This was probably just the tip of the iceberg—no wonder it was the grim darkness of the 41st millennium. Among the dozen or so messages he received, every single one was a distress signal—none of them were normal. "How is it, Lord Rhodes? Were you able to connect with other Astropaths?" The Canoness, seeing Rhodes awaken, asked anxiously. "Yes! I was indeed able to connect and saw the golden radiance generated by the Astronomican. I also observed other Astropaths within it. As soon as I entered, I received over a dozen messages—all of them distress signals from various parts of the Imperium. One of them even came from the Deathwatch." Rhodes relayed all the information he had received. "The Imperium is under constant assault from the forces of Chaos, vile Xenos, and treacherous heretics," the Canoness sighed. As a Battle Sister, she understood the situation well. Some worlds lived in peaceful paradise, while others were engulfed in the flames of war. "I'm particularly concerned about the Deathwatch," said Captain Dres. "The Deathwatch is a highly specialized force composed of elite battle-brothers from various Space Marine Chapters. If they are sending out a distress signal during combat, it must be a matter of extreme importance." Typically, if any Space Marine Chapter received a distress call from the Deathwatch, they would immediately move to assist, as the Deathwatch only faced the most dangerous threats—primarily the deadliest Xenos. "Now, tell me how to send a message. I can receive transmissions, but I don't seem to know how to send one," Rhodes said. The priority now was to send out a distress call to the Imperium. Learning how to communicate within the psychic network was crucial—he couldn't just passively receive messages. "Lord Rhodes, simply focus your mind and transmit your message to them. Alternatively, you can broadcast it within a 100-light-year radius—someone will receive it. Send it in my name—I am Captain Dres of the 2nd Company of the Polar Warriors. If my Chapter or any other Ultramarines successor Chapter receives it, they will surely respond," Captain Dres instructed. Rhodes nodded and once again immersed his mind into the Astronomican-protected warp space. He then attempted to project his thoughts and broadcast a distress signal from his current location on the agri-world. ["Biel Agri-World under Tyranid invasion. Swarm repelled. Captain Dres of the 2nd Company of the Polar Warriors requesting Chapter fleet support."] Rhodes sent out a brief message. While he was connected to the Astronomican, more distress signals flooded in—dozens this time. There was no helping it—Rhodes' golden light point was far too dazzling! Xenos entities would never enter this space, as it was the Emperor's domain. So, when such a brilliant light appeared, many Astropaths clung to it like a lifeline. ["I am currently under the employ of Captain Dres of the Polar Warriors' 2nd Company. We have just repelled a small Tyranid incursion here and are awaiting Imperial Navy reinforcements. Apologies, but I am unable to assist you."] Rhodes reluctantly sent a message in reply to the Deathwatch Chaplain. ["You! You are a new Librarian of the Polar Warriors? Or the 2nd Company's Chaplain?"] The Deathwatch Chaplain sounded surprised. ["My identity is classified, Chaplain. You do not have clearance to inquire about me. Due to certain circumstances, I am currently stranded on this planet and have temporarily assisted the Polar Warriors in repelling a Tyranid attack."] Rhodes replied curtly. Do I need to explain myself? Just telling you that you don't have clearance should be enough. ["My apologies, my Lord. I should not have pried into Imperial secrets. I once served in the Polar Warriors myself. I joined the Deathwatch over 100 years ago—back then, Dres was still a recruit."] The Deathwatch Chaplain responded. Oh? A familiar face? ["Tell me your name. I will confirm with Captain Drez."] ["I am Magro. Dres should remember me."] Rhodes sent a standby signal and disconnected from the Astronomican. "Captain Dres, I received a distress signal from the Deathwatch. The sender claims to have once been a Chaplain of the Polar Warriors before joining the Deathwatch over a hundred years ago. His name is Magro." "Magro? I remember him. Back then, I had only been in service for a few decades. Chaplain Magro even conducted my mental fortitude training. He left for the Deathwatch 130 years ago." Dres nodded as he spoke. "It seems they are in serious trouble. Should I ask for more details?" "Please do, Lord Rhodes. He is my battle-brother—a predecessor of ours." Dres requested. Rhodes nodded and reconnected to the Astronomican. ["I have confirmed with Dres. Chaplain Magro, you did indeed serve with the Polar Warriors 130 years ago. Can you tell me what is happening on your end?"] ["My Lord! We are on an extremely critical mission. There are over fifty Tyranid hive ships here. This is a massive Hive World. If it falls to the Tyranids, the number of hive ships will more than double, directly threatening several nearby sectors. If possible, please help us call for reinforcements."] Rhodes ignored everything else and fixated on one thing—fifty Tyranid hive ships. Cough. Damn it! That's over a million Thrones in the bounty! And given how quickly he received the signal... that meant the battlefield was close.
