Under the mask, Du Heng held his breath for a few seconds. Once the smell had faded a bit, he quietly started breathing again.
"How’s your appetite?"
"Pretty good, just like usual."
"Do you feel nauseous?"
"Only when I skip breakfast. It gets better after I eat something or drink some water."
Du Heng had Mrs. Huo switch wrists, and after quietly taking her pulse for over ten seconds, he asked, "Does your stomach ache?"
"It doesn’t ache, but it’s very uncomfortable. Umm... it’s hard to describe, but it’s just really uncomfortable."
"Lie down on that bed over there. I’ll examine you."
Mrs. Huo was very skinny, and since it was hot, she was wearing little clothing. When she lay flat on the treatment bed, her lower ribs protruded noticeably, while her abdomen was sunken.
Du Heng shook his head. She’s too skinny.
After a brief moment of reflection, he pressed a few points on her stomach, liver, and spleen areas. "Does it hurt?"
"No."
"Alright, get up."
The two returned to the Office Desk, where Du Heng applied a little Alcohol to his hands to disinfect them.
Wearing masks and disinfecting hands were measures recently proposed by Lu Zhongjiang.
At the time, Du Heng had thought it was too expensive and was reluctant to agree. After all, the Bureau didn’t provide funds for such consumables; the Health Clinic had to cover all the costs itself.
However, Lu Zhongjiang had insisted, even giving Du Heng a one-hour lecture to win him over. Eventually, Du Heng couldn’t hold out any longer and agreed.
While rubbing his hands, Du Heng asked Mrs. Huo, "Have you been on a diet recently, not eating much?"
"No."
"No? You’re already so skinny, and you say you’re not on a diet? Have you been skipping breakfast and dinner recently?"
"That’s a habit I developed back in University. I’ll eat dinner for one week, then for the next week, I’ll skip it and just have some fruit."
Du Heng let out a sigh. "You have Spleen and Stomach weakness, which is also known as chronic gastritis."
"Can it be cured?"
"It’s not a major Disease. I’ll prescribe some medicine for you to invigorate qi and strengthen the Spleen. Take it on time, and the symptoms will soon be gone. Also, you can eat less for dinner, but you can’t skip it entirely. For example, if you used to eat a bowl of rice, eating just over half a bowl now is fine. This way, you won’t have to worry about gaining weight, and your stomach will have something to digest, preventing stomach problems."
"Alright, I’ll follow your advice."
"And don’t lose any more weight. You’re almost nothing but bones. Dieting is the worst way to lose weight. In milder cases, like yours, you’ll lose weight, but your stomach will be damaged. In severe cases, you’ll develop anorexia, where you won’t want to eat or be able to eat anything. If you eat, you’ll just vomit it back up. You’ll truly suffer then."
Mrs. Huo looked at her figure. "But being fat doesn’t look good."
Du Heng helplessly stared at her. "Do you know the six-word mantra for losing weight?"
"Yes, ’Control your mouth, move your legs.’"
"’Control your mouth’ doesn’t mean not eating. It means not overeating or binge eating, and reducing high-fat, high-calorie foods. The most important part is ’move your legs.’ As long as you get about an hour of exercise every day, enough to break a sweat, you’ll find it hard to gain weight."
"Who has time for exercise? I teach two classes. After my classes, I have to grade Homework and workbooks for nearly a hundred Students. Sometimes I can’t even finish grading before the workday ends. And I also have to find time to mediate disputes among the Students, so my time is even more crunched."
"Those are just excuses. I don’t believe you can’t spare an hour."
Seeing that Mrs. Huo was about to speak again, Du Heng waved his hand. "Alright, just pay attention to what I said. If you don’t listen, I can’t say how your condition might develop later on."
Mrs. Huo seemed resigned. "Fine, prescribe me some medicine."
"How about a Decoction medicine? You can come by during lunch break and after school, and we’ll help you make them. How does that sound?"
"No, Decoction medicine is too bitter."
Seeing Mrs. Huo’s wrinkled nose and frowning face, Du Heng silently sighed to himself. How fussy.
"Then how about a Chinese patent medicine? The Costusroot and Amomum Stomach-smoothening Decoction. It comes in small pellets, and it’s not bitter."
"Okay, that’s fine."
Du Heng thought for a moment. "Let me also prescribe a powder medicine for you. It’s fast-acting, nourishing, and convenient."
"Go ahead."
"Tuckahoe and aucklandia, ground into a powder. You girls usually have those small spoons for drinking, right? Just take one small spoonful of this powder twice a day, mixed with warm water."
"Okay."
Du Heng typed into the system. "Alright, go get your medicine from the Pharmacy. While you’re taking the medicine, be careful with your diet. Avoid Raw and cold food, hard food, chilled food, and spicy or irritating foods."
Mrs. Huo stopped and exclaimed, "Ah, then what am I supposed to eat?"
"Stir-fried dishes, rice, or Noodles are fine, just with less salt and oil."
"Fine."
But just as Mrs. Huo reached the door, she suddenly asked, "Can I still drink milk tea?"
Du Heng immediately held his forehead. "It’s best not to. Milk tea often contains small amounts of preservatives and thickeners. Since you currently have gastritis, these can cause indigestion and disrupt your gastrointestinal function. It won’t help your condition at all. Once your stomach has healed, you can drink it by the bucketful if you want. But for now, please avoid it."
Watching Mrs. Huo finally leave, Du Heng smiled helplessly.
Losing weight has become an obstacle women can’t seem to avoid these days. It’s as if they’re not beautiful unless they’re as thin as a lightning bolt. But how can one put it? Being thin is fine, but being too thin is not. Not only does it affect one’s appearance, but it also leads to health problems. Of course, being too fat is also not good. Hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, diabetes, heart disease, and fatty liver—all sorts of Diseases—thrive in such body types. So, being slightly chubby is really the way to go. It’s not only comfortable to the touch but also healthy.
Du Heng finished up his last bit of work and left the Office.
He wanted to check on the Patient who had experienced a reaction after taking Cephalosporins and Huoxiang Zhengqi Tincture yesterday.
Coincidentally, Yu Haiting was also in the Hospital room. Seeing that the Patient’s condition seemed stable, Du Heng asked, "How’s the Patient’s condition?"
"She’s mostly fine now. She just needs another IV drip this afternoon, and then she can be discharged."
"That’s good."
Yu Haiting gently laughed. "She had taken the two medications five hours apart, and she’d only drunk a small half-bottle of the Huoxiang Zhengqi Tincture. Even with that, she ended up in the state she was in yesterday. If the time between doses had been shorter, or if the Alcohol concentration in the tincture had been higher, her kidneys would definitely have sustained damage."
"Speaking of which, I have something I’d like to discuss with you."
"Tell me, Dean."
"Let’s go to my Office."
The two went to Du Heng’s Office, and Du Heng also called Lu Zhongjiang to join them.
"I want to organize a Training session for the village doctors in Zhonghu Town," Du Heng said, sharing his idea first.
However, Lu Zhongjiang was a bit puzzled. "Then just do it. Hasn’t the Health Clinic always provided Training for village doctors?"
Du Heng shook his head. "The Health Clinic does provide Training for village doctors, but last year, there was only one session. It was for winter flu prevention. It only lasted an hour, and Dr. Zhang Jinlian was the one who conducted it. That Training was purely a formality; it served no real purpose."
"So what do you mean, Dean?"
