Chapter 7 Calculations

Thinking of Chuyunyi, Mrs. Sun was furious: "Who else could it be if not Chuyunyi, that cheap wretch?" Startled, Sun Xiaoyan ran to the door to peek outside. Thankfully, no one was there. She then spoke in a low voice, "Mom, keep it down. Aren’t you afraid of people in the courtyard overhearing? What if Yunyi finds out and it ruins Third Brother’s plans?" Upon hearing this, Mrs. Sun realized that she had been blinded by anger and lowered her voice: "I feel that little wench Chuyunyi is up to something." Sun Xiaoyan sat down beside her mother. "What do you mean?" Her mother glanced towards the door. "The other day, those people helped, so we weren’t allowed to get involved with her grandfather’s funeral arrangements. That was somewhat understandable. But today, she announced in front of so many neighbors that she needed to rest and didn’t even let me through the front door. I just feel something isn’t right." Sun Xiaoyan furrowed her brow, thinking for a moment. "Maybe she was just in a bad mood and wanted to be alone, undisturbed." Mrs. Sun slapped her pant leg. "Does she really think it’s like before, when she had someone backing her? How dare she treat me this way! She’ll suffer for it later." Sun Xiaoyan, fearing her mother would lose her temper and cause more trouble, quickly advised, "Mom, please calm down. Don’t forget, my job isn’t officially confirmed yet. In everyone else’s eyes, I’m just a substitute." Mrs. Sun sighed. "I know. Speaking of which, where’s your Third Brother?" Sun Xiaoyan, relieved that her mother had listened, said, "I don’t know. He’s off shift today, so he’s probably out with those fair-weather friends of his." Something occurred to her, and she moved closer to her mother. "Mom, I heard that the people who helped Yunyi with Old Master Chu’s funeral arrangements are quite influential. If they find out about Yunyi’s assignment to the countryside, do you think they might cause trouble for us?" After hearing her daughter, Mrs. Sun said, "You’re right. Later, you and your Third Brother should go over to her place and try to pry some information out of that little wretch." Sun Xiaoyan didn’t actually want to go. A funeral had just been held in that courtyard, and she found it ominous. So, she answered perfunctorily, "Got it." Realizing something else, she continued, "I never imagined Mr. Chu would pass away at such a critical juncture. Our previous plans are probably ruined." Mrs. Sun said indifferently, "Didn’t you just say that the people who were at the Chu family’s home these past few days are very influential? As long as Chuyunyi asks, returning to the city is just a matter of a few words for her. However, we need to plan this carefully. We can’t let her drag our family into it." Sun Xiaoyan smiled. "With Third Brother handling it, what couldn’t be resolved? Given Chuyunyi’s infatuation with Third Brother, she’ll do whatever he says." But at this, Mrs. Sun was not pleased. "That darn kid, your Third Brother! What has he been up to lately? All he does is run around outside. He doesn’t even use this opportunity to secure her quickly." Previously, Old Master Chu didn’t think highly of Sun Ruiming and was strongly against his granddaughter being with him. That’s why the Sun Family had devised an underhanded scheme, planning to take an unorthodox approach. But fortunes can change overnight. Unexpectedly, Old Master Chu had an accident and passed away, just like that. Due to Old Master Chu’s prestige in the area, Sun Ruiming and Chuyunyi’s interactions had mostly been kept secret, so not many people knew about them. Ever since Old Master Chu passed away, however, Chuyunyi’s attitude towards the Sun Family had changed, and Mrs. Sun had been feeling uneasy. She feared complications at this critical moment. She plotted internally: once her third son, Sun Ruiming, returned, he had to secure Chuyunyi quickly. Once Chuyunyi became a Sun Family member, her possessions would naturally belong to the Sun Family.
