Tommy Taylor wisely excused himself. Vera Wave had already met him once yesterday, so when she saw him appear again, her imagination immediately ran wild. She certainly didn’t think Kris Cooper was some local tyrant; she just assumed the car she’d seen yesterday was Tommy’s and, consequently, naturally took Tommy for the person in charge here. No wonder this guy became a leader as soon as he went straight; so, there was someone backing him... no, someone *behind* him! I’ve heard of women gaining status through men, but this is the first time I’ve seen a man climb the ladder using another man. Indeed, Isla Hawskin was right; in this day and age, looks are everything. She cast a sideways glance at Kris Cooper, seated in his chair. To get where he was, she wondered how many times his ’chrysanthemum’ must have been ravaged. Sigh, relying on your body to get ahead is truly an art! COUGH! Seeing the young woman’s eyes darting about, lost in who-knew-what thoughts, Kris Cooper cleared his throat lightly. Vera snapped out of the tawdry drama she’d been imagining and quickly flashed him a smile. "Um... Manager Kris, shall we start the interview then?" "The interview, of course, needs to proceed, but..." Kris Cooper tapped her ID card with his finger. "Vera, before the interview, shouldn’t we settle our bill first, hmm?!" "Manager Kris," Vera began, somewhat awkwardly, "you know... I... I really don’t have the money right now." "So..." Kris Cooper narrowed his eyes slightly. "You plan to default on your debt, is that it?" "That’s really not it! I absolutely have no such intention!" Vera immediately waved her hands. "I only took my ID card back for the interview. I absolutely won’t short you a single penny of your money. I... I swear to heaven." TSK! Kris Cooper curled his lip. "Can oaths be used as money? If they could, I’d make a million of them a day." Aren’t you afraid your mouth will get tired to death! Vera grumbled inwardly, then skirted around the desk, walked over, and took hold of his arm, speaking ingratiatingly. "I know, I was wrong. You’re a magnanimous person; a great man like you is forgiving. Good people are rewarded... Just forgive me this once... Look, aren’t I here for the interview now? If you let me pass the interview, then I’ll be right under your watchful eye, unable to run even if I wanted to. Don’t you think so?" Glancing sideways at the young woman’s pitifully ingratiating look, Kris Cooper raised an eyebrow slightly. "That won’t do. Who can guarantee you won’t run off again?" "My... my ID card is still in your hands, isn’t it? I can’t run even if I want to, right? Besides... isn’t there also the employment contract? Once you sign a contract with me, I’ll be even less able to run off, right?" She had no intention of defaulting on the debt, so she didn’t mind working in the same company as him.
