The carriage gradually stopped in front of the Duke Zhen’s Mansion. After Xingxing got off the carriage, she assisted Su Jin down.
Seeing her enter, the servant respectfully said, "The Eldest Young Madam has returned."
"The Minister of War’s wife and Lady Wu’an are here and have been waiting for you for half a day," the servant said.
Waiting for her for half a day?
Yesterday, Mr. Liu passed on the decree; it was unavoidable for them to wait for her return.
Yet, was it necessary for the Minister of War’s wife and the others to wait?
Wouldn’t it be enough to bring the silver note?
Were they afraid the Duke’s Mansion would misappropriate those three thousand taels?
Su Jin stepped into the Duke Mansion.
Seeing Manager Li, Xingxing asked, "Has the land deed been sent from the palace?"
"It has been delivered," Manager Li replied.
"Given to the Eldest Young Master."
Su Jin nodded.
Before reaching the second gate, she saw a maid leading an Imperial Physician out.
The Imperial Physician looked at Su Jin with fear in his eyes.
Su Jin touched her face with her hand.
Was she really so fierce?
She didn’t know who in the Duke’s Mansion was sick again; she wasn’t even around, so it should have nothing to do with her.
Su Jin didn’t pay much attention to this matter.
She continued to walk forward.
Just as she entered the second gate, the maid said, "The Old Madam asked the Eldest Young Madam to visit Qihao Hall once she returned."
"I understand."
Inside Qihao Hall.
The Old Madam sat on the Arhat Couch, with Princess Nanzhang and the Second Madam sitting on either side.
The Third Madam was not present.
In the main hall were also two unfamiliar ladies, dignified and graceful.
Su Jin stepped forward and bowed to greet the Old Madam.
"Why did the Old Madam call for Su Jin? Is there something she wishes to discuss?" Su Jin asked.
The Old Madam stared at her.
She didn’t believe Su Jin didn’t know why she was summoned!
The Old Madam fiddled with the Buddha beads in her hand, her face filled with suppressed anger.
"Saving a life is a merit greater than building a seven-story pagoda. It’s good that you saved the Heir of Wu’an Bo."
"But how could you openly ask for gratitude!" The Old Madam’s voice was cold.
Su Jin frowned slightly.
Even if she was to be reprimanded, it shouldn’t be in front of outsiders.
Was this meant to set an example with her?
Su Jin glanced at the Minister of War’s wife, "I thought you came to express gratitude, but it seems you’re here to complain to the Old Madam."
The Minister of War’s wife shivered slightly.
"No, no...,"
"We came to express our thanks," the Minister of War’s wife hastily said.
She quickly got up, saying, "It’s getting late; I should return to the mansion."
She placed the silver note she was carrying down, saying, "To thank the Eldest Young Madam of Duke Zhen’s Mansion for saving my son’s life, a small token of appreciation, though inadequate."
After placing down the silver note, she bid farewell to the Old Madam and Princess Nanzhang.
Her actions were smooth, and her departure swift.
Afraid that if she delayed another moment, it’d end in disaster.
Marchioness Yongning was indeed wise, putting down the silver note and leaving immediately; why did they linger unnecessarily?
It’s clear that the Eldest Young Madam of Duke Zhen’s Mansion is not afraid of the Old Madam and Princess Nanzhang.
The Second Madam stood up, saying, "Let me see them off."
Then, only the Old Madam and Princess Nanzhang remained in the main hall.
Xingxing looked at the silver note on the tea table, walked over, and picked it up.
"They actually gave an extra thousand taels," Xingxing said happily.
The Old Madam’s face turned blue with anger.
"Do you not understand the principle of doing good without expecting repayment!" Princess Nanzhang scolded.
"I did not seek repayment," Su Jin said blandly.
"Not at all?!" Princess Nanzhang had never seen someone lie so blatantly with their eyes wide open.
She pointed to the silver note in Xingxing’s hand, "Then what is this?!"
"This is a silver note," Su Jin answered earnestly.
"I saved them for the sake of the silver," Su Jin replied.
Princess Nanzhang choked.
Su Jin looked at her, "It’s merely a transaction, nothing to do with repayment."
"Has Duke Chong’s Mansion sent a silver note?" Su Jin asked.
No one responded.
She looked towards the maid.
