their first expedition, Clayton’s party moved through the skeletal remains of a sunken highway. Crumbling cars lay rusted, half-buried in vines. Thorn Hounds scouted ahead, their eyes glowing faintly in Hive-Sight. Kaelin crouched on a tilted overpass, scanning the horizon. "Got movement east," he murmured. "Doesn’t look like Apostates. Survivors, maybe two dozen. Armed, but spooked". Torren adjusted his Pyreaxe. "Bandits or enclave remnants?" "Doesn’t matter," Clayton said. "Either way, we make them understand there’s a stronger banner to follow now". As they approached, ragged figures emerged from the ruins, weapons raised. Their leader, a scarred woman with a shardblade, shouted, "Stay back! We know Korrath’s tricks. Won’t be taken alive!" Clayton stepped forward alone, hands open but aura unmistakable. The ground itself pulsed with his presence, roots stirring beneath cracked asphalt. "I’m not Korrath," Clayton said, voice resonating with Verdant authority. "I’m the Verdant Lord of Atlanta. I’m offering something Korrath never could... safety. Freedom. A place where Apostates die screaming instead of you". Murmurs rippled through the survivors. The leader spat on the ground but didn’t lower her weapon. "Verdant Lords are all tyrants. You want dominion, not peace". Clayton’s eyes narrowed, voice dropping to a growl. "I didn’t ask for dominion. But I won’t watch humanity choke on iron chains while Verdant Lords fight over scraps". "You’ve seen Apostates. You’ve seen what Korrath does. If you think you’ll survive on your own out here..." He let his words hand, gesturing to the wasteland’s skeletal ruins. "...then you’re already dead". Veyra stepped up beside him, bow lowered but steady. "He’s telling the truth. We’ve fought Apostate raids twice now". "We’ve held a Rootsite with hundreds of civilians. We’re building more than a camp, we’re building a home". Something shifted in the survivors’ eyes. Fear dulled into desperate hope. Finally, the scarred leader lowered her blade. "Show us this home," she said quietly. "If you’re lying... we’ll kill you". Clayton almost smiled. "If I’m lying, I’ll let you". By nightfall, the survivors walked through the Rootsite gates and froze. Bioluminescent flora illuminated streets lined with living walls. Children played near healing gardens. Thornweave Sentinels patrolled silently alongside human watchmen. The Heartroot tree towered like an emerald star, its roots pulsing with life. Mara greeted the newcomers warmly, while Kael and Mira treated their wounds. Trist guided them to shelters. As Clayton watched, the system lit up again with new notifications. DING! ~----~ [Population: 404 ~ 429 ~ 451] [Domain Influence Increased: +10%] [Minor Faction Absorbed: Shardclaw Scavengers] >Passive Buff: +8% combat readiness for civilian militia. ~----~ Torren clapped Clayton’s shoulder as they watched the integration. "One faction down," he said with rare approval. "Dozens more out there". Clayton’s gaze hardened. "We’ll find them all". ... Over the next two weeks, Clayton’s expedition pushed deeper into the wastelands. They crushed Apostate scouting parties, dismantled Ironblood ambushes, and unearthed hidden enclaves once thought extinct. On Day 5, they freed forty prisoners from a biomechanical labor camp, one of Korrath’s outside outposts. On Day 9, they negotiated peace between two warring scavenger groups, merging them into the Rootsite. By Day 12, they subjugated a rogue Luminous Seed Behemorph, converting it into a Thornbrute Guardian for the Aphid Network. By Day 14, they discovered an abandoned Verdant Shrine linked to the Earthcore Nexus, granting Clayton a passive power boost. And then... DING! ~----~ [Population: 451 ~ 583 ~ 620 ~ 702] [Aphid Network Capacity: 200 ~ 250] [Verdant Domain Trait Evolved: Symbiotic Bloom] >Passive: Civilians generate passive biomass that strengthens domain defenses and accelerates Behemorph subordination. ~----~ By the third week, Clayton’s dominion stretched beyond the old Atlanta borders, connecting outlying ruins with Verdant roads and fortified biomass outposts. Scouts whispered of a new power rising in the wastelands; not just a Verdant Lord, but a ruler uniting the fractured remnants of humanity. That night, with torches flickering against the walls of the Rootsite, hundreds gathered beneath the Heartroot tree. Newly allied leaders; scavenger chiefs, enclave elders, even ex-Ironblood deserters, they all stood beside Clayton’s companions in a solemn circle. Tonight was the pact ceremony. Clayton stepped forward, Regalia slung across his back, eyes burning bright. "We were hunted like beasts," he said, voice carrying across the enclave. "Driven from our homes, fed to Apostates, crushed under the weight of Verdant tyrants. But not anymore". He gestured to the crowd, to the glowing walls beyond. "Here, we’ve proven its possible to fight back". "To build something that Genesis Protocols themselves never dreamed of... a united front. Not just one enclave or one Rootsite, but a pact. A storm ready to tear down every chain Korrath forged". He raised a hand. Roots erupted in a spiral, forming a living sigil glowing emerald in the night sky. "This is the Verdant Pact," Clayton declared. "From this day on, no Apostate will break us. No Verdant Lord will rule us. Together, we’ll march into New Chicago. Not for revenge, not for blood, but to take back the future they stole". Torren slammed his Pyreaxe into the ground. "TO THE PACT!" "TO THE PACT!" The crowd roared, voices shaking the very soil. The system answered. DING! ~----~ [Major Faction Formed: Verdant Pact] *Allied enclaves: 5 *Sub-factions: 3 (Scavengers, Ex-Ironbloods, Shrinekeepers) [Domain Influence: +90%] [Verdant Lord Title Evolved: Warden of the Pact] ~----~
