35: 35. Mrs. Slav’s Love Letter 35: 35. Mrs. Slav’s Love Letter “Clip-clopping, clip-clopping, clip-clopping...” The unique smell of the early morning mixed with the fishy scent drifting from the harbor, wafting in through the window, fluttering the curtains and entering the living room of the Detective Agency. Oliver shrank into a corner of the sofa, trembling nonstop. A few books he had bought on his way here lay beside him. “Anna, this is Oliver. Oliver, this is Anna,” Lu Li introduced them to each other. “Hello, I am Anna.” Anna delicately lifted her skirt, curtsying with noble etiquette. In front of strangers she was meeting for the first time, Anna maintained a certain restraint, of course, with the exception of Lu Li. “Clip-clopping, clip-clopping, clip-clopping...” Oliver’s shaking intensified even more, his cheeks trembling incessantly. Anna drifted back from Oliver’s side to behind Lu Li, who let out a sigh of relief and stumbled over his words, “So this Miss Ghost... is now part of our Detective Agency?” “I guess you could say that,” Lu Li replied without looking up. He opened the book to the title page, but his brows gradually furrowed. After quickly flipping through a few pages, he turned the book around to show Oliver, “What is this?” “It’s ‘The Growth History of the Earlen Peninsula Duchy.'” Oliver craned his neck back and said. He couldn’t read, but that didn’t stop him from counting the number of characters on it. One, two, three, four, five... Nine characters, no mistake, and the bookstore owner had said it was this book, too. “Did anyone tell you...” Lu Li closed the book and threw it on the dining table. “This book is a long novel.” “Uh... what do you mean?” The word was beyond Oliver’s comprehension. “It means fantasy literature,” Anna said casually from behind Lu Li, looking over his shoulder, “Everything in it is made-up.” Rustle, rustle, rustle— Oliver scratched his head, seeming to understand but also not really. Lu Li turned his attention to the remaining books, ‘My Love Story with Baron Joseph,’ ‘One Hundred Fables,’ ‘Rhodest Port Customs,’ ‘Martin and the Dog.’ He didn’t think that he would find anything he needed in these books. “Is this all there is?” Still, Lu Li flipped through a few pages, just to be sure there was no knowledge within that might be of use to him, and finally let it go. Possibly because of Anna, Oliver was a lot more polite to his boss, and said in a low voice, “The bookstore owner said that all the books you wanted were sold out.” “What about the other bookstores?” “The same, none of them sell those historical and geographical books anymore.” “Sold out... library burned down... such a coincidence?” Lu Li murmured, turning his head to ask Anna, “Do you remember the general history?” Anna, of noble birth, was often exposed to various books and had been taught by teachers. “I can’t remember...” Anna said somewhat sheepishly, “After waking up, I forgot a lot of unimportant memories...” “Is that so.” Lu Li nodded, but didn’t give up hope. There were schools in this world, several in Belfast alone, and they couldn’t possibly spend all day teaching fairy tales. “Speaking of which, I seem to recall something... Oliver scrambled to gather a few books, but an envelope fluttered down from between them. “What’s this?” Lu Li picked up the envelope that had fallen on the table. “Uh...” Oliver glanced at Anna guiltily, his lips dry, “This is from Mrs. Slav... written to you. Well, I’m off to return the books, Mr. Luli, Miss Anna, goodbye!” After finishing his words, Oliver hurriedly slipped away, leaving the Detective Agency, On the other side, Lu Li withdrew his gaze and, under Anna’s curious look, opened the envelope to take out a piece of leather paper sprayed with perfume and unfolded it.
