Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Start Tearing!
Zhan Xuerou never expected that Zhan Lan would dare to speak to her in such a rude and impolite manner.
She angrily rebuked: "Zhan Lan, you are becoming more and more arrogant, relying on being a student of the Great Scholar, treating people of the General Mansion as if they are beneath you! You ungrateful thing!"
This was also the first time Zhan Xuerou directly confronted Zhan Lan and tore off all pretenses.
Zhan Lan no longer wanted to even maintain a facade of cordiality.
Seeing Zhan Xuerou's fingers turning white and her breathing rapid, Zhan Lan knew that Zhan Xuerou was furious.
Zhan Lan said word by word: "Respect is mutual, if you don't want to save face, why should I spare my words!"
"Also, stop being hypocritical; what you've done behind the scenes, both you and I know very well."
"Slut!" Zhan Xuerou, trembling all over with anger, managed to spit out these words despite her learned background, feeling instantly more relieved.
Zhan Xuerou's two maidservants ran over from not too far away, glaring angrily at Zhan Lan.
Chunhua yelled with hands on her hips: "Zhan Lan! How dare you treat the legitimate daughter like this!"
"What did you say to make the legitimate daughter so upset!" Qiuyue stared coldly at Zhan Lan.
Zhan Lan clicked her tongue in wonder, even the maidservants dared to scold her loudly.
This showed the fundamental disrespect they had for her.
Now that there were no outsiders, they, along with Zhan Xuerou, no longer hid their true selves.
In public, they addressed her as Sister Lan, but privately, they showed their true colors much earlier than in their past lives.
In the past, she had to endure it, unknowing of the truth, all for her mother Mrs. Li.
But now, she no longer wanted to endure such humiliation.
Zhan Lan kicked, and the two maidservants both kneeled on the ground, grimacing in pain.
"What are you doing!" Zhan Xuerou's pupils dilated, and she stepped back.
Zhan Lan placed her hands on the maidservants trying to get up and spoke: "If you have anything to say, say it while kneeling!"
The two maidservants struggled to get up, but they were unable to move.
"Ah, it hurts, it hurts!"
"Let go, Miss Zhan Lan!"
Zhan Xuerou shouted towards a nearby place: "Someone come, teach Zhan Lan a lesson for me!"
No matter what, she was the legitimate daughter of the General Mansion, how could she let Zhan Lan bully her servants like this.
Two Protectors rushed over, and Zhan Lan lazily let go of Chunhua and Qiuyue, and nonchalantly took Dugu Yan onto her own carriage.
The two Protectors wanted to approach, but Zhan Lan looked back and warned: "If any of you want to cross hands with me, I'm more than willing to oblige!"
The legs of the two Protectors shivered together.
However, Zhan Lan was actually looking forward to her making a move.
After washing up, Zhan Lan saw Dugu Yan sneakily holding a small cloth bag, appearing to count something.
"What are you looking at?" Zhan Lan flicked her hair, and some droplets splashed onto Dugu Yan's face, making her quickly hide the small cloth bag.
Zhan Lan asked while wiping her hair, "What's that, a silver note?"
Dugu Yan smiled awkwardly, "These are the silver notes that Huang Chizhong, the corrupt officer, took from our house. It's my father's life savings; I just secretly took them back."
"Oh, do you need silver?" Zhan Lan casually sat down, cradling Little Black, who had just finished a bowl of white rice and meat porridge, in her arms. Little Black squinted, purring comfortably.
Its paws were healing quickly and it could now slowly walk.
Dugu Yan lowered her head, "It's useful, but the silver I have is still not enough!"
Zhan Lan's eyes darkened, "Then I'll go earn some silver, and you help by sleeping in my bed."
Dugu Yan looked at Zhan Lan skeptically, as Zhan Lan placed Little Black in its nest and put on a black hooded cloak.
"You lock the door here, and if the lady comes, just say I've gone to bed."
Dugu Yan, still a bit confused, "How will you earn the silver by going out? Is it safe? Should I also..."
Zhan Lan rubbed Dugu Yan's naturally curly hair, "No need, I'll be fortune-telling, the kind that requires confidentiality."
Dugu Yan looked at Zhan Lan doubtfully, fortune-telling in the middle of the night?
Zhan Lan was indeed an amusing person, and so were the people employing her!
"Then you must— oh, I mean, come back soon..." Dugu Yan's expression turned a bit unnatural and her cheeks reddened.
Zhan Lan smiled, then soothed, "Don't worry."
Dugu Yan closed the door from inside the room.
As Zhan Lan passed by Madam Li's room, her eyes instantly turned cold.
How could Madam Li wake up so quickly?
Since her rebirth, Zhan Lan had been putting a certain amount of sleeping medicine in Madam Li's tea every night.
To avoid delaying her matters!
Xiao Tao was a carefree maid, sleeping deeply and snoring softly.
What Zhan Lan told Dugu Yan earlier was merely to avoid letting her take risks together.
Zhan Lan skillfully climbed over the wall, quietly blending into the crowd; a quarter of an hour later, she reached a dark alley.
The alley was eerily quiet, illuminated only by the cold, white light of the moon above.
Suddenly, Zhan Lan kicked something; a sheep skull rolled away not too far off.
Zhan Lan took a deep breath, clutching a dagger in her sleeve, and cautiously continued to the end of the alley.
