This time, An Chunhui was very generous, directly providing Du Heng with the additional staff he needed and also including some good news: Zhang Jinlian had been transferred.
Hearing Wang Zhenzhen’s question, Du Heng smiled brightly. "Three doctors and one secretary."
Upon hearing this, Wang Zhenzhen’s eyes widened in surprise.
She had known about the secretary for a long time, as Du Heng had told her the newcomer would take over the authorized job vacated by Song. But she was also very clear that the Health Clinic only had five authorized jobs for doctors.
There were already four doctors at the clinic. Even if Li retired at the end of the month, the most they could add would be two more people. How could there be three?
"Did you get it wrong? How come there are three doctors?"
"Two Western medicine doctors and one radiologist."
Having a radiologist is excellent.
The Health Clinic had an old-fashioned X-ray Machine and a B-ultrasound machine but no dedicated radiologist. Generally, if they needed to use the equipment, Zhang Jinlian and Li Xiang would have to operate it themselves.
But given the clinic’s previous situation, where it was barely used once a year, having a radiologist or not was a trivial matter.
However, having one was better than not having one at all.
"The numbers don’t add up. We don’t have that many authorized jobs. Could it be they aren’t being assigned to our clinic’s authorized jobs?"
Du Heng looked outside. "Zhang Jinlian was transferred."
"Are you serious?" Wang Zhenzhen stood up in surprise.
In fact, after the last incident, everyone knew Zhang Jinlian was the one who had reported it and understood she would eventually be transferred. But hearing the news for real made them very happy. After all, working with Zhang Jinlian for all these years had left a very bad impression on everyone.
"Where will she be transferred?"
"I don’t know. I didn’t ask."
Wang Zhenzhen was somewhat disappointed. She sat back down. "Well, now the numbers make sense."
She opened the envelope on the table, looked inside, and then spoke, "So much money? Did you spend it all?"
"Yes, I spent it all."
Wang Zhenzhen pursed her lips, locked the money in her drawer, and said, "You’re certainly extravagant."
Du Heng didn’t argue and picked up his bag to leave.
Wang Zhenzhen quickly packed up her things, then grabbed her bag and chased after him.
"Wait for me! Let’s go back together. Gong is off work early today, so he can give you a ride." Wang Zhenzhen caught up with Du Heng in a few steps. "By the way, did you ask about the education level and experience of the doctors who are coming?"
Du Heng paused for a moment. "I didn’t ask, and the leader didn’t mention it either."
"We’re doomed." Upon hearing Du Heng’s words, Wang Zhenzhen sighed. "They must be recent graduates, and probably only have associate degrees."
"No way?" Du Heng started to panic a little.
It wasn’t that he looked down on those with associate degrees, but the thought of new graduates made him anxious. What he needed were people who could start working immediately. If they brought in three new graduates, and with no experienced Western Medicine Doctor available to guide them, what work could they possibly do? Even if they were capable, Du Heng wouldn’t dare let them work independently.
"Why not? Think about it. Over the past few years, who has come to the Health Clinic? Other than you and Wu Buwei, who are undergraduates, has there been anyone else with a bachelor’s degree or higher? Moreover, these people who can come to the clinic before even receiving their diplomas must all have connections. They’ll all be transferred out within two years at most. You’ve seen it happen before, haven’t you?"
Upon reflection, Du Heng realized that did seem to be the case.
Actually, the Health Clinic hired new staff every year, but by the end of the year, these newcomers would all be gone. Just last week, he attended a meeting and saw someone at the Bureau who had joined the Health Clinic only a year after him. In any case, since he started working here, he was the only one who had stayed. Even Wu Buwei, though he hadn’t left yet, would inevitably leave eventually.
As he thought about it, Du Heng suddenly felt An Chunhui might have tricked him. However, he could only blame himself for being too naive. As soon as An Chunhui mentioned it today, he had immediately agreed. Who else could he blame? Now, all he could do was pray that An Chunhui hadn’t duped him too badly.
Du Heng prayed; he even prayed as he went to bed that night.
Perhaps the prayers had worked, because when the new Secretary arrived with the new staff the next day, the situation wasn’t as bad as he had feared.
Of the three doctors, one was a Western Medicine Doctor named Yu Haiting, who had practiced for nearly ten years and was a General Western Medicine practitioner. Most importantly, he actually had a master’s degree, which almost made Du Heng’s jaw drop.
A graduate student working in a Health Clinic for ten years? There must be an interesting story behind that. However, since it involved personal privacy, it wasn’t appropriate for him to ask too many questions.
But having a Western Medicine Doctor with a master’s degree made Du Heng want to squeal with delight.
As for the other two, with Yu Haiting to supervise them, Du Heng was perfectly fine with them. As Wang Zhenzhen had guessed, both held associate degrees. They weren’t recent graduates but had finished their studies two years prior.
However—and this was a big "however"—they were still only assistant physicians, meaning they couldn’t prescribe medicine and were truly at the bottom of the professional food chain.
Still, Du Heng was very satisfied. One Yu Haiting was more than enough.
The new Secretary was Lu Zhongjiang, an older cadre from a department in the Bureau, due to retire in just two more years. This was a perfect opportunity to bring him in to assist and mentor Du Heng, while also serving as a form of alternative compensation for the veteran.
Du Heng cheerfully led the four into his office. "Secretary Lu, it’s truly great that you’re here! I’ve been exhausted these past two weeks, and there’s so much administrative work I don’t know how to do. With you here, I can finally focus on treating patients."
Lu Zhongjiang had been very amiable since he arrived, and he responded to Du Heng’s courteous words with equal politeness. He knew what his role was and what he was capable of.
Though Du Heng is young, he has the leader’s support, so I need to be mindful. My willingness to come here is twofold: first, to get a taste of being an official, and second, to build some connections. After all, being a rank-and-file employee in the Bureau is very different from being a minor leader out here; the people you interact with are quite different.
After they had chatted briefly, Wang Zhenzhen knocked on the door and entered. "Dean, Secretary Lu, everyone is in the conference room. The meeting can begin."
With new arrivals, including a new Secretary, a welcoming meeting was necessary.
There wasn’t much to say about the welcome meeting itself, but Du Heng noticed that Zhang Jinlian was not among the dozen or so people present.
During Secretary Lu’s speech, Du Heng quietly asked Wang Zhenzhen, "Sister Wang, is Dr. Zhang not working today?"
Wang Zhenzhen shifted slightly. "I called her. She said she’s at the Bureau."
I understand. She bypassed me and reported directly to the Bureau. Is it embarrassment or awkwardness? I don’t want to think about her anymore.
However, with Zhang Jinlian’s sudden transfer, the work of promoting health and safety awareness in the schools had to be halted.
After the meeting, Du Heng called Wu Buwei into his office and asked him to take one of the new associate-degree holders to the school with him.
