Only the roots didn't burn as fast as one might think they would. They were actually able to resist the flames for a while before showing signs of being burnt away by the flames. But the time that they held out for was enough that more roots were able to come out of the ground and support the ones that were being burnt. Even if they were being burnt, there were more and more roots that took the place of the ones that were being burnt. Everyone just watched in a daze while Leaf's powers clashed with the flames of the Kijin. But then they came back to their senses when she said, "What are you waiting for? Take down the ogres already!"
