Ji Ping volunteered to be the driver, and Bao Mi did not object. On the way, Ji Ping gave directions, and she spent the rest of the time talking to her father.
Her father’s speech wasn’t very clear; each word seemed to be a struggle, and his articulation was poor.
But every time she heard her father’s voice, Bao Mi’s heart throbbed.
Each word that burst from his mouth was like a sledgehammer, blow by blow, shattering the gloom that enveloped her, allowing warmth to once again embrace her long-sunless heart.
So, she was still talking animatedly when they arrived at the entrance of the Health Clinic.
As for what she was saying, she herself didn’t really notice, just chattering on about whatever came to mind.
Ji Ping didn’t find it annoying; in fact, he found Bao Mi particularly adorable at this moment.
He had been transferred from another Department and had only known her for about two months. During these two months, he had never seen Bao Mi laugh so happily.
They helped Bao Mi’s father into the wheelchair and pushed him into the Hall together.
Bao Mi, holding her belongings, hurried to the registration office and said to Wang Zhenzhen inside, "Excuse me, can you help me register for Doctor Du?"
Wang Zhenzhen’s outstretched hand paused. She did not take Bao Mi’s Materials. "President Du isn’t here right now," she explained. "He’s gone to the village for a house call. Why don’t you register for Dr. Yu Haiting? He’s a Graduate student and has already..."
But Bao Mi shook her head. "No need. I’m registering for My Dad, and My Dad is Doctor Du’s Patient. Before the May Day holiday, Director Xu took me to see Doctor Du."
From the moment Bao Mi stood at the window, Wang Zhenzhen felt this girl looked familiar. But she hadn’t given it much thought, assuming she might have seen her somewhere nearby before.
Now reminded, she immediately recalled, "I remember now! Director Xu accompanied you here. Your father suffered from stroke paralysis, didn’t he?"
"Yes, yes, yes! I just want to register for Doctor Du."
"It’s really unfortunate; President Du has indeed gone out for consultations. Why don’t you wait here for a while?"
Bao Mi reluctantly nodded.
Ji Ping, pushing Bao Mi’s father from behind, also heard clearly and asked softly, "What should we do now? Just wait here?"
"Let’s wait," she said, heading toward the waiting chairs opposite the registration office.
「At this time, Du Heng and Wu Buwei were rushing to Xicha Village.」
About ten minutes later, the two of them arrived at the Patient’s house.
The phone call had been made by the village doctor, Dr. Li, to Du Heng. Seeing Du Heng arrive, Dr. Li hurriedly greeted him, "President Du, you’re here! The Patient is in this room."
"Tell me in detail what happened," Du Heng said, continuing to walk into the room without stopping.
"The Patient, Li Genmao, 49 years old, fainted suddenly while working in the field at noon."
"How long has it been?"
"From when he fell ill in the field until now, according to his Wife, it’s been almost an hour."
Du Heng stopped in his tracks. "An hour? Why didn’t you think of sending him to the Hospital?"
The village doctor sighed. "It would take about an hour to get to the nearest Municipal First Hospital, and besides, they don’t have the money. They’ve already begun preparing for his funeral. Although his breathing is shallow, I detected a Pulse when I examined him. I urged them to send him to the Hospital, but they wouldn’t listen, so I had no choice but to call you."
Du Heng stomped his foot in anger but, feeling helpless, hurried into the room.
As soon as he entered the room, he saw Li Genmao lying straight and stiff on the bed, with his Wife crying by his side. A circle of people stood around the bedside, either silent or whispering.
Most outrageous of all, Li Genmao was already dressed in a blue silk shroud, apparently just waiting to breathe his last.
The village doctor walked to the front. "Sister-in-law Li, President Du from the Health Clinic is here. Please make some room for President Du to take a look."
Li Genmao’s Wife looked up at Du Heng and, wiping her tears, retreated to a corner of the bed.
Du Heng took a deep breath and walked to the head of the bed to Check Li Genmao’s condition.
Upon examination, Du Heng understood why they hadn’t taken him to the Hospital.
The Patient’s face was deathly pale, and his eyes were tightly closed. His lips, devoid of blood, had turned a faint purple. Du Heng placed a hand near his nostrils; the exhaled breath was faint and weak, with long intervals, as if he could stop breathing at any moment.
"Buwei, hand me the stethoscope."
Wu Buwei, carrying the first aid kit, quickly took out the stethoscope and handed it to Du Heng, watching his every move nervously.
Du Heng unbuttoned Li Genmao’s shroud and, with his hands behind his back, took the stethoscope. He listened to the heartbeat first, then to the sounds between the lungs. His eyebrows furrowed tightly.
After a brief moment of thought, he took off the stethoscope and tossed it back to Wu Buwei. He felt Li Genmao’s neck and then began his pulse diagnosis.
"Buwei, bring me a one-inch short needle and a 4 inch long needle, both disinfected immediately." After speaking, he turned to Li Genmao’s Wife. "Come over and take off his pants completely."
He looked up at the others. "Everyone else, get out. Dr. Li, come over and help me."
Dr. Li began to usher people out and then walked to Du Heng’s side. "President Du, can Genmao be saved?"
"He doesn’t have any major problems, so how can he be beyond saving?"
As soon as Du Heng said this, the village doctor stared blankly, and even Li Genmao’s Wife, who was taking off his pants, froze.
He’s barely breathing in and out; how can that be considered not a problem?
The village doctor asked in a daze, "Then... what is this?"
Du Heng felt both saddened and angered. If they just buried him like this, Li Genmao would truly die with regrets, probably clawing his way out of the coffin in the middle of the night!
"When people work in the fields and become tired and exhausted, they often sit directly on the ground. At noon, with the scorching sun overhead and dampness rising from the earth, sitting directly on the ground allows this dampness to enter the body from below.
"Moreover, while working under the blazing sun, the summer heat descends from above. This heat and the rising dampness meet in the chest and abdomen. With heat above and cold below, if sweat cannot be expelled, then phlegm-damp accumulates and doesn’t disperse, and Phlegm Turbidity clouds the Heart’s orifices."
He sighed. "Wake the Patient up, let him sweat it out, and he can go back to work as usual tomorrow."
As he spoke, Wu Buwei had already disinfected the needle utensils and handed them over.
Du Heng took the short needle first and inserted it into GV-26. He only released his grip when he felt the needle tip reach near the patient’s teeth. He then took the long needle from Wu Buwei’s hand and instructed, "Buwei, come over and apply the midline stimulating method. Don’t stop until he wakes up."
With that, he took the long needle, got onto the bed, and positioned himself below Li Genmao’s body. He said to Dr. Li and Li Genmao’s Wife, "Lift the Patient’s legs. Don’t let go until I say so; make sure you hold them steady."
Li Genmao’s lower body was exposed. The two people lifting his legs were extremely embarrassed, turning their heads away as they lifted Li Genmao’s legs according to Du Heng’s instructions.
Du Heng squatted down, aimed at CV-01, and inserted the needle steadily.
At this point, although the posture was very awkward, the effect was immediate. In just over ten seconds, a rattling sound came from the Patient’s throat, followed by a long exhalation.
Du Heng breathed a sigh of relief. He quickly removed the needle from CV-01. "Alright, you can put his legs down now." As he stepped off the bed, he casually pulled a nearby blanket over Li Genmao’s lower body.
"Buwei, don’t stop! Wait until he opens his eyes before you stop."
The Patient let out a long breath. Wu Buwei paused his ministrations, but Du Heng quickly urged him to continue.