"No," the maid shook her head.
"Marchioness Yongning came with a four thousand taels silver note," the maid said, voice trembling.
Su Jin looked at Princess Nanzhang, "Duke Chong’s Mansion hasn’t sent it. In regard to mother, I bear no expectation of reward. The three thousand taels due from Duke Chong’s Mansion, I won’t collect, and hope Duke Chong’s Mansion will know to repay gratitude."
"You!" Princess Nanzhang gritted her teeth in anger.
Xie Jinyu glared at Su Jin, "In the four thousand taels from Marchioness Yongning, three thousand were to cover for Duke Chong’s Mansion!"
"So what?" Su Jin asked.
Xie Jinyu’s eyes were fixed on Su Jin.
She didn’t speak.
Because she didn’t know what to say.
Su Jin inquired, "Should I return the three thousand taels to Duke Chong’s Mansion, or should Duke Chong’s Mansion not feel obliged to repay me in the future?"
"Since you’ve married into Duke Zhen’s Mansion, you should consider the reputation of Duke Zhen’s Mansion carefully!"
"I don’t want to go out and have people think my Duke Zhen’s Mansion has ulterior motives when rescuing others!" Xie Jinyu exclaimed coldly.
Su Jin’s lips curled into a slight smile.
"You are you, and I am I," Su Jin said.
The Old Madam coldly replied, "You are already the Eldest Young Madam of my Duke Zhen’s Mansion!"
"As a member of Duke Zhen’s Mansion, you must adhere to our rules!"
"Go kneel in the Buddhist Hall for three hours and reflect properly!" the Old Madam said coldly.
Xie Jinyu looked at her with glee at her misfortune.
Su Jin said, "Isn’t it just kneeling as punishment? I’ll kneel."
"But before I kneel, there’s one thing I need to clarify first."
"The matter of someone from Duke Zhen’s Mansion falsely using my name to obtain antidiarrheal medicine from Marquis Dongxiang’s Mansion, I wonder how Duke Zhen’s Mansion’s family law deals with that?" Su Jin asked coldly.
Xie Jinyu glared at Su Jin, "It was your Dongxiang Marquis Mansion that falsely used others’ names first!"
Su Jin looked at her, "What matter does the young lady speak of?"
Xie Jinyu opened her mouth, about to speak.
Princess Nanzhang stopped her, "Yuyu!"
Xie Jinyu bit her lips tightly, almost falling into the trap.
Su Jin glanced at Princess Nanzhang, "If you think my Dongxiang Marquis Mansion also did something under false pretenses, let’s clarify it before the Emperor."
"Hmm, if you think the Emperor will be biased towards me, then speak before the Empress Dowager."
She was just so agreeable.
Princess Nanzhang ground her teeth in hatred.
Su Jin looked at the maid, "And the four thousand taels of silver note?"
The maid looked towards the Old Madam.
The Old Madam did not speak.
"Eldest Young Madam, please wait a moment, I will fetch it," Mrs. Wang said.
Soon, Mrs. Wang returned with the four thousand taels silver note.
Su Jin received the silver note and formally took leave.
Leaving Qihao Hall, Xingxing said, "Why didn’t you pursue the matter to the end, Miss?"
"Next time, if anyone insists on making me kneel as punishment, I’ll pursue it to the end," Su Jin laughed.
"Miss is really clever. Then someone will keep us company," Xingxing said joyfully.
"...."
The Third Madam walked over, just in time to hear Su Jin say this, and clenched her hand a bit tighter.
She stepped into the room, her face filled with anger.
"I heard from a maid that the third house consulted an Imperial Physician, who is unwell?" the Old Madam asked.
The Third Madam waved her hand.
The maids all withdrew.
"Even the eldest young lady should leave," the Third Madam said.
Xie Jinyu pouted and left.
Once everyone had left, the Third Madam spoke, "It’s the master who is unwell."
The Old Madam’s heart tightened.
"What happened?" she asked urgently.
The Third Madam’s face was filled with resentment, "Isn’t it the ’antidiarrheal medicine’ that caused it? The master, he, he..."
"What exactly happened to him?"
"You’re speaking in riddles, hurry and tell me!" The Old Madam was anxious, her temper flaring.
"The master... he’s become impotent!" The Third Madam began to weep.
