63: Sixty-three. Redemption 63: Sixty-three. Redemption An endless malice invaded from outside the door. In the summer rain season, the inside of the Detective Agency felt as cold as midwinter. Anna’s aura surged, every inch of her skin resisting the blood-like evil. Like a cat bristling its fur at a threat. Lu Li was even more affected, Mishelia’s aura unrestrained, and he, being alive, was almost the complete opposite – a natural enemy of resentful spirits. Even though his face remained calm, his body was already tense. His gaze turned to his right hand on the table—almost uncontrollably clenched into a fist. Thud—thud—thud— The knocking was heavy and slow; no one answered the door, nor was there a need to. A blood-red dress passed through the door and floated into the living room. A rich scent of blood infiltrated the Detective Agency. “Found thirty-four, killed thirty-one,” the girl casually uttered a string of numbers, her head hanging in vexation as she pinched the hem of her dress, “I’m very sorry, I don’t know why my dress became like this, and it won’t come off...” Her crimson dress seemed as though it could drip blood. She puckered her lips slightly and tilted her head, “Perhaps this signifies my sins?” Mishelia had always been a quiet and reticent girl, yet the one appearing before Lu Li now carried a cruel kind of cuteness. It was hard to say it wasn’t because she had killed too many people. “There might be big news tomorrow.” Lu Li reached for a cup of water, but his hand, trembling ceaselessly like that of a Parkinson’s patient, sent water splashing out. Silently setting the cup down, he explained to the curious Mishelia looking his way, “It’s not fear, it’s a bit uncontrollable. You know, your presence is too strong...” “Hey... I can’t hold on any longer...” Anna, beside him, gasped, her face turning red. Merely being near the resentful spirit meant that Anna had to exert all her effort to resist the aura emanating from Mishelia. Lu Li replied, “You go back into the painting first.” “Are you sure?” Anna feared Mishelia might attack Lu Li. “Otherwise, can you hold on?” Anna deflated instantly and shouted, “I can’t hold on!” transforming into a wisp of soul that slipped into the oil painting. Mishelia watched the painting with interest for a while, then her blood-colored eyes turned to Lu Li as she said softly with a laugh, “I’ve done what I needed to do, now it’s your turn to send me to hell.” “You don’t have to be like this to me, just be normal,” Lu Li replied. Mishelia was slightly taken aback by Lu Li’s response, the façade of innocence and purity gradually dispersed, reverting back to the silent and reticent girl. Lu Li took the initiative to say, “There’s no rush for now, I have a question to ask.” “What question?” Lu Li exhaled a murky breath, overcoming the immense pressure on his body, “How did you know I am an Exorcist?” “After I changed due to hatred...” Mishelia thought for a moment and pointed towards her blood-red eyes. “I felt the aura around your waist... it was repelling me.” The change Mishelia referred to was likely her becoming a resentful spirit. Hearing this, Lu Li took out his gun holster. “It’s her,” Mishelia said, her gaze falling on Lu Li’s palm, nodding her head. Lu Li asked further, “Can she hurt you?” “She might cause me some trouble.” Meaning that the Spirit-Calling Gun could only slightly affect Mishelia, and Lu Li could use this information to compare with other resentful spirits. “Shall we start now?” Mishelia urged once more. “Are you in a hurry?” Lu Li countered. Mishelia didn’t speak, just nodded. She had come to realize that after becoming a vengeful spirit, her consciousness was being called and tempted by some deeper existence within the space. After indulging in unrestrained slaughter, she was utterly incapable of resisting the call. Once clarity plunged into the abyss, what remained of this body would be only instinct—the instinct brimming with malice towards the living. “It’s not time yet, there’s still something you haven’t done.” Lu Li gently shook his head, temporarily rejecting her. “What?” Mishelia tilted her head, the red glow in her eyes flickering. ... “Why... did you bring me here.” Under the gloomy sky, the patchy red exterior walls silently told the stories of the first settlers who had lived here. A trace of struggle appeared on Mishelia’s face as she stopped in front of the Long House. Lu Li, having entered the dim corridor, stopped and looked back at her: “You have to see them eventually, are you willing to just walk away?” Mishelia fell silent, at this moment she finally bore a few shadows of her life before. “Come on, see them one last time.” Lu Li said, taking the steps up the stairs. Mishelia lowered her head and followed, floating into the corridor. On the second floor of the Long House, before a crude and worn wooden door, Lu Li raised his hand to knock. Thump, thump, thump—— Seconds later, a muffled voice and footsteps responded from behind the door. Click—— The door opened, and a middle-aged man in a suit stepped out from behind it. He paused, then nodded to Lu Li as a gesture of recognition, and said goodbye to the middle-aged people behind him before descending the stairs and leaving. “May I ask who you are...” The middle-aged man looked at Lu Li by the door, scrutinizing him. “Hello, I am Mishelia’s professor.” “Professor?” Mishelia’s father’s eyes immediately filled with hostility, grasping the doorknob: “Do you know the man who just left?” “I don’t.” “That was the principal of your academy.” “...Is that so.” Lu Li nodded without a hint of embarrassment and turned back to say, “I intended to not disturb them, but I encountered a little problem here, so...” Without needing him to explain further, Mishelia had already materialized, her eyes now a bloodthirsty red... but with a tinge of sorrow. Mishelia’s father and the wife who walked in after were instantly stunned. Lu Li didn’t really want to witness this scene; he moved to the side and entered the room, heading straight for the balcony. The rain had stopped for the moment, but the sky was still overcast. Leaning on the windowsill, Lu Li breathed in the fresh air calmly. After about fifteen minutes, a figure appeared beside him. “Is everything said and done?” Lu Li asked without turning his head. “Mmm... I should go now.” The voice beside him gradually grew colder, a bone-chilling coldness swirling around Lu Li: “But before I go, I need to kill you—” Lu Li suddenly shook his head lightly, tilting his head to look directly at Mishelia: “Is that really how you want to see me, scared?” “Pfft...” Suddenly, Mishelia’s smile bloomed, as bright as sunshine breaking through rain clouds. She pursed her lips, bowed deeply with a bend in her eyes: “Thank you.” “It’s not me you should thank, but your own steadfast heart.” Lu Li turned his gaze back to the sky. Perhaps it was a coincidence, or perhaps it was fate, but at that moment, the sky cleared. A hole tore through the clouds, and the afternoon sunlight streamed down in rays, creating a rainbow in the still-rainy sky of Belfast. This was the first time Lu Li had seen the sunlight in this world; it was nothing special. Mishelia leaned close to Lu Li, mimicking his gaze towards the sky: “I’ve always been studying, I never realized the sky could be so beautiful.” “Then take a few more looks,” Lu Li said, glancing sideways. The girl beside him had already disappeared without a trace.
