At this moment, uncle seemed a bit evasive, stammering, "I was drinking with a friend, yes, drinking. Who would’ve thought that old woman would take sleeping pills at home! I was drinking at the time, yes, drinking."
The policeman glanced at him, "Time, place, friend’s name."
"It started yesterday afternoon until this morning. I was with a friend, named Xu An. The place was a restaurant, where else would you drink? Of course, it was a restaurant!"
Even at this point, the uncle was still dodging the police’s questions.
The policeman noted down what he said and advised him, "I advise you to tell the truth, every word you say now is evidence, and if you falsify evidence, you could be sentenced."
Hearing the word ’sentence,’ uncle panicked a bit, tightly grabbing the policeman’s sleeve, "This... this, officer, don’t rush, I’ll tell the truth, the truth."
"I really went drinking with a friend yesterday."
Seeing that he still wasn’t telling the truth, the policeman made a gesture as if to stand up. Uncle hurriedly pulled on the policeman’s sleeve,
"Officer, officer, don’t rush, I haven’t finished yet."
The policeman sat back down again.
"Xu An and I drank for almost two hours and were preparing to go home. Because that old woman told me in the morning to come back early, she had something to tell me. I didn’t take it seriously at the time. So after drinking, we went to the bathhouse."
The policeman looked up at him.
Uncle chuckled awkwardly, continuing, "The massage girls there are so lovely! Each prettier than the other. So, Xu An and I stayed there all afternoon. I was planning to go home in the evening, but Xu An insisted on pulling me to go sing karaoke. Usually, he treats me, and this time I thought, since there’s nothing to do at home, I went with him."
At this point, uncle paused, and his face suddenly turned a bit unpleasant.
"I didn’t expect the place we went to this time was for that kind of stuff! I really didn’t know, and I didn’t do drugs with them, I was just waiting for Xu An. I went with him in his car, it was so far, I didn’t want to spend money on a cab."
"Drugs?" The policeman questioned.
Uncle nodded repeatedly, "Yes, they tried to give me some but I refused, too expensive, a pill for a thousand bucks!"
"..." Zhou Qing was speechless, seems like being poor can sometimes save a life.
"Don’t sidetrack, continue!" The policeman knocked on the hard clipboard in his hand, warning. "Where is the karaoke place you mentioned?"
"I don’t know either, drank quite a bit at the time, drowsy in the car, but I remember there was a character ’Tian’ in the name, and the karaoke place was huge, totally different from the places before, really grand!"
"Tian... Heavenly Emperor Club?" the policeman questioned.
"Yes! That’s the name. The sign was really bright!"
The policeman didn’t respond, seriously writing down the name.
"Anything else you haven’t stated?"
Uncle thought carefully and confirmed there wasn’t anything else, "No, last night Xu An was hanging out with them, I drank a bit more, got sleepy and fell asleep. In the morning, seeing they hadn’t woken up, I came back by myself. Damn far, walked for two hours."
Ignoring his complaints, the policeman turned to Zhou Qing, "What about you, anything to tell us? We checked your aunt’s call records and found that she called you before taking the pills."
Zhou Qing nodded, "Yes, aunt called me home, and we talked for a while."
"About what?"
Zhou Qing found it hard to speak, how should he say it? Say that he’s been a third party, been retaliated by someone’s wife? Or that he fancies a man who’s already married? He couldn’t bring himself to say it.
The policeman knocked on the clipboard once more, his tone warning, "Hurry up and talk! Tell the truth!"
Left with no choice, Zhou Qing had to recount the events. Upon hearing this, his uncle immediately distanced himself.
"Your Old Zhou Family is really disgusting, one drug addict suicide, one mentally ill suicide from taking pills, and another nauseating homosexual! Ugh!"
"Shut up! Who are you to talk? You get drunk and abuse my aunt, all the injuries on her body are from your hits!" Saying this, Zhou Qing angrily stepped forward wanting to grab his uncle.
Seeing this, the policeman hurriedly pulled the two apart, saying to Zhou Qing’s uncle, "Behave! You’re coming with us for a bit too!"
Uncle panicked, "Officer! I didn’t kill anyone! I didn’t do drugs! Just like drinking a bit, not enough to arrest me, right?"
"You’re suspected of premeditated assault on the deceased, leading to her depression and suicide. Whether you’re guilty or not, you need to come back with us for investigation."
After saying this, the policeman turned to Zhou Qing again, "And you, come back with us too, to make a statement."
Zhou Qing had no objections. Going back to the police station might be better than back to school, at least he wouldn’t have to avoid the rumors.
Thus, Zhou Qing and his uncle were both taken back to the police station.
Actually, there was nothing much to investigate. The deceased often suffered domestic violence, causing depression, ultimately committing suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills due to the condition worsening.
Uncle was detained for three months, while Zhou Qing was released after giving his statement. On the way to the police station, many thoughts swirled in his mind.
His sister had been gone for more than half a year; now, his aunt was gone too. He thought he had found true love, but the man was just a liar. He couldn’t go back to school, so it was best to leave this city and start anew.
Half a month later, Zhou Qing arranged his aunt’s ashes and left the cemetery. In the half-month since his aunt’s death, Zhou Qing seemed to have grown up all of a sudden.
When his sister died, he still had his aunt by his side. Now that his aunt was gone too, he would have to shoulder life’s burdens alone.
He took out a bank card from his pocket, specially made by that man for him, depositing pocket money for him every day. Previously, he barely touched the money that wasn’t necessary. Now, he could use it to start a new life.
This money could be considered compensation for the emotional distress caused by that man.
Zhou Qing went back to school, applied for withdrawal. The school quickly agreed, since Zhou Qing’s situation had already led to many student losses, and now he took the initiative to withdraw, they naturally agreed readily.
In just a little over an hour, all formalities were completed. Zhou Qing didn’t pack much luggage, only taking what his aunt and sister left for him. Packing a small suitcase, Zhou Qing dragged it and embarked on the road to a new city.
His first destination was Jade City because his sister had mentioned that the cherry blossoms in Jade City were the most beautiful. It was cherry blossom season now, and he wanted to see them for her.
Although after Zhou Xue’s death, he spoke with disdain and dislike, but after all, she was the sister who grew up with him, how could there be no feelings at all?
He bought a ticket to Jade City at the bus station, sat on the bus, still feeling hopeful for future life.
Half an hour later, the bus started, carrying this sixteen-year-old boy full of hope for a new life, heading towards Jade City.
