Chu Yin’s face was ashen, tears streaming, her breathing labored as she cried and hugged Zhan Hui. Zhan Hui, hugged by Chu Yin, stood there perplexed and frozen, then suddenly pushed her away. Chu Yin looked at Zhan Hui, puzzled, feeling a sense of loss wash over her. Zhan Hui had actually pushed her away with disgust! “Wait!” Zhan Hui led Chu Yin to a stream, sitting down on a stump. He knelt down, noticing her trousers beginning to soak with blood, and tore her pant leg open. Chu Yin’s cheeks flushed instantly, she snapped, “What are you doing?” Zhan Hui, seeing her pale leg, momentarily blushed, then lifted her leg up in his arms. Chu Yin startled, then her leg was covered by Zhan Hui’s lips as he began to suck the blood from her wound. Zhan Hui spit out several mouthfuls of dark red blood, only stopping when the blood turned fresh red, then he lowered her leg. Noticing Chu Yin’s cheeks were still flushed, Zhan Hui remembered, flustered, that he had forgotten propriety between men and women. Zhan Hui wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, scooped water from the river to rinse and spit out while explaining, “You were bitten by a venomous snake, I have offended you just now!” Chu Yin, whose maternal family comes from a lineage of medical expertise, naturally knew that Zhan Hui was trying to suck out the poison from her blood. Zhan Hui, oblivious to why Chu Yin was angry, hurriedly offered, “Let me carry you on my back!” “No need!” Chu Yin stubbornly continued forward, enduring the pain. “I haven’t asked you yet, why did you come here?” Zhan Hui worriedly watched Chu Yin limp, really wanting to carry her, but fearing to upset her even more, he dared not to do so. Chu Yin looked back at Zhan Hui with a cold gaze, “I came to see Zhan Lan.” “Zhan Lan?” Zhan Hui was puzzled. Wasn’t Zhan Lan in Ding’an City? Chu Yin jumped out of the carriage, with a firm tone, “Take me to Lianbian City, I’m not going back to Ding’an City!” After speaking, she began to cry pitifully, “If you won’t take me, I will beg my way back to Lian’an City!” The two guards looked at the young girl with her face streaked with tears, finding it hard to bear. They exchanged glances, and one of them, the taller one, said, “Alright, Miss, we’ll take you to Lianbian City!” Having got the answer she wanted, Chu Yin instantly stopped crying and got back into the carriage. ... Zhan Lan had been busy in Lian’an City the whole time; first, she gathered information on the topography of the border and drew maps. Then, she inquired about the local weather and geological characteristics from the people. Suddenly, a noisy tumult broke out, and the sound of horse hooves rapidly approached. Officials from the official army made way, and a carriage stopped in front of the house she rented. Zhan Lan put away the map in her hands and went to the door. Before she could ask the newcomer’s intention, she was embraced in a full hug. “Zhan Lan, you’re all right, that’s wonderful!” Chu Yin cried as though she was at a funeral. The two of them walked into the courtyard. Zhan Lan poured a cup of tea for Chu Yin and listened to her dangerous experiences along the way, frowning, “You girl, you’re really courting death!” Chu Yin hung her head, not daring to retort, and ate some water chestnut cake from the table. I am impressed, indeed!” Chu Yin’s face flushed with embarrassment at Zhan Lan’s teasing words, and she responded with a question instead of an answer, “You, you, you... why did you come to Lianbian City?” Zhan Lan replied with a question of her own instead of answering, “Who was it that rescued you in the mountain hollow and took you to Fengyu Pass? Was that person from the court?”
